Chennai erupted as Tilak Varma unleashed havoc on Zimbabwe’s bowlers, crafting an unbeaten 44 from 16 deliveries studded with four maximums and three boundaries. This came in the T20 World Cup clash where India posted 256, a score largely fueled by the 21-year-old’s audacious strokeplay from the lower order.

Dropped to number six amid scrutiny over his conservative approach in prior games, Varma proved his mettle. His innings flipped the narrative, showcasing the destructive potential that made him a white-ball prospect.

Reflecting on the game, Varma credited the top order: ‘A great start from the openers gives confidence to numbers 3, 4, and 5. Sanju’s explosive beginning allowed us to maintain aggression despite early wickets in the powerplay. We aimed to instill fear in their bowlers, ready to hit every ball.’

The team huddled pre-match for strategy. ‘We focused on positivity, revisiting last year’s T20 footage and videos for inspiration. It was a collective call to unleash our full potential,’ he explained.

Adapting seamlessly to the role, Varma noted, ‘Team comes first. I’ve filled similar slots for MI and India before. Post-wicket, I target immediate boundaries and sixes.’

With eyes on future fixtures, he affirmed, ‘This is our consistent style from the past year. We’ll stick to it and push scores beyond 250 in coming games.’

India’s batting depth looks formidable now, with Varma emerging as a key aggressor in high-stakes T20 action.

Just days before the start of the Asia Cup 2025, a hard-hitting Pakistani batsman announced his retirement from international cricket. Asif Ali, a middle-order batsman who was part of the Pakistani team in the 2022 Asia Cup, made the decision. After being out of the Pakistani team for the past two years, Ali cited dwindling hopes of a comeback as the reason for his retirement. The batsman made his debut in 2018 and played a total of 79 matches for Pakistan in both ODI and T20 formats.

Ali, 33, announced his retirement from international cricket on Monday, September 1st, via a post on his social media account. In his statement, Ali wrote, “Today, I announce my retirement from international cricket. Wearing the Pakistan jersey has been the greatest honor of my life, and serving my country on the cricket field has been the most proud moment for me.” Ali also thanked his teammates, coaching staff, and fans.

Ali debuted for Pakistan in T20 cricket in 2018, followed by his ODI debut the same year. Ali was recognized as a power hitter, and he consistently received opportunities in the Pakistani team with this expectation. He was given chances in the middle order and as a finisher, especially in T20 cricket, but he was never able to fulfill his role properly. Except for a few exceptional innings, he disappointed the team on most occasions.

Ali was not included in the Asia Cup this time. However, he was part of the Pakistani team in the T20 Asia Cup in 2022, played in the UAE. Before that tournament, he claimed to hit 150 sixes during practice every day. Expectations were high for him in the tournament, but apart from a match-winning performance against Afghanistan, he didn’t do much. In two matches against India, he scored 25 runs in 15 balls. Furthermore, in the T20 World Cup 2022, he was dismissed for just 2 runs against Team India.

Having debuted for the Pakistani team in 2018, Asif Ali had been out of the team for the last 2 years. He played his last T20 match in October 2023 and his last ODI match in April 2022. Overall, Asif scored 577 runs in 58 T20 matches for Pakistan with an average of 15 and a strike rate of 133. In 21 ODIs, he could only score 382 runs with an average of 25.

Salman Nizar of the Calicut Globals stars created a sensation in the Kerala Cricket League (KCL) by smashing 11 sixes in just 12 balls across two overs. The explosive display of batting took place during a match between Trivandrum Royals and Calicut Globals on August 30th in Thiruvananthapuram. The Globals were struggling, having only scored 115 runs for 6 wickets by the 18th over. However, the final two overs saw a stunning turnaround, with the team adding 71 runs to their total, ultimately finishing at 186 for 6. Nizar’s extraordinary performance has drawn comparisons to India’s star batsman Sanju Samson, who has also been making headlines with his impressive batting ahead of the Asia Cup 2025.

The countdown to the Asia Cup 2025 has begun. The tournament will commence on September 9th, and teams are intensely preparing. Eight teams will participate, including Bangladesh. This year’s Asia Cup will be in the T20 format, prompting Bangladesh to bring in power-hitting coach Julian Wood some time ago. He has joined the team and is training players with special equipment.

Bangladesh’s unique practice involves using a ProVelocity bat to enhance the cricketers’ power-hitting abilities. The Bangladesh Cricket Board (BCB) recently appointed Julian Wood, an English power-hitting coach, to improve their cricketers’ power-hitting skills. He is now training cricketers in Bangladesh with new and modern equipment. A photo of this training has gone viral on social media, showing Julian Wood coaching Bangladeshi player Litton Das with a heavy rod.

The ProVelocity bat is typically used by baseball and softball players for practice. It helps improve hand-eye coordination. The ProVelocity bat is around 32 inches long and weighs around 1190 grams. A Bangladesh batsman mentioned that using the ProVelocity bat is a new concept and they are enjoying the sessions with Wood. In a recent video shared by BCB, Wood instructed Bangladesh’s T20 captain, Litton Das, to play shadow shots ranging from drives to square cuts and pulls with the ProVelocity bat.

Julian Wood has previously worked with England’s batsmen on power-hitting batting. He taught England’s players hitting techniques, which significantly improved their performance. Regarding the Asia Cup 2025, Bangladesh is scheduled to play their first match on September 11th against Hong Kong. They are in a group with Sri Lanka and Afghanistan.
