Russia targeted natural gas plants operated by Naftogaz, Ukraine’s state-owned gas company. Ukrainian Air Force officials reported that Russia conducted a large-scale aerial assault on Ukraine on Thursday night, employing 381 drones and 35 missiles. These attacks were characterized as an attempt to cripple Ukraine’s power supply infrastructure before winter.

Serhiy Koretskyi, the chief executive of Naftogaz, stated in a declaration that the attacks constituted deliberate acts of terrorism against civilian infrastructure. These facilities provide essential gas extraction and processing services crucial for the normal functioning of citizens’ lives.

Thousands of homes across several Ukrainian cities have experienced disruptions in their power and gas supplies due to the attacks. Ukraine has made the decision to import substantial volumes of gas in an effort to manage the situation.

According to Koretskyi, Russia launched 35 missiles (many of which were ballistic) and deployed 60 drones to strike Naftogaz’s gas extraction and processing facilities in the Kharkiv region in the northeast and the Poltava region in the center. He indicated that some facilities suffered severe damage during the attacks. In a statement, the Russian Defense Ministry announced that its forces had conducted extensive attacks on the Ukrainian military-industrial complex and its supporting gas and energy infrastructure using drones and guided weapons.

According to Ukrainian officials, a child aged eight and two women were injured in the Russian air strikes in Poltava. They reported that over half of the windows of the historical St. Nicholas Church in the city were shattered in one of the attacks.

Meanwhile, Andriy Kovalenko, the head of the Center for Counteracting Disinformation in Ukraine’s National Security and Defense Council, reported on Friday that Ukraine had launched retaliatory strikes against Russia using domestically produced long-range drones, targeting the Orsk oil refinery, located approximately 1,400 kilometers (900 miles) from the Ukrainian border.

Authorities revealed that the Ukrainian drone strikes caused a temporary disruption in operations at the Azot chemical plant, one of Russia’s largest chemical plants, located in Berezniki, 1,500 kilometers (930 miles) from Moscow. The Russian Foreign Ministry stated that the country’s air defense systems shot down at least 20 Ukrainian drone aircraft on Thursday night. The ministry indicated that most of these aircraft were targeted while flying over the Black Sea.

Heavy rainfall has brought life to a standstill in various districts of Bihar. The Meteorological Department had previously issued an alert, warning of continuous rain across the state, including the capital, Patna. The downpour has been accompanied by strong winds and thunderstorms, leading to waterlogging in both rural and urban areas.

The relentless rain has significantly impacted road, rail, and air services. Schools and colleges have been closed in Patna and several other districts. Schools in Chhapra, Siwan, Motihari, and Gopalganj are also shut. Numerous low-lying areas in Patna are inundated. The heavy rainfall is directly affecting crops in other districts.

Power supply has been interrupted in both rural and urban areas due to the strong winds and rainfall. A flight from Delhi to Patna was diverted to Varanasi. According to the latest reports, Gopalganj district recorded the highest rainfall at 49.5 millimeters, followed by Gaya with 28 millimeters, and Aurangabad with 27.6 millimeters.

The Meteorological Department has issued a warning, predicting that winds could reach speeds of 30 to 40 kilometers per hour in most parts of the state. Several districts are under a red alert, including Vaishali, Darbhanga, and Madhubani. These districts are expected to receive more than 200 millimeters of rainfall, with a risk of lightning strikes.

Senior AAP leader and Delhi State President Saurabh Bharadwaj has strongly criticized the BJP-led Delhi government, alleging it is failing to deliver on its promises. Bharadwaj accused the BJP of inflicting suffering on Delhi residents through measures like a 10.5% Power Purchase Adjustment Charges (PPAC) hike, failure to eliminate pension charges in electricity bills, and prolonged power outages, sometimes lasting up to 14 hours. Bharadwaj stated that within just four months of assuming power, the BJP has allegedly implemented policies that negatively impact various segments of society, including fee increases in private schools, demolitions of jhuggi settlements, and increased electricity bills. He cited a video from July 2024 where BJP leaders had vehemently opposed an 8% PPAC increase, calling it evidence of corruption. Bharadwaj questioned the BJP’s current stance, pointing out the 10.5% hike under their governance and challenged them to reconcile their previous criticism with their current actions. He also demanded the removal of pension charges, citing Virendra Sachdeva’s previous statements that these charges were unjustified. Bharadwaj highlighted the severity of the situation, mentioning widespread power cuts, including a 14-hour blackout in Chhatarpur, and the need for residents in areas like Greater Kailash to install inverters. He concluded by accusing the BJP of making electricity unaffordable, allowing prolonged power cuts, and continuing to collect unjust pension charges, demanding answers from the ruling party.
