  • PDP will not remain silent about BJP’s onslaught on opposition parties: Mehbooba Mufti

    By PTI

POONCH/JAMMU: PDP president Mehbooba Mufti on Monday said his party would not remain silent about the alleged onslaught of the BJP on the opposition parties in pursuit of its goal of “making India a BJP Rashtra”.

The former chief minister said the gloomy faces of the people speak about the situation in Jammu and Kashmir, where thousands of youths have been jailed and an atmosphere of fear has been created.

“I want to ask all political parties in the country to wake up as what happened to J&K (after 2019) is finally reaching their necks. You preferred to remain silent or speak in a half-hearted manner but we will not remain silent and will fight not only for ourselves but for you as well,” Mehbooba said addressing a public meeting in the border district of Poonch.

The PDP leader, who is currently on a three-day tour of Pir Panjal region, said she was warning that BJP has turned J&K into a laboratory to experiment with its policies before their implementation in other parts of the country.

“The opposition parties in the country did not understand what was happening to us. Today when the BJP is trampling democracy by jailing opposition leaders with the help of the Enforcement Directorate and CBI, they have started feeling the heat,” she later told reporters.

She said the abrogation of Article 370 was unconstitutional but the majority of the leaders stayed silent.

“I am of the firm belief that we will get back Article 370 with interest. They will come and ask what else you want.”

Referring to the slapping of the Public Safety Act (PSA) on political leaders including her and two other former chief ministers, National Conference president Farooq Abdullah and his son Omar Abdullah, Mehbooba said J&K was turned into a jail and an atmosphere of fear was created to silence the people.

Mehbooba said they are not in favour of making India a “Hindu Rashtra” but their policies are aimed at making it a “BJP Rashtra” where everyone who aligns with them will be welcomed.

She also opposed the property tax and hiring of a previously blacklisted company by the J-K administration to fill vacancies in different government departments and said the youth are the worst sufferers of the policies of the administration.

The PDP chief said from Lt Governor to bureaucrats, everyone has been brought from outside and they (BJP) are claiming to install a chief minister from Jammu.

“Had they been serious, they would have installed a Lt Governor from Jammu or at least one of his advisors but they only believe in hoodwinking the public to get votes,” she said.

  • Decision to repeal farm laws welcome step, hope Centre reverses illegal changes in J&K too: Mehbooba

    By PTI

SRINAGAR: PDP president Mehbooba Mufti on Friday said the Centre’s decision to repeal three contentious farm laws is a welcome step and expressed hope that the Union government “course corrects” and “reverses the illegal changes” made in Jammu and Kashmir since August 2019.

“Decision to repeal farm laws & an apology is a welcome step, even though it stems from electoral compulsions & fear of drubbing in elections. Ironical that while BJP needs to please people in rest of India for votes, punishing & humiliating Kashmiris satisfies their major votebank,” she wrote on Twitter.

The People’s Democratic Party (PDP) chief alleged that the decision on August 5, 2019 to abrogate the provisions of Article 370 of the Constitution and bifurcate the erstwhile state of Jammu and Kashmir into Union territories was taken by the ruling Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) only to please its voters.

“Desecrating Indian constitution to dismember & disempower J&K was done only to please their voters. I hope they course correct here too & reverse the illegal changes made in J&K since August 2019,” the former Jammu and Kashmir chief minister said.

  • Mehbooba Mufti slams CDS Gen Bipin Rawat’s remarks on wanting further curbs in J&K

    By PTI

SRINAGAR: PDP president Mehbooba Mufti on Sunday charged that “repression” was the Centre’s only method to deal with the situation in Jammu and Kashmir.

Reacting to the remarks by Chief of Defence Staff General Bipin Rawat warning of further curbs in Kashmir to tackle the recent violence, Mehbooba also said his statement “contradicts” the official narrative that all is well in the valley.

“Even after turning Kashmir into an open air prison, Bipin Rawat’s statement comes as no surprise because repression is GOIs only method to deal with the situation in J&K. It also contradicts their official narrative that all is well here,” she alleged on Twitter.

While delivering the first Ravi Kant Singh Memorial Lecture in Assam on Saturday, Rawat said the freedom of movement that people in Jammu & Kashmir were starting to enjoy in recent times may be disrupted due to the current situation and urged for people’s cooperation in tackling the situation.

The PDP chief wondered what more measures were left to be implemented after “stringent, harsh & repressive measures” like “mass arrests”, suspension of internet at will, and setting up new security bunkers.

“After taking such stringent, harsh & repressive measures like mass arrests, suspension of internet at will, frisking people (not sparing even kids), seizing bikes plus two wheelers & setting up new security bunkers all over what is left to do?” the former Jammu and Kashmir chief minister said.

  • Centre disempowering people of Kashmir, says PDP chief Mehbooba Mufti

    By PTI

SRINAGAR: PDP president Mehbooba Mufti on Friday said the Centre was ‘disempowering’ the people of Jammu and Kashmir and suspecting them for having alleged links with militants is the new excuse used to ‘dispossess and humiliate’ Kashmiris.

She was reacting to the recent termination of six government employees on charges of alleged anti-national activities.

“No end to GOIs farmaans for disempowering people of J&K. Contrary to GOIs tall claims of getting investment to create employment they are deliberately laying off gov(ernment) employees despite knowing that people in J&K rely on government jobs for their livelihood,” Mehbooba wrote on Twitter.

She said “hounding” Kashmiris endlessly deflates the Centre’s “fake narrative that all is well in J-K”.

“Links to militants is the new excuse used to dispossess & humiliate Kashmiris,” she said.
