  • Commotion at BJP ‘Parivartan Yatra’ in Hooghly after Trinamool stops saffron party’s rally

    By PTI
UTTARPARA: BJP’s ‘Parivartan Yatra’ rally on Tuesday witnessed commotion when it was passing by a Trinamool Congress (TMC) party office at Uttarpara in Hooghly district.

Activists of the TMC blocked G T Road as the rally neared its office leading to arguments between the workers of the ruling party and the BJP, police said.

A timely intervention by the police prevented the situation from turning worse and the rally with BJP members chanting ‘Jai Shree Ram’ resumed its journey.

TMC leader Tapas Roy said, the BJP was instigating trouble to disturb the prevailing peaceful environment in the state.

“In the name of movement they are trying to foment trouble but we will not be swayed by any provocation,” he said.

BJP leader Prabir Ghosal said the attempt by the TMC to create disturbance did not succeed as the stand-off lasted for a few minutes with the timely intervention by the police.

TMC sources alleged that the BJP had installed a loudspeaker in front of the TMC party office and raised provocative slogans against the party and Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee which incensed their activists.

However, the saffron party denied the allegation as “baseless”.

BJP chief J P Nadda had flagged off the party’s ‘Parivartan Yatra’ in poll-bound West Bengal in early February.

  • HC refuses to pass interim order to stop BJP’s Parivartan Yatra rallies in Bengal

KOLKATA: The Calcutta High Court on Tuesday refused to pass any interim order on a public interest litigation (PIL) praying for its intervention to stop the BJP’s ongoing ‘Parivartan Yatra’ rallies across West Bengal and directed that it will hear the matter on February 11.

Claiming that the yatra would affect the Covid-19 situation and law and order in the state, the petitioner prayed for an order that the rallies be stopped.

A division bench comprising justices Rajesh Bindal and Aniruddha Roy directed that it will hear the matter on Thursday.

The petitioner’s lawyer prayed for an interim order to stop the yatra till February 11, which was refused by the court.

The BJP has started a month-long Parivartan Yatra from February 6, as part of which it intends to take out five rallies criss-crossing the state ahead of the assembly elections in West Bengal due in April-May.

BJP national president JP Nadda flagged off the second phase of the yatra on Tuesday at Tarapith in Birbhum district.

The first phase was launched on Saturday at Nabadwip in Nadia district.

  • Bengal cops halt BJP’s Parivartan Yatra in Murshidabad for ‘route breach’

    By PTI
KOLKATA: The BJP on Monday had to take an alternative route for its ‘Parivartan Yatra’ in West Bengal’s Murshidabad after the police stopped its rath from venturing into some of the district’s “sensitive pockets”, a senior police officer said.

District BJP leader Gourishankar Ghosh, however, claimed that the party had intimated the administration about the route being taken for the yatra well in advance, and no objection was raised back then.

The ‘Parivartan Yatra’ on a rath was flagged off by BJP national president J P Nadda from Nabadwip in Nadia district on February 6, as part of the saffron party’s outreach programme ahead of the assembly polls.

It travelled through Nakasipara before entering Murshidabad on February 7.

Members of the party, decked in saffron attire, are interacting with common people, and distributing pamphlets highlighting central government schemes and development work, as part of the yatra.

An AC van, which has been converted into rath, has faces of BJP leaders painted on it.

According to the senior officer, the rath, which was on its way to Bahrampur, was “told to avoid a particular route, which has a few sensitive pockets.

The vehicle was stopped as it was passing by Bharat Sevashram Sangha at Beldanga in the district”.

Ghosh, on his part, said no such request was made to him or the other the members of his party when the administration was approached for permission.

Echoing him, state BJP leader Kalyan Choubey said, “We held discussions with the police before charting the yatra route.

However, we were taken by surprise when the police stopped us at Beldanga.

We sat on the street there for at least three hours.

” “Later, as suggested by the police, we decided to take an alternative route via National Highway-34 bypass as we wanted to steer clear of any untoward situation,” he added.

Over the next few days, four more chariots of the BJP are set to roll out in Bengal, all of which are likely to be unveiled by the party’s top leaders.

The rallies are expected to crisscross the entire state, touching all 294 constituencies.

Assembly elections in Bengal are likely to be held in April-May.

  • Bengal polls: Nadda flags off BJP’s rath yatra, says people have decided to end TMC rule

    By Express News Service
KOLKATA: BJP’s national president JP Nadda on Saturday flagged off the party’s rath yatra from Nabadwip in Nadia and asserting that the people of Bengal have decided to say ‘goodbye’ to Mamata Banerjee-led government in the upcoming Assembly elections.

After having lunch with 30 farmers sitting in the same queue, Nadda hit out at Mamata Banerjee while addressing a rally in Malda before flagging off the rath yatra.

“You (Mamata) deprived Bengal’s 70 lakh farmers by barring PM Kishan Nidhi. Now, you are giving a nod to allow the central scheme in your state. You are repenting just before the elections after depriving the farmers of the benefits for two years. Bengal’s people will say goodbye in the 2021 Assembly elections,” Nadda said in the rally.

He accused the Trinamool Congress-led government of politicising the administration and criminalising the police. “The Ma, Mati, Manush (mother, land, and people) slogan has been reduced to dictatorship, tolabaji (extortion), and appeasement. The ruling party has betrayed the trust that people had reposed in it. The ruling party’s leaders have secured their personal interests and benefits under the leadership of Mamata Banerjee and the Centre’s financial assistance meant for cyclone Amphan victims were misappropriated,” Nadda lashed out.

Referring to Mamata Banerjee’s anger that was conspicuous in presence of Prime Minister Narendra Modi in a central government’s event at the Victoria Memorial on the occasion of Netaji Jayanti (January 23), Nadda took a jibe at the Bengal CM saying, “Why does she hate Jay Shri Ram slogan so much? Is it wrong to connect with the culture of India? The TMC wants to ignore the country’s culture for the sake of vote-bank politics.”

Irked by the Jay Shri Ram slogan, Mamata had refused to address the audience at the Victoria Memorial event.

On branding of BJP leaders from Delhi as outsiders by TMC, Nadda said the party’s Bengal functionaries will protect the culture of Bengal and steer it to progress.

“The Mamata Banerjee government has politicised the administration, criminalised the police, and institutionalised corruption,” he alleged.

He later flagged off an improvised ‘Rath’ as part of the BJP’s ‘Parivartan Yatra’ to bring about a change in West Bengal from Nabadwip, the birthplace of 15th-century saint Chaitanya Mahaprabhu.

He said Union Home Minister Amit Shah will inaugurate two of the other four such ‘Rath Yatra’ slated later this month.
