Events across the country celebrated the song’s role in fostering India’s cultural and patriotic heritage. Mahatma Gandhi himself once lauded the song’s power to inspire passion, non-violence, and self-sacrifice.

Historical context reveals that opposition to ‘Vande Mataram’ is not a new phenomenon. During the fight for independence, prominent Muslim leaders like Maulana Hasrat Mohani and Maulana Abul Kalam Azad sang the song, even amidst criticism. Records also indicate that Muslim leaders, including the Indian National Congress president in 1896, participated in public renditions without objection.

Analysts suggest that current resistance mirrors the 1937 stance of Jinnah and the Muslim League, who objected to the song on religious grounds. Today’s opposition is viewed by many as an echo of outdated ideologies rather than genuine religious apprehension. In response to dissent, patriotic groups have organized public performances of ‘Vande Mataram,’ including outside the residences of prominent critics.

‘Vande Mataram,’ penned by Bankim Chandra Chattopadhyay in 1875 and frequently banned by the British, has a rich history of inspiring national pride and sacrifice. Freedom fighters from various religious backgrounds, such as Ashfaqullah Khan, Maulana Mohammad Ali, and Subhas Chandra Bose’s Indian National Army, have all sung this iconic song.

Ultimately, the debate calls for extremists to recognize the song’s historical significance and its broad appeal among patriotic Indians of all communities. ‘Vande Mataram’ stands as a powerful, unifying symbol of India’s heritage, with objections often rooted more in ideology than in sincere religious concern.

The Prime Minister highlighted how the words ‘Vande Mataram’ resonate as a driving force, inspiring confidence in the present and instilling the courage to achieve any goal. He quoted, ‘Aisa koi sankalp nahi, jiski siddhi na ho sake. Aisa koi lakshya nahi, jo hum bharatwasi paa na sakein,’ underscoring the song’s power to motivate the nation.

He further elaborated on the profound experience of collective singing, describing it as ‘beyond expression.’ The unity of voices, rhythm, and emotion in singing ‘Vande Mataram’ creates an unparalleled wave of energy that stirs the heart. This harmony, he noted, fills participants with a shared thrill and a pulsating sense of national spirit.

November 7th was declared a ‘historic day’ as the nation commenced a year-long commemoration of this significant anniversary. The Prime Minister extended greetings to all citizens, stating that this milestone will infuse millions with renewed energy. He also paid a solemn tribute to the countless freedom fighters who dedicated their lives to the ideals represented by the song.

The year-long celebrations officially began with a grand event where the Prime Minister inaugurated the commemoration. During the ceremony, he released a commemorative stamp and coin, and launched a dedicated portal for the 150th anniversary. The event featured a mass singing of the complete ‘Vande Mataram,’ with citizens from all walks of life participating both at the main venue and across public spaces nationwide. Dignitaries including Union Minister Gajendra Singh Shekhawat, Delhi Lieutenant Governor Vinai Saxena, and Delhi Chief Minister Rekha Gupta were in attendance.

The ‘Vande Mataram’ composition, originally a Sanskrit poem by Bankim Chandra Chattopadhyay in 1876 and later featured in his novel ‘Anandamath,’ has long symbolized Indian nationalism. Its rendition as a hymn to the motherland, personifying India as a goddess, has consistently evoked patriotism and unity, playing a crucial role in the country’s freedom movement.

The camp brought together 601 NCC cadets from five key Indian states: Andhra Pradesh, Telangana, West Bengal, Bihar, and Jharkhand. Their performances vibrantly depicted the nation’s cultural unity, national integration, and the confident spirit of its youth. The chief guest, Brigadier Abhijit Sharma, Deputy Director General NCC, Bihar-Jharkhand Directorate, lauded the cadets’ talent, dedication, and discipline. He emphasized that “India’s greatest strength lies in its unity amidst diversity, and institutions like the NCC keep this spirit alive.”

Attendees included Brigadier S. Gopi Krishnan (SM), Camp Commandant; Manoj Thakur, Head of Project, Koderma Thermal Power Station; Sukhmoy Nayak, Deputy General Manager (HR), KTPS; Dr. Ayodhya Kumar, Principal, Government Polytechnic Koderma; and Lemanshu Kumar, City Manager, Jhumri Tilaiya Municipality. All distinguished guests were honored with mementos by the chief guest.

Cadets captivated the audience with group songs, group dances, solo dances, and solo songs, bringing to life the folk cultures, traditions, and patriotism of various Indian states. The performances filled the venue with patriotism, harmony, and cultural camaraderie. Brigadier Abhijit Sharma further recognized outstanding cadets, Girls Cadre Instructors, Associate NCC Officers, and permanent instructors with mementos, trophies, and medals. Camp Commandant Brigadier S. Gopi Krishnan and Deputy Camp Commandant Vijay Kumar presented a memento to the chief guest, expressing their gratitude.

Adding to the cultural splendor, popular singer Naveen Jain Pandey from Jhumri Tilaiya enthralled the gathering with regional Jharkhand songs and patriotic numbers, earning him a memento from Brigadier Abhijit Sharma. Colonel Vijay Kumar also presented mementos to Ajay Agarwal (Director, Chlorophyll School), Dilip Singh (District Public Relations Officer), Vikas Kumar Seth, and Ajit Kumar.

Lieutenant Santosh Kumar, Nodal Officer and NCC Officer, concluded the program by extending thanks to all supporting entities. Special acknowledgments were made to the Municipality for sanitation services and Koderma Thermal Power Station for facilitating educational tours for the cadets, alongside appreciation for the permanent instructors, JCOs, NCOs, NCC Officers, Girls Cadre Instructors, and all staff of the 45 Jharkhand Battalion.

The successful organization of the “Ek Bharat Shreshtha Bharat – 1/25” National Camp served as a powerful symbol of cultural harmony, youth leadership, self-discipline, and national unity. The participation of 601 cadets unequivocally demonstrated that the youth are the foundation of a stronger India.
