As geopolitical tensions simmer in West Asia, India’s central government is ramping up biogas infrastructure at breakneck speed. Wednesday’s announcement from the Petroleum Ministry confirms approval for 41 cylinder filling and storage plants for biogas, 14 of which now hold active licenses.

PESO, the key regulatory body, sifted through 467 applications for CNG and CBG stations in under a month—from March 25 to April 21—prioritizing urgent cases. The tally: 157 full licenses granted, 38 preliminary nods for building new outlets. This surge in approvals is part of a broader strategy to diversify and secure gas supplies.

Amid the crisis, PESO rolled out pragmatic safety tweaks. SKO storage limits were eased to 2,500 liters routinely and 5,000 liters once-off for PDS continuity. Ammonium nitrate exports halted entirely on March 18. LNG cryogenic cylinder filling got the go-ahead, adding supply agility.

Swift infrastructure growth is prioritized: CNG-related applications must clear in 10 days per March 20 orders. Porbandar Jetty’s LPG handling permission from March 14 cuts delivery times. For openness, PESO published lists of certified container makers for kerosene and diesel on its site from April 1. Compressor approvals for CNG/CBG stations enjoy a six-month waiver, turbocharging deployments.

DPIIT complements these with pro-industry measures, focusing on supply chain stability and manufacturing continuity. Together, these steps fortify India’s fuel ecosystem, minimizing West Asia fallout and paving the way for sustainable energy independence.
