  • Mehbooba Mufti: “Give 50 lakh, jobs to kin of people killed in police investigation”: PDP chief Mehbooba Mufti

Poonch: Mehbooba Mufti, the chief of the People’s Democratic Party (PDP) has requested Lieutenant Governor Manoj Sinha and Defence Minister Rajnath Singh to give compensation of 50 Lakh rupees to the people allegedly killed in the police investigation following a terror attack in Poonch last week.

Addressing a press conference, Mufti said “The people of Rajouri have supported the country’s army in all the wars that have taken place since 1947. People were picked up from their homes, killed, and beaten. This has been done with so loyal people, who guard the borders along with the army. I sincerely request that LG should tell the Defence Minister that a compensation of Rs 50 lakh should be given to the people harassed. Jobs and plots should be given on the roadside and Rs 5 lakh should be given to the injured people.”

She further said that an FIR was registered on the unknown person when everything was visible in the alleged video.”After that, the Army Chief and Defence Minister came here, then what happened? Then FIR was lodged in the name of the unknown when everything was visible in that video. If you do not catch the culprit, then in a way you are also committing crime. When I tried to come and meet their families, I was put under house arrest. People from the BJP and the National Conference were allowed. I was stopped again yesterday. Don’t know what they are trying to hide,” she added.

Further coming down heavily on the Defence Minister, she asserted that what is the benefit of his visit if people are still threatened.

“They brought so many people to stop us. We are not the people of China or Pakistan. We are among the people of our country, so why were we stopped?” Mehbooba Mufti said.Earlier, Mehbooba Mufti was stopped by the police on DKG road in Poonch (Jammu and Kashmir) due to security concerns. She was en route to meet the families of victims near the location of an anti-terrorist operation in the Poonch district in Jammu and Kashmir.Following the incident, Mehbooba and her supporters staged a protest, expressing dissatisfaction with the situation.

“BJP president Ravinder Raina can come here; National Conference leaders can come but they tell us that there is some threat here. I think the biggest threat here is these people. They don’t want us to meet those families. They are trying to hide something then,” Mufti said on Saturday.

Earlier on December 27, Defence Minister Rajnath Singh met the families of three civilians who were killed near the site of an anti-terrorist operation in Poonch district of Jammu and Kashmir.

Rajnath Singh was accompanied by Jammu and Kashmir Lieutenant Governor Manoj Singh.

  • ‘People’s journalist’ Isudan Gadhvi fails to strike chord with the masses

    By PTI

KHAMBHALIA: Isudan Gadhvi bagged the maximum votes during an opinion poll by his party to emerge as Aam Aadmi Party’s chief ministerial face in Gujarat Assembly polls, but failed to garner enough votes to make his and his party’s debut in Gujarat politics eventful.

Gadhvi, who contested from Khambhalia seat, lost to BJP’s Ayar Mulubhai Hardasbhai Bera, who polled 10 per cent more votes than the AAP leader.

AAP was leading in just five of the 182 assembly seats in the state, where polling was held in two phases on December 1 and 5.

Gadhvi, the 40-year-old journalist-turned-politician, entered politics just a year back, in June 2021, and joined AAP, answering its call for change after 27 years of uninterrupted BJP rule in the state.

He was appointed as the party’s national joint general secretary and was declared as AAP’s CM candidate by party chief Arvind Kejriwal in November this year.

AAP had asked people to submit their opinion to the party through social media, SMS, and emails on who should be the party’s CM candidate. More than 70 per cent respondents expressed their opinion in favour of Gadhvi.

During the month-long whirlwind election campaign, Gadhvi was the party’s star campaigner along with Kejriwal and Punjab Chief Minister Bhagwant Singh Mann.

During the campaign, Gadhvi spoke of his being the son of a farmer and also of AAP’s promise of “bijli, pani and daam” (power, water and remunerative prices for produce) to win the support of the agrarian community.

But this failed to strike a chord with the voters, who were unwilling to trust someone sans experience in politics or administration.

The AAP failed to woo enough support to win the elections but hogged Congress’ vote share in several places, leading to the victory of BJP candidates in close contest seats.

The Kejriwal-led party now has an opportunity to replicate the Punjab experiment, where it came to power in the second attempt after a failed first attempt.

For Gadhvi, remaining relevant and emerging as a people’s leader would be the real challenge, a political observer said.

The challenge before Gadhvi would be to build a solid cadre base of the party at the booth and block level to take on the well-oiled election machinery of the BJP and the Congress in the state.

His previous avatar as a famous television anchor and journalist helped him easily connect with the masses during the poll campaign.

A native of Pipaliya village of Devbhumi Dwarka district, Gadhvi was born into a family of farmers. He belongs to the Other Backward Class (OBC) community, which accounts for 48 per cent of the state’s population.

Gadhvi started his career as a journalist with a local news channel around 17 years ago after acquiring a degree in journalism from the Gujarat Vidyapith, a deemed university in Ahmedabad founded by Mahatma Gandhi in 1920.

He started his career as a journalist in Doordarshan before shifting to a channel in Porbandar. During this tenure, he did some investigative stories against illegal deforestation, which brought him to the limelight.

In 2015, he took up the job of channel head of another Gujarati news channel ‘VTV Gujarati’ in Ahmedabad. He was also the anchor of a show called ‘Maha-Manthan’, which became extremely popular among rural masses as Gadhvi used to take up issues related to agriculture and farmers prominently.

He was also known for his aggressive anchoring style, and his on-screen personality helped him gain immense popularity among people. His criticising the administrative system and the government while debating key issues and seeking accountability earned him praise among people.

  • PAGD, other parties meet in Jammu; to form committee on non-locals as J&K voters

    By PTI

JAMMU: A meeting convened by the People’s Alliance for Gupkar Declaration (PAGD) here on Saturday decided to set up a committee to chalk out the future strategy on the issue of inclusion of “non-locals” in the electoral rolls of Jammu and Kashmir.

The meeting was attended by all the five constituents of the PAGD – NC, PDP, CPI(M), CPI and Awami National Conference – besides the Congress and several Jammu-based parties, including Dogra Swabhiman Sangathan Party (DSSP) and Dogra Sadar Sabha-led by former minister Gulchain Singh Charak.

PAGD chairperson and National Conference president Farooq Abdullah announced the decision on the formation of the committee after chairing the over three-hour meeting at his residence here.

“The main purpose was to discuss the issue of inclusion of non-locals in the voting list of Jammu and Kashmir. Charak Sahab put forward a suggestion that a committee should be formed,” the former chief minister told reporters.

He said the meeting later unanimously decided to form the committee which will chalk out a future strategy on the issue.

Parties in J-K have opposed any inclusion of non-locals in the revised electoral rolls in Jammu and Kashmir.

The BJP has, however, slammed the NC, PDP and others for raking up the issue of “inclusion of non-local voters” and accused them of spreading propaganda to disturb the peace.

It has said there was no issue of “locals or non-locals” as the Constitution gives the right to every citizen to vote after attaining the age of 18.

  • Indian graziers stopped by Chinese troops near LAC in Demchok in eastern Ladakh

    By PTI

NEW DELHI: Indian graziers were stopped by Chinese troops from moving ahead near the Line of Actual Control (LAC) in the Demchok region of eastern Ladakh over a week ago, people familiar with the development said on Monday.

There was no face-off or confrontation between the Indian and Chinese forces in view of the incident as such objections by both sides happen routinely, they said.

The people said some Indian graziers were on the Indian side of the LAC in the region but the Chinese People’s Liberation Army (PLA) objected to their presence claiming the area to be on their side.

The incident is understood to have taken place on August 21.

“Such incidents happen in those areas because of differing perceptions about the LAC by both sides,” said one of the people cited above, adding the incident figured in subsequent talks between area commanders of the two armies.

The incident took place amid the prolonged military standoff between the two sides at a number of friction points in eastern Ladakh.

India has been consistently maintaining that peace and tranquillity along the LAC is key for the overall development of Sino-India bilateral ties.

The Indian and Chinese militaries have held 16 rounds of talks to resolve the eastern Ladakh border standoff that erupted on May 5, 2020, following a violent clash in the Pangong lake areas.

Both sides gradually enhanced their deployment by rushing in tens of thousands of soldiers as well as heavy weaponry.

As a result of a series of military and diplomatic talks, the two sides completed the disengagement process last year on the north and south banks of the Pangong lake and in the Gogra area.

Meanwhile, Congress leader Mallikarjun Kharge, referring to a report on the incident, took to Twitter to claim that the government is in “complete denial while China challenges our territorial sovereignty.”

  • ‘Final decision on contesting all 90 seats in J-K at time of polls’: NC president Farooq Abdullah

    By PTI

SRINAGAR: National Conference president Farooq Abdullah on Thursday said a final decision on contesting all 90 assembly seats in Jammu and Kashmir will be taken at the time of polls, and that the shutters have not been pulled down on the five-party PAGD alliance.

His remarks come a day after the provincial committee of the National Conference resolved to contest all 90 seats and not in alliance with other members of the People’s Alliance for Gupkar Declaration (PAGD), the amalgam formed for the restoration of special status of Jammu and Kashmir within the Indian Constitution.

“The PAGD will never shut its doors,” Abdullah told reporters here.

Asked about the party’s provincial committee resolution that the NC should prepare and fight all 90 assembly seats when the elections take place, he said the NC was a democratic party, but the final decision will be taken at the time of the polls.

“It (the resolution) is okay. The NC is a democratic party, a democratic party and can pass resolutions, but the final decision will be taken when the time for election comes,” he said.

At the provincial committee meeting, chaired by NC vice president Omar Abdullah, at the party headquarters Nawa-e-Subha here on Wednesday, the participants present in the meeting expressed dismay over the recent statements, audio jingles and speeches made by some of the constituents of the PAGD targeting the NC, the party statement had said.

“They felt that it does not contribute to the overall unity of the amalgam. They denounced the unfair treatment meted out to JKNC in PAGD. The participants demanded immediate course correction from PAGD constituents. The provincial committee members unanimously resolved that JKNC should prepare and fight all 90 assembly seats.”

“The vice president in his response acknowledged the concerns raised by the participants and reiterated that the interest of the people of J&K and JKNC will be safeguarded,” the statement said.

However, the NC president said the decision will depend on the situation in J-K at that time.

“You (media) have started to decide what we will do. How will that happen. We will have to see how the situation of the state will be that time (elections),” he added.

When asked about his party expressing dismay over the recent statements, audio jingles and speeches made by some of the constituents of the PAGD targeting NC, Abdullah, who is the Lok Sabha MP from Srinagar, also said everyone should show tolerance.

“The statements (against NC) will come, but it should be our endeavour to show tolerance. If you cannot have tolerance, then you will not be able to do anything for the people. You should remember two things, tolerance and patience. Also, one should be ready to sacrifice himself,” he said.

Asked what advice he will give to Omar, the NC president said he cannot advise his son as he understands what needs to be done.

PDP, the other major constituent of the PAGD, had also downplayed the NC resolution saying it would not affect the unity of the amalgam.

“PAGD was conceived for a much larger cause than just an electoral alliance. If some constituent of the Alliance has reservations for any kind of electoral alliance, that will not impact our unity for the larger goal,” chief spokesman of the PDP Suhail Bukhari said in a tweet.

Besides the NC, the PAGD, which was formed on August 4, 2019, comprises the PDP, CPM, Awami National Conference and CPI.

During the 2020 District Development Council elections, the alliance contested and won 110 seats out of 280 with the NC winning 67 seats alone.

NEW DELHI: China’s People’s Liberation Army (PLA) has abducted a 17-year-old boy from inside Indian territory in Arunachal Pradesh’s Upper Siang district, state’s MP Tapir Gao said on Wednesday.

Gao said the teenager, identified as Miram Taron, was abducted by the PLA from Lungta Jor area under Siyungla area on Tuesday.

Taron’s friend Johny Yaiying, who managed to escape, informed the authorities about the kidnapping by the PLA, Gao told PTI over phone from Ziro, the district headquarters of Lower Subansiri district.

Both are local hunters and belong to Zido village.

The MP said the incident took place near the place where Tsangpo river enters India in Arunachal Pradesh.

Tsangpo is called as Siang in Arunachal Pradesh and Brahmaputra in Assam.

Earlier, Gao tweeted: “Chinese #PLA has abducted Sh Miram Taron, 17 years of Zido vill, yesterday 18th Jan 2022 from inside Indian territory, Lungta Jor area (China built 3-4 kms road inside India in 2018) under Siyungla area (Bishing village) of Upper Siang dist, Arunachal Pradesh”.

He tagged Prime Minister Narendra Modi, Union Home Minister Amit Shah, Defence Minister Rajnath Singh and the Indian Army in his tweets.

In September 2020, the PLA had abducted five youths from Arunachal Pradesh’s Upper Subansiri district and released them after about a week.

The latest incident came at a time when the Indian army continues to be engaged in a stand-off with the PLA in eastern Ladakh since April 2020.

India shares a 3,400 km-long Line of Actual Control (LAC) with China from Ladakh to Arunachal Pradesh.
