  • Government declares Pakistani handler of 2016 Pathankot air base attack a designated terrorist

    NEW DELHI: Ali Kashif Jan, the Pakistani handler of the 2016 terror attack on Pathankot air base, has been designated as a terrorist by the government.

    Jan alias Jan Ali Kashif is the third terrorist to have been designated as a terrorist by the central government in last five days.

    The Union home ministry said in a notification than Jan was the handler of Punjab’s Pathankot air force station terror attack in January 2016 in which seven security personnel and one civilian were killed.

    Jan is also accused in various cases registered and being investigated by the National Investigation Agency. He had been declared proclaimed offender in these cases.

    Jan continues to operate from the Jaish-e-Mohammed launching pads located in Pakistan and is involved in recruitment of cadres for their training and coordinate attack plans at targets in India, the home ministry said.

  • All check-posts in Punjab’s Pathankot put on high alert after grenade blast near Army cantonment

    PATHANKOT: A grenade blast occurred near the gate of the Army cantonment here following which an alert has been sounded in the border district, police said on Monday.

    No casualty was reported in the blast that took place on Sunday night, they said.

    Some unidentified persons on a motorcycle hurled the grenade in front of the Triveni Dwar of the military area near Dheerapul here, police said, adding they were verifying CCTV footage of the area.

    “The CCTV footage is being analysed,” Pathankot Senior Superintendent of Police Surendra Lamba told PTI.

    Some parts of the hand grenade have been recovered from the site and a forensic team has collected samples, the SSP said.

    After the blast, an alert has been sounded in the district and vehicles were being checked at various points in and around Pathankot.

    Punjab Deputy Chief Minister Sukhjinder Singh Randhawa on Monday said he has called a meeting of senior officers of the Amritsar border zone and Jalandhar zone on Tuesday to review the law and order situation and security in the state.

    The Pathankot Air Force base was attacked by terrorists five years ago.

  • One Army jawan dies, others suffer injuries while training under ‘severe’ weather near Pathankot

    NEW DELHI: One Army jawan died and a few others were injured during a supervised training activity at Mamun military station near Pathankot in Punjab on Saturday as the weather conditions were “severe”, said senior officials.

    The senior Army officials said that the affected jawans have been admitted at the military hospital in Pathankot and are being provided with required medical care. The officials said the weather was hot and humid when the training activity was taking place.

    They said that the training activity was organised, supervised and monitored in the area under the 9 Corps of the Indian Army. They said due to “severe” weather conditions, there has been one fatal casualty and a few jawans have been admitted to the hospital.

  • Jammu Air Force station explosion: Alert sounded in Punjab’s Pathankot

    CHANDIGARH: An alert has been sounded in Punjab’s border district of Pathankot on Sunday after two explosives-laden drones crashed into the high-security Indian Air Force station at Jammu airport, officials said.

    Tight vigil is being maintained near key installations in Pathankot, they said.

    Five years ago, the Pathankot Air Force base had come under terror attack.

    Patrolling has been strengthened near sensitive areas in and around Pathankot and additional forces have been deployed, police said.

    “We are on our guard in view of the situation. Whenever there is an incident of this kind, maximum alert is sounded in neighbouring areas,” Pathankot’s Senior Superintendent of Police, Surendra Lamba, told PTI over phone when asked if additional security measures have been put in place in wake of the Jammu incident.

    “We are checking vigorously our inter-state border movement. We have deployed additional forces also,” he said, adding, specialised commandos and SWAT teams of Punjab Police are being deployed strategically.

    Checking of vehicles headed to Jammu and entering Pathankot from J-K side has been intensified, Lamba said.

    The drones crashed into the Air Force station at Jammu airport in the early hours of Sunday.

    Two IAF personnel were injured in the explosions that took place around 1.40 am within six minutes of each other.

    The first blast ripped off the roof of a single-storey building at the technical area of the airport manned by the IAF in Satwari area of the city.

    The second one was on the ground, the officials said.

  • BSF thwarts infiltration bid of three Pakistani intruders along India border in Punjab’s Pathankot

    CHANDIGARH: The BSF thwarted an infiltration attempt by three Pakistani intruders along the India-Pakistan international border in Punjab’s Pathankot district, officials said on Thursday.

    Border Security Force personnel opened fire when they noticed suspicious movement of three people trying to enter into the Indian territory around 10:15 pm Wednesday, a BSF official said.

    He said the three went back after the BSP troops posted at the Paharipur border outpost fired gunshots to stop them.

    A joint search operation was being conducted in the area by the BSF and the Punjab Police, a police official said.
