Senior CPI(M) leader Vrinda Karat unleashed a blistering attack on the Modi government Wednesday, charging it with muzzling dissent in Parliament while pushing opaque trade pacts with the United States.

From Udaipur, Karat zeroed in on Lok Sabha dynamics. The opposition leader’s platform, she claimed, is being curtailed deliberately. ‘BJP dictates what issues we can raise, sidelining real concerns,’ she told media persons. This approach, according to her, undermines the foundational spirit of legislative discourse.

Parliament’s functionality is ‘deteriorating rapidly,’ Karat warned. Vital traditions like thorough deliberations on major bills are fading. Fewer meeting days, coerced committee reviews, and evasion of serious topics all contribute to what she calls a ‘crisis of parliamentary soul.’

The spotlight fell heavily on the India-US trade negotiations. Karat branded the emerging deal as lopsided and shrouded in mystery. ‘We’re learning details from Trump’s tweets, not our own government,’ she quipped. Conflicting messages—from early hints to Goyal’s joint statement tease—have left the public guessing.

‘Tariff consensus? Non-tariff agreements? Where’s the full disclosure?’ Karat probed. She accused authorities of concealing negotiation intricacies, depriving citizens of informed consent on deals impacting millions.

Optimism flowed when discussing Kerala’s electoral battleground. Karat hailed the LDF’s track record after back-to-back victories. ‘Welfare initiatives speak for themselves. Voters will reward performance, potentially granting us a historic third term,’ she forecasted.

As national politics heats up, Karat’s intervention highlights fault lines over governance transparency, trade diplomacy, and regional power plays. Her voice amplifies opposition demands for accountability in India’s democratic institutions.

As India’s Parliament gears up for its crucial Budget Session, Lok Sabha Speaker Om Birla described the President’s opening address as a guiding light for the country, transcending customary formalities.

In a post on X ahead of President Droupadi Murmu’s 11 AM address to both Houses, Birla wrote: ‘More than tradition, this speech delivers vital guidance to the entire nation. It clarifies directions for upcoming policies, decisions, and initiatives, presenting the essence of our development path ahead.’

Birla portrayed it as democracy in action – public dreams fueling policy, Parliament turning them into reality. He shared an insightful video chronicling central budget milestones.

India’s 1947-48 debut budget totaled 197 crore rupees in a 2.78 lakh crore economy, fixated on essentials: food, administration, infrastructure basics. Green Revolution era ramped up rural and public investments for grain self-reliance.

Post-1991 liberalization, budgets ballooned. 1991-92: 1 lakh crore budget, $270B GDP. By 2000-01: 3-4 lakh crore spend, $468B GDP. 2010-11: 10-12 lakh crore, $1.67T GDP. 2020-21 pandemic year: 35 lakh crore budget, $2.67T GDP.

Now, over 50 lakh crore budgets power a $4T+ economy, 25,000 times larger than inception. Modern emphases include mega infra projects, expressways, high-speed rails, airports; Digital India, startup ecosystem, defense production, renewables, AI tech, data hubs, chip manufacturing, and self-reliance drives.

This historical context amplifies the significance of today’s session, where the President’s words will frame debates on sustaining this phenomenal growth trajectory.

The Iranian parliament recently passed a new bill that introduces harsh penalties for those caught spying for the United States and Israel. This action follows a 12-day conflict between Iran and Israel, during which the U.S. provided support to Israel, even going as far as attacking Iranian nuclear facilities. The bill now awaits presidential approval to become law. Following the recent skirmish, Iranian security agencies apprehended numerous individuals suspected of espionage on behalf of the U.S. and Israel. The government believes that this stringent new law is essential for bolstering national security.

President of Nepal, Ram Chandra Poudel, dissolved the House of Representatives on Friday, acting upon the recommendation of newly appointed Prime Minister Sushila Karki. A notice from the President’s office stated that the House was dissolved from 11:00 PM on September 12, 2025. The notice also announced that the date for new parliamentary elections has been set for March 21, 2026. Sushila Karki, the former Chief Justice, was sworn in as Nepal’s first female Prime Minister on Friday, and will lead the interim government. This action brings an end to the political uncertainty that has gripped Nepal, following the resignation of KP Sharma Oli from the Prime Minister’s post due to youth protests against alleged corruption and social media restrictions. President Poudel administered the oath of office to 73-year-old Sushila Karki. The newly formed caretaker government has been tasked with holding new parliamentary elections within six months. The oath-taking ceremony was attended by the Chief Justice of Nepal, senior government officials, security heads, and members of the diplomatic community. News of Karki’s appointment was met with celebrations by Gen Z groups outside the President’s office in Maharajganj, Kathmandu. Former Prime Minister Baburam Bhattarai was the only former Prime Minister present at the ceremony. The decision to appoint an acting Prime Minister followed consultations with leaders from major political parties, legal experts, and respected members of civil society. Prime Minister KP Sharma Oli was forced to resign after widespread protests by the Gen Z group. The main demands of the protesters included curbing corruption, ending partiality, and lifting restrictions on social media sites. At least 51 people, including an Indian citizen, died in the recent Gen Z protests against corruption and restrictions on social media platforms in Nepal.

In the Vice President election, NDA candidate CP Radhakrishnan emerged victorious. He defeated INDIA candidate Sudarshan Reddy by a margin of 152 votes. Radhakrishnan secured 452 votes, while Sudarshan Reddy received 300 votes. Reddy’s vote count fell short of expectations. The INDIA alliance had hoped for more votes, but they didn’t materialize. The alliance has 315 MPs in the Parliament, resulting in a shortfall of 15 votes.

Congress General Secretary Jairam Ramesh posted on X at 5:14 PM, stating that the opposition was united and all 315 MPs were present for voting, calling it an unprecedented 100% turnout. This claim suggests that the opposition was 15 votes short. Every party is now claiming that there were no cross-voters from their camp.

Meanwhile, the NDA has 427 MPs and received 25 extra votes. There are a total of 788 MPs in both the Lok Sabha and Rajya Sabha. Out of these, 781 MPs were eligible to vote, with 7 seats vacant. The NDA has 427 MPs out of 781, while the opposition has 354 MPs. The INDIA alliance accounts for 315 MPs. There are 39 MPs who are not aligned with either the NDA or the INDIA alliance. It is important to know how these 39 MPs voted.

Despite there being no whip in the Vice President election, the opposition managed to persuade all its members to vote. Highlighting the significance of the elections, two Lok Sabha members from the Trinamool Congress, Sudeep Bandopadhyay and Saugata Roy, arrived to vote despite being unwell.

The National Democratic Alliance (NDA) has expressed strong confidence in the victory of its candidate, CP Radhakrishnan, while opposition parties are uniting in support of their nominee, Justice B Sudershan Reddy. Prior to the election, both the NDA and opposition parties conducted mock polls to guide MPs on proper voting procedures. Prime Minister Narendra Modi expressed enthusiasm for Radhakrishnan’s candidacy, anticipating his enriching contribution to the office. Union Parliamentary Affairs Minister Kiren Rijiju is confident Radhakrishnan will receive even more votes than the NDA’s strength suggests, citing potential support from other MPs.

A large-scale protest erupted in Kathmandu, Nepal, as thousands demonstrated against government actions. The demonstration centered on restrictions imposed on social media and widespread corruption. The situation escalated when some protesters entered the Parliament building, leading to the use of tear gas by police to disperse the crowd. The movement reflects deeper grievances, particularly among the younger generation, who are expressing long-held discontent with corruption, unemployment, and limitations on civil rights. The government’s decision to ban social media platforms has fueled public dissatisfaction, transforming the protest into a significant mass movement. The intrusion into the Parliament building has raised serious questions regarding security protocols. The protest has spread throughout Kathmandu, with demonstrators voicing strong opposition to Prime Minister KP Sharma Oli’s government, chanting slogans such as ‘We want transparency,’ ‘Give back our rights,’ and ‘Stop corruption.’ Clashes between police and protesters have been reported in multiple locations. To regain control, the government has implemented a curfew in key areas and increased security deployments at government buildings and crucial sites.
