Penang Island buzzed with excitement as AIPA’s pickleball contingent stormed to victory at the WPC Series, amassing 4 golds, 3 silvers, and 2 bronzes on April 21. This medal bonanza not only boosts India’s profile in pickleball but also reflects the sport’s surging popularity back home.

Mayur Patil and Vanshika Kapadia’s gold in men’s doubles 19+ open was a masterclass in strategy, their anticipation and power play overwhelming opponents. Kuldeep Mahajan and Nicholas Malegianias fought valiantly for bronze in the same category.

Switching to singles, Vanshika Kapadia dominated men’s 19+ open for gold, with Kuldeep Mahajan securing bronze, extending his strong form.

Mixed doubles 19+ open delivered more glory: Vrishali Thakare and Vanshika Kapadia’s gold came from flawless execution, while Aaliya Ibrahim and Willy Chung’s silver showcased grit in nail-biting encounters.

Aaliya Ibrahim’s versatility shone in women’s doubles 19+ advanced plus with Ariana Murlidharan for silver, and she clinched gold in women’s singles 19+ advanced plus, a standout personal triumph.

‘This is a testament to our players’ hard work and pickleball’s boom in India,’ said AIPA President Arvind Prabhu. ‘Penang’s results affirm our dedication to developing talent capable of global competition.’

Building on recent successes, AIPA had triumphed at the WPC Asia Open in Bangkok last month, grabbing 2 golds and a silver. Patil and Kapadia won men’s doubles, and Ibrahim paired with Agnimithra Bhavatos Bhattacharya for women’s doubles gold.

With such performances, India is cementing its place in pickleball’s elite circle, promising more international accolades and grassroots growth.

A major boost for pickleball enthusiasts in India: the Indian Open 2026 is now a sanctioned PWR 1000 event following a strategic alliance between the Indian Pickleball Association (IPA) and Global Sports. Scheduled from April 1 to 5, 2026, at Hyderabad’s Crosscourts, the fourth edition will feature 1,500+ competitors in 56 diverse categories.

Building on the success of previous years—where 4,000 players from 19 nations participated—this tournament steps up under official IPA oversight. It aligns private enterprise with national sports infrastructure, recognized by the government, to legitimize and expand the sport.

IPA President Suryaveer Singh Bhullar emphasized the partnership’s role in providing elite opportunities, igniting pickleball’s evolution nationwide. Global Sports, known for blockbuster tournaments like the Grand Slam and Monsoon Championship with huge crowds and prizes, brings proven expertise.

For players, PWR 1000 status means official rankings, fair competition, and professional pathways. Analysts foresee rapid rises in skill levels and fan engagement, positioning India as a pickleball powerhouse and opening doors to global spectacles.
