A powerful earthquake, registering a magnitude of 6.9, struck the central Philippines late Tuesday, leading to the loss of at least 22 lives and numerous injuries. The seismic event caused significant damage to buildings and prompted residents to evacuate their homes, according to official reports. The epicenter of the quake was located approximately 17 kilometers northeast of Bogo, a coastal city with a population close to 90,000. The intense shaking compromised concrete structures, including homes and a fire station, caused substantial cracking in asphalt roads, and disrupted the power supply. Firefighter Rey Cañete reported that he and several colleagues sustained injuries after the barracks they were in began to shake violently. A concrete wall at their fire station collapsed, and they provided first aid to injured civilians, including an elderly man who suffered head injuries and was transported to a hospital. Several businesses and shops also sustained visible damage, along with deep cracks that appeared on roads. An older Roman Catholic church in Daanbantayan town, near Bogo, was also affected. Cebu Governor Pamela Baricuatro indicated that an undisclosed number of houses and a hospital in Bogo and surrounding areas were damaged, and that emergency medical teams were mobilized to assist residents who were trapped and injured. The extent of the damage and injuries was expected to be fully assessed during the daytime. A tsunami warning was initially issued by the Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology, advising residents in Cebu and neighboring provinces to avoid coastal areas. However, this warning was later lifted after no unusual wave activity was detected.

Following youth movements in Nepal and public pressure in Indonesia, the Philippines, a Southeast Asian nation and neighbor to China, faces a major political crisis. Millions are set to take to the streets in Manila on Sunday, September 21st, in what is being called the Trillion Peso March. The demonstration is against alleged corruption involving billions of dollars in government funds and the extravagant lifestyles of the leaders’ children. The anger stems not only from corruption but also from the resulting human tragedy. Recent severe floods have devastated the country, with streets turning into rivers, people stranded, vehicles swept away, and millions struggling to survive. The spread of diseases like leptospirosis, which is transmitted through contaminated water and rats, causing severe liver damage, has further fueled public discontent. People are questioning why their tax money isn’t being used to prevent floods and improve infrastructure. The public is enraged as the government claimed to have spent billions on flood control projects, yet the results were only visible on paper.

A statement made by Philippine President Ferdinand Marcos Jr. during his visit to India has ignited a strong reaction from China. In response to a question in New Delhi, President…

A statement made by Philippine President Ferdinand Marcos Jr. during his visit to India has ignited a strong reaction from China. In response to a question in New Delhi, President Marcos indicated that the Philippines would stand with Taiwan in the event of a conflict, which has angered China. China has accused the Philippines of playing with fire.

The Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesperson stated that Taiwan is an internal matter, and Manila’s remarks are seen as an attempt to worsen the situation, which will have consequences.

During an interview in New Delhi, Marcos stated that if the United States and China engage in a war over Taiwan, the Philippines would be compelled to join the conflict. Marcos emphasized that protecting their physical and geographical territories is a duty.

Marcos also accused China of pursuing an expansionist policy, including the encirclement of Taiwan and the continuous increase of its vessels in the South China Sea, calling these actions provocative.

The Philippines had not previously recognized Taiwan as a sovereign nation, but this stance has now shifted, escalating tensions with China. The Chinese Foreign Ministry released a statement on Friday, warning the Philippines to be cautious, as it is playing with fire.

The Chinese Foreign Ministry also accused the Philippines of going back on its word, questioning why Manila would make provocative statements about Taiwan when it does not recognize it as a separate nation.

While many nations, including the United States and the Philippines, do not recognize Taiwan as a separate country, the United States does supply weapons to Taiwan’s acting government.

China has condemned Marcos’s statement as a violation of international laws, claiming it would harm regional peace, stability, and the fundamental interests of the people.

Both China and the Philippines have overlapping claims in the South China Sea, including the Scarborough Shoal and other territories. China seized the Scarborough Shoal in 2012. In 2016, an international tribunal ruled against China’s claims regarding the shoal, but China does not accept this ruling.

The international court also states that China has seized several disputed areas in the South China Sea that it has no right to. In 2024, tensions between the Philippines and China increased when Beijing deployed its naval fleet in the South China Sea.

In the face of escalating tensions in the South China Sea, India and the Philippines have initiated a new strategic partnership. Philippine President Ferdinand Marcos Jr. is on an official…

In the face of escalating tensions in the South China Sea, India and the Philippines have initiated a new strategic partnership. Philippine President Ferdinand Marcos Jr. is on an official visit to India at the invitation of Prime Minister Narendra Modi, from August 4th to 8th. This collaboration extends beyond mere diplomatic ties, encompassing a comprehensive roadmap for joint endeavors in the years ahead. The establishment of this strategic partnership signifies a significant milestone, coinciding with the 75th anniversary of diplomatic relations between the two nations. The focus now shifts from strengthening bilateral relations to jointly preparing for the future.

The partnership sends a clear message regarding China’s growing influence in the South China Sea. While not explicitly naming China, both nations have affirmed the legally binding nature of the 2016 international arbitration ruling. Concerns were raised regarding aggressive and coercive behavior, emphasizing the importance of maritime laws, freedom of navigation, and regional stability.

India and the Philippines will strengthen their cooperation in defense and security matters. Regular meetings of the Joint Defense Cooperation Committee (JDCC) and the Joint Defense Industry Committee (JDILC) will take place. This will facilitate collaboration in military training, defense technology, and activities across all three armed forces. Joint efforts will also be undertaken to enhance maritime security, hydrography, cybersecurity, counter-terrorism, and combatting maritime piracy.

Bilateral trade reached $3.3 billion in 2024-25. The aim is to further ease trade via a Preferential Trade Agreement (PTA). There will be extensive collaboration in sectors such as pharmaceuticals, automobiles, electric vehicles, agriculture, startups, biotechnology, tourism, and digital technology. India and the Philippines will also work together in pharmaceutical research, skill development, and traditional medicine.

There will be increased exchanges of experts in Ayurveda, yoga, and healthcare. Opportunities for education and research will be provided to young people through ITEC and ICCR scholarships. Both nations will collaborate on research within the Science and Technology Program for 2025-28. Partnerships will include space science, peaceful nuclear energy, AI, fintech, and cyber forensics. Direct flights between Delhi and Manila will soon commence. Efforts will also focus on connecting ports, maritime traffic, and digital connectivity. Indians will be exempt from visa requirements for travel to the Philippines, and Philippine citizens will receive e-tourist visas to India free of charge. The countries will also collaborate on platforms such as the UN Security Council reform, the International Solar Alliance, the Global Biofuels Alliance, and the Global South. A shared vision will be adopted on environmental protection, disaster management, and sustainable development.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi underscored the strong bond between India and the Philippines, characterizing the two nations as “friends by choice and partners by destiny.” Addressing a joint press meeting,…

Prime Minister Narendra Modi underscored the strong bond between India and the Philippines, characterizing the two nations as “friends by choice and partners by destiny.” Addressing a joint press meeting, PM Modi highlighted the shared values uniting the two countries from the Indian Ocean to the Pacific, emphasizing that their friendship is not just rooted in the past but also promises a shared future. Celebrating the 75th anniversary of diplomatic relations, PM Modi noted the ancient cultural connections, citing the Philippines’ version of the Ramayana, the Maharadia Lawana, as evidence of centuries-old cultural ties. India and the Philippines have reaffirmed their commitment to strengthening their mutual ties further. PM Modi described the Philippines as a key partner in India’s ‘Act East Policy’ and ‘MAHASAGAR’ vision, emphasizing a commitment to peace, security, prosperity, and a rule-based order in the Indo-Pacific Region, supporting freedom of navigation under international laws. The Prime Minister also expressed India’s full cooperation for the Philippines’ upcoming chairmanship of ASEAN. Following delegation-level talks with Philippine President Ferdinand Romualdez Marcos Jr., PM Modi announced the elevation of the relationship to a strategic partnership, with a detailed action plan to implement it. This plan aims to enhance bilateral trade, which has already surpassed USD 3 billion, and prioritize the completion of the India-ASEAN Free Trade Agreement review, alongside working towards a Bilateral Preferential Trade Agreement. Cooperation is set to be strengthened across sectors, including agriculture, technology, and defense. The International Rice Research Institute’s regional center in Varanasi is developing ultra-low glycemic index rice, a project blending taste and health. Development partnerships are also being enhanced, with plans to increase the number of Quick Impact Projects in the Philippines, and cooperation in the development of sovereign data cloud infrastructure is planned. Expanding collaboration into space, an agreement was signed during President Ferdinand Romualdez Marcos Jr.’s visit. Defense ties are strengthening, with a focus on maritime cooperation, demonstrated by the participation of Indian Navy ships in a naval exercise in the Philippines for the first time, including a hydrography ship. Earlier in the day, a grand welcome ceremony was held at Rashtrapati Bhavan for President Marcos Jr., hosted by President Droupadi Murmu and Prime Minister Modi, with a Guard of Honour as part of the welcome ceremony. President Marcos Jr. noted that the Indo-Pacific is the correct evolution of Asia Pacific, reaffirming the alliance between India and the Philippines. President Marcos Jr.’s visit is his first to India since assuming office in 2022, marking a significant milestone, as his visit aligns with the celebration of the 75th anniversary of diplomatic ties between the two nations.
