  • Police seize mephedrone worth Rs 36.9 cr, bust narcotics manufacturing unit in Maharashtra’s Palghar

    THANE: The police have seized mephedrone (MD) worth Rs 36.9 crore and arrested seven persons in an operation spanning over the last five days, involving a raid at a drug manufacturing unit at a farmhouse in Maharashtra’s Palghar district, an official said on Monday.

    Mephedrone is a synthetic stimulant drug of the amphetamine and cathinone classes. Slang names include drone, M-CAT, White Magic, meow meow and bubble.

    The police have recovered 18,453.7 gm of the banned drug, of which 18,100 gm was seized during the raid at the manufacturing unit and lab operated from a farmhouse in Mokhada on Sunday, Deputy Commissioner of Police (Crime) MBVV police Avinash Ambure told reporters.

    Liquid and powder raw materials worth Rs 2.73 lakh, chemicals worth Rs 2.59 lakh, besides vehicles, two country-made pistols, four magazines, and 14 cartridges were seized from seven accused, he said.

    Based on a tip-off, the police had on October 18 raided a hotel and arrested Sunny Bharat Salekar, Vishal Godse, Deepak Dubey, and Shahbaz E and seized 251.7 gm of mephedrone, some firearms and cash, the official said.

    These arrests led the police to Tanvir Nissar Ahmed Choudhary, who was apprehended with 102 gm of the contraband on Saturday and another accused Gautam Gunagar Ghosh who was also arrested on the same day, he said.

    Ghosh informed the police about Chandrashekar Pinjar who operated an MD manufacturing unit at his farmhouse in Mokhada, the official said.

    The police raided the premises on Sunday and seized 18,100 gm of narcotics, besides machinery and accessories, he said.

    All the seven accused have offences under the Arms Act and Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances (NDPS) Act to their name, the official said.

    Choudhary, a resident of Bhayandar, is an event organiser, while Ghosh is a businessman and Pinjar, a civil contractor, he said.

  • Three workers killed, 12 injured in blast at chemical factory in Palghar’s Tarapur MIDC

    PALGHAR: At least three workers were killed and 12 others injured in a blast at a chemical factory located at Tarapur MIDC in Boisar town of Maharashtra’s Palghar district on Wednesday, officials said.

    The incident occurred at 4.20 pm at the unit that produces gamma acid used in the textile industry, they said.

    The intensity of the blast was such that the roof of the plant got ripped off, the officials said.

    “Due to the explosion in the reactor vessel at the chemical factory, three workers died and 12 others suffered injuries. While the bodies of the victims were sent to a government hospital for post-mortem, the injured were admitted to a nearby hospital,” Palghar police spokesperson Sachin Navadkar said.

    On being alerted, personnel from the Boisar police station and local fire brigade rushed to the spot, he said.

    A total of 18 employees were working at the factory when the blast occurred, senior inspector of Boisar police station Pradeep Kasbe said.

    In the preliminary probe, plant in-charge confirmed that the blast occurred due to the pressure in the reactor vessel, he said.

    “The plant manufactures gamma acid that is used in the textile industry. The reactor vessel exploded when the process was underway to mix sodium sulphate with ammonia,” he said.

    The police will seek technical support from the officials of the Directorate of Industrial Safety and Health to probe the incident, he said.

    Following the gas leakage, the workers present in the unit complained of giddiness and other complications, he said.

    One of them, identified as Bhagwat Choupal (22), died, the official said.

    Four others were admitted to a nearby hospital where they were undergoing treatment, he said.

    Officials of the Directorate of Industrial Safety and Health rushed to the plant along with a factory inspector to conduct a probe into the incident, Kadam said.

  • Former Tata Sons head Cyrus Mistry killed in car crash in Palghar

    MUMBAI: Former Tata Sons chairman Cyrus Pallonji Mistry was on Sunday killed in a road accident after his car hit a divider in Maharashtra’s Palghar district neighbouring Mumbai, a senior police officer said.

    He was 54.

    Mistry was travelling from Ahmedabad to Mumbai in a Mercedes car, he said.

    “The accident took place around 3.15 pm, when Mistry was travelling to Mumbai from Ahmedabad.  The accident took place on a bridge over the Surya river. It seems an accident,” said Palghar district superintendent of police, Balasaheb Patil.

    A Kasa police station officer said the accident occurred at Charoti Naka on the Surya river bridge under the Kasa police station limits.

    His car had hit a divider, Palghar police officials were quoted as saying to ANI.

    One of the three persons travelling with him died on the spot, as per ANI.

    The other two have been rushed to a nearby hospital.

    The body of Mistry has been shifted to the Kasa Rural Hospital for postmortem.

    He is survived by his wife and two children. He also has a brother Shapoorji.

    Maharashtra CM Eknath Shinde expressed his shock and condolences. “Shocked to hear about the passing away of former Tata Sons chief Cyrus Mistry. He was not only a successful entrepreneur but also was seen in the industry as a young, bright & visionary personality. It’s a great loss… My heartfelt tribute”, he said.

    In 2012, Mistry’s name made headlines when he was selected to lead one of India’s largest business conglomerates Tata Sons after Ratan Tata stepped down. Cyrus was chosen as chairman based on the representation of Shapoorji Palonji Group, the largest shareholder in Tata Group.

    On 27th June this year, Cyrus Mistry’s father Pallonji Mistry passed away at 93. He also has two daughters, Laila and Aloo. The latter is married to Noel Tata, the half-brother of Ratan Tata.

  • Mile tremor in Maharashtra’s Palghar; no casualty

    PALGHAR: A tremor of 3.9 magnitude was recorded in Maharashtra’s Palghar district on Sunday morning, an official said.

    There was no report of any casualty or property damage so far, district disaster cell chief Vivekanand Kadam said.

    The tremor was felt at 5.35 am, he said.

    The district has experienced frequent tremors since November 2018, specially in Dundalwadi village of Talasari taluka and also in parts of Dahanu taluka.

    The seismic activity in the district on Sunday was recorded after a couple of months.

  • Maharshtra: Man held for duping shopkeepers by calling in woman’s voice

    THANE: Police have arrested a 44-year-old man from Nalasopara in neighbouring Palghar district for allegedly cheating several shopkeepers by making phone calls in a woman’s voice, an official said on Friday.

    The officials of the crime branch of Navi Mumbai police arrested the accused, identified as Manish Shashikant Ambekar, and his accomplice Anthony Thayappa Jangli (37), he said.

    Addressing a press conference at the N M police commissionerate headquarters, DCP (crime) Suresh Mengde said that Ambekar used to pose as a woman doctor and order medicines from medical shops and golden bangles from jewellers.

    The accused used to tell the victims to send someone from their shops saying she wanted to buy medicines or bangles.

    But when somebody from the shop arrived at the designated spot, the accused would approach that person saying the woman doctor has sent him.

    He would then hand over fake Rs 2,000 note to that person, the police official said. After getting the remaining amount, he would flee from the spot, he added.

    Police had received several such complaints from Navi Mumbai area, following which they launched a probe and nabbed the accused.

    The accused had committed similar offences in Alibaug, Pen (in Raigad district), Vashi (Navi Mumbai) and Gujarat also, the police official said, adding that a total of 20 such offences had been registered against them at different police stations.

    The police have seized a car and other material, collectively worth Rs 5 lakh, from the accused duo, he said.

    PALGHAR: Maharashtra Chief Minister Uddhav Thackeray on Thursday warned that coronavirus is still hanging over people’s heads like a sword of Damocles and the threat is far from over. The chief minister was speaking at the virtual function to inaugurate the district headquarters building complex in Palghar, and civic and government-run health facilities in Virar and Vasai.

    “Coronavirus is still hanging over our heads like a sword of Damocles and the threat is far from over. It is good that oxygen plants are being installed while setting up COVID-19 hospitals to prevent casualties,” Thackeray said.

    Talking about the facilities made available in Palghar, the chief minister said that the region was different from other districts of the state, as it had both forest land and a sea coast, with a rich tribal culture and historic locations.

    As it is adjacent to Mumbai, Palghar has been neglected for long and it will not be in the future, he said.

    Deputy Chief Minister Ajit Pawar, ministers Eknath Shinde, Dada Buse, MPs, MLAs and senior officials were present for the virtual inauguration of the administrative complex, developed by CIDCO, comprising the collector ‘s office, Zilla Parishad office and DSP office.

  • Maharashtra: Heavy rains in Thane, Palghar; boy drowns, vehicles damaged in wall collapse

    THANE: Heavy rains lashed Maharashtra’s Thane and Palghar districts during the night and on Monday morning, causing flooding at several places and claiming the life of a minor boy, officials said.

    Thane city received 151.33 mm rain between 9.30 p.m on Sunday and 7.30 a.m on Monday, an official from local civic control room said.

    The neighbouring Palghar district also witnessed heavy showers and received 108.67 mm downpour in the same period, authorities said.

    Firemen and disaster cell teams received several calls of tree falls and inundation in both the districts, officials said.

    A four-year-old boy drowned after being swept away in a swollen drain in Thane’s Ulhasnagar township on Sunday, an official at the police control said.

    The body was later fished out and sent to a government hospital for postmortem, he said, adding that a case of accidental death was registered.

    A 40-year-old watchman was severely injured when a tree fell on him at a residential complex on Ghodbunder Road in Thane city on Sunday evening.

    Besides, the wall of a housing complex on Ghodbunder Road collapsed, damaging five cars and as many other vehicles, civic authorities said.

    There were incidents of wall collapse and flooding in some other low-lying areas also, Thane Municipal Corporation’s regional disaster management cell chief Santosh Kadam said.

    In Palghar, several places in Vasai and Nallasopara witnessed heavy rains, leading to water-logging in low-lying areas.

    A four-year-old boy fell in an open drain in Nallasopara and was feared drowned.

    Efforts were on to trace the minor, Vasai-Virar Municipal Corporation’s chief fire officer Dilip Palav said.

    In Vasai area of Palghar, at least 80 cooking gas cylinders were washed away in the flood waters, local police said.

    Later, the police with the help of firemen shifted the cylinders to a safe place, they said.

  • Maharashtra: Two mild tremors hit Palghar, no casualties

    PALGHAR: Palghar district of Maharashtra experienced two mild tremors in the gap of less than 12 hours, and no casualties or damage to property were reported, an official said on Thursday.

    A tremor of 3.1 magnitude was witnessed at 9.35 pm on Wednesday, while another measuring 3.7 in magnitude hit at 7 am on Thursday, the tehsildar of Dahanu said.

    There were no casualties and loss of property because of the tremors that hit the vicinity of Dundalwadi village, which is the epicentre for all the tremors witnessed in the district, Palghar district disaster control officer Vivekanand Kadam said.

    The district has been experiencing tremors of varying intensities since November, 2018, and the epicentre of these tremors is Dundhalwadi between Dahanu and Talasari talukas.
