  • Army man arrested for providing classified documents to Pakistan’s ISI

    By PTI
NEW DELHI: Two persons, including an Army man, have been arrested under the Official Secrets Act for allegedly providing classified documents to the Inter-Services Intelligence of Pakistan, the Delhi Police said on Thursday.

The Army headquarters have confirmed that the documents in question were classified in nature, they said.

The development comes after a 34-year-old vegetable supplier at the Pokhran Army base camp was held for allegedly getting sensitive documents from an Army man for money and providing them to the Inter-Services Intelligence (ISI).

The vegetable supplier, Habeeb Khan, was picked up on Tuesday by the Delhi Police from Pokhran in Rajasthan, officials had said on Wednesday.

The Delhi Police’s Crime Branch received information that some sensitive documents related to defence establishment were being sent to the neighbouring country through spy network.

“We got input about the involvement of one Habibur Rehman. Our team then conducted a raid and arrested him from Pokhran after due verification. Some secret documents were recovered from his possession and a case was registered against him under the Official Secrets Act,” Special Commissioner of Police (Crime) Praveer Ranjan said at a press conference.

During the course of investigation, it was found that Army man Paramjit was the link man in the crime.

He was earlier posted at Pokhran where he came in contact with Rehman who asked him to share the secret documents, the officer said.

Paramjit is currently posted as a clerk at Agra Cantt, police said.

According to police, Rehman’s relatives are based in Pakistan’s Sindh and he had been to that country and met some people there involved in the spy racket.

Rehman was asked to share the documents with them and the money for doing the job was sent through hawala network, police said, adding that further investigation is underway in the matter.

“Both Rehman and Paramjit have been found involved in the illegal act. The Army headquarters have also confirmed that the documents shared by the duo were classified in nature,” a police officer said.

Multiple bank accounts used in the crime have been found, he said, adding the matter is being thoroughly investigated.

  • Two Army jawans held on spying charges: Punjab Police

    By Express News Service
CHANDIGARH: The Punjab Police on Tuesday busted a major cross-border espionage network with the arrest of two army personnel on charges of spying and providing classified documents to the Inter-Services Intelligence.

Director General of Police Dinkar Gupta said that Jalandhar Rural Police while investigating an NDPS case, seized confidential and secret documents related to the functioning and deployment of the Army from drug smuggler Ranvir Singh, who was arrested with heroin on May 24.

He said that during interrogation, Ranvir disclosed that he got these documents from one of the two soldiers, who was his friend, as they both belong to the same village.

“Ranvir motivated and lured the sepoy with financial benefits for sharing defence-related classified documents, following which the latter induced his friend, the other soldier, into such anti-national spying activities,” said the DGP.

  • Cyber fraud syndicate laundering money through cryptocurrency exchanges to fraudsters in Pakistan, China busted by MP Police

    By Express News Service
BHOPAL: An international syndicate that first lured young Indian businessmen into romance trap, then convinced them to invest huge sums in shell firms/companies through malicious web pages before laundering the invested sums in cryptocurrency to fraudsters based in Pakistan and China — has been busted by the Madhya Pradesh Police’s Cyber Cell.

Four people including Gurgaon-based chartered accountant Avik Kedia,  Delhi-based company secretary Dolly Makhija, Dilip Patel of Gujarat and Vicky Makhija of Delhi (Dolly Makhija’s brother) have been arrested by the MP Police Cyber Cell’s Special Investigation Team (SIT) which started the probe in the matter in May

According to Yogesh Chaudhary, the additional director general of police (ADG) MP Cyber Cell, two months back the young son of a Bhopal-based businessman approached the state police cyber cell headquarters.

“The young businessman came in contact with a Japan-based woman Doris through online dating app Bumble in March. The woman who claimed to be a business and economics analyst lured the young businessman to invest in trading of spices through a web page, which actually turned out to be malicious. As guided by Doris, the young investor invested over Rs 97 lakh in the current accounts of five companies/firms, which later turned out to be shell firms/companies,” Chaudhary told The New Indian Express.

After investing for around three months (March to May), when the young Bhopal based businessman was unable to fetch the promised returns on investment of Rs 97 lakh-plus, he reported the matter to the MP Police’s Cyber Cell HQ, which formed a special investigation team (SIT) SP Gurukaran Singh and ASP Vaibhav Srivastava.

The SIT, which also comprised ASP Richa Jain, inspector Abhishek Sonekar, and three sub-inspectors – Vinay Narvaria, Ashwini Chaudhary, and Anuj Samadhia spent hundreds of hours in tracking the money trail and understanding the modus operandi of the first of its kind international cyber fraud syndicate.

“Subsequent probe revealed that the five current accounts of the shell firms/companies in which the Bhopal businessman had made his investments, actually had received around Rs 30 to Rs 35 crores in last two-three months. The subsequent probe took MP’s cybercops to cryptocurrency traders, female company secretary and a chartered accountant in various parts of India, including Rajkot, Delhi and Gurgaon, who were crucial Indian links of the racket,” the ADG-Cyber Cell said.

Delving deeper into the racket revealed that the Indian cryptocurrency traders spread in the country were laundering the money deposited in these bank accounts (which actually were operated by them) through cryptocurrency exchanges (including Indian cryptocurrency exchange Wazirix and cryptocurrency exchange Binance in tax haven Caymon Islands) to actual beneficiaries/fraudsters based in Pakistan and China.

The shell companies and their bank accounts were created within a span of 6 to 12 hours by the Delhi-based woman company secretary and the Gurgaon-based chartered accountant for clients in Pakistan as well as a Chinese national, who had visited India a year ago.

Searches are on for six others including a Chinese national. Police have declared a bounty of Rs 10,000 each on any information leading to their arrest.

The MP Police are now working with central and external intelligence agencies to track the actual beneficiary of this racket operating from Pakistan. The agencies are also working to find out where the alleged fraud money is laundered from India to Pakistan and China via cryptocurrency exchanges, including the possibility of it being used to fund anti-India activities.

“Two more similar complaints of young businessmen from Bhopal and Indore having been trapped in a similar fashion and consequently having lost around Rs 75 lakh are being probed by the same SIT now,” Chaudhary said.

  • Two Army jawans held for spying for Pakistan’s ISI: Punjab Police

    By PTI
CHANDIGARH: Two Army jawans have been arrested for allegedly spying for Pakistan’s Inter-Services Intelligence (ISI), the Punjab Police said on Tuesday.

The accused have been identified as Sepoy Harpreet Singh (23), who was posted in Jammu and Kashmir’s Anantnag and belongs to 19 Rashtriya Rifles, and Sepoy Gurbhej Singh (23), who was working as a clerk in Kargil and belongs to 18 Sikh Light Infantry.

Director General of Police (DGP) Punjab Dinkar Gupta said both the accused had already shared pictures of over 900 classified documents — pertaining to defence of the country and national security — to a cross-border drug smuggler, Ranvir Singh, over a period of four months between February and May 2021, who had further passed them on to Pakistani Intelligence Officers.

Gupta said that the Jalandhar Rural Police, led by Senior Superintendent of Police (SSP) Naveen Singla, while investigating a Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances (NDPS) case, recovered confidential and secret documents related to the functioning and deployment of the Indian Army from Ranvir Singh, who was arrested with 70 g of heroin on May 24.

He said during interrogation, Ranvir Singh disclosed that he got these documents from Harpreet Singh, who was his friend, as they both belong to the same village.

“Ranvir motivated and lured Harpreet Singh with financial benefits for sharing defence-related classified documents, following which the latter induced his friend Gurbhej Singh into such anti-national spying activities,” Gupta alleged.

Since Gurbhej Singh was working as a clerk in 121 Infantry Brigade Headquarters in Kargil, he could get easy access to these classified documents containing both strategic and tactical information relating to the Indian Army, the DGP was quoted as saying in an official statement here.

The DGP said Ranvir Singh further used to send these classified documents to either the Pakistan ISI operatives directly or via one Gopi, who has been identified as the main drug smuggler from Dauke village in Amritsar having links with Pakistan-based drug-smuggling syndicates and ISI officials, who invariably work in tandem with each other.

Following Ranvir Singh’s disclosures, the police have also arrested Gopi, who has confessed to having transferred classified documents to Pakistan-based drug smugglers, one of whom has been identified as Kothar, and an alleged Pak ISI operative identified as Sikander in lieu of supply of heroin and financial benefits, the DGP said, adding that all the pictures of the classified documents were transmitted over encrypted apps.

According to preliminary investigations, the DGP said that Harpreet Singh, from Cheecha village in Amritsar, and Gurbhej Singh, a native of Punian village in Punjab’s Tarn Taran, got monetary inducements for sharing confidential information.

He said Ranvir Singh gave money to Harpreet Singh, who further used to transfer it to Gurbhej Singh’s account.

Harpreet Singh had joined the Army in 2017 while Gurbhej Singh had joined in 2015.

SSP Singla said that the Army authorities had handed over both the accused to the Jalandhar Rural Police and further investigations were being carried out to ascertain the involvement of any other accused persons.

  • Pakistan-based terror groups behind weapons, narcotics dropped by drones in Jammu and Kashmir: DGP

    By PTI
JAMMU: Asserting that Pakistan-based Lashkar-e-Taiba (LeT) and Jaish-e-Mohammad (JeM) outfits are behind the dropping of arms, IEDs and narcotics by drones in Jammu and Kashmir, Director General of Police Dilbag Singh said on Friday that the time has come to defeat and reject terrorism to usher in peace and development in the Union Territory.

He said counter-insurgency operations would be further speeded up to wipe out terrorism, while efforts are on to further strengthen security arrangements to counter the threat posed by the drones, especially in the aftermath of the recent attack on the Indian Air Force base in Jammu.

Talking to reporters after the attestation-cum-passing-out parade of the 27th Basic Recruitment Training Course (BRTC) in Kathua district, the DGP said LeT’s hand is suspected behind the twin drone strikes inside the IAF station, Jammu in the early hours of Sunday.

“The investigation [in the IAF bombing] is in progress. We have not reached any conclusive stage so as to say who is actually involved but now that we have past history of Lashkar using drones to drop weapons, narcotics on this side besides the ready-made Improvised Explosive Devices to be planted at various locations. So at this stage, I would only say that LeT hand is suspected and rest when we move further in the investigation we will be able to say further,” Singh said.

Referring to the arrest of a terrorist with 5.5 kgs of IED in Jammu, he said a module was busted which was planning to carry out an IED explosion at a crowded place to cause large number of casualties on the same day when the twin bombs were dropped on the air force station.

“The IED came and was sent from the LeT handler from that side [Pakistan]. The fellow who was to receive that IED has been arrested by police and is being interrogated. The IED was to be planted at a crowded place to cause a large number of casualties,” the police chief said, complimenting the security agencies and Jammu police for the successful operation of thwarting the attempt before the IED could be planted.

Before the attack in Jammu, Singh said over a dozen incidents of weapon droppings by LeT with the use of drones have taken place.

He said RDX was found used in the IED which was recovered.

“It was fabricated to be carried and dropped by a drone,” he said.

Describing drones as a major security threat, Singh said “the use of drones by anti-national elements, terrorists, to drop weapons and IEDs is a threat and we are taking counter steps (to defeat their designs).”

The DGP said Jammu and Kashmir has witnessed lot of death and destruction due to terrorism.

“My message to the youth is that there is enough bloodshed of innocents by terrorists and the time has come to reject and defeat terrorism on every front. Youth should be equal partners in peace, prosperity and development and should save themselves from such activities which are not beneficial to them, their families and the society as a whole,” he said.

About recruitment of local youth in terrorist ranks in the valley, he said the recruitment is taking place but it is much less than the earlier.

“We have been engaging the youth in a positive direction and it (the recruitment) is almost nil compared to previous years. In future, we believe it will drop further,” he said.

When asked about the rise in encounters between security forces and terrorists in the valley, the DGP quipped “more encounters will take place”.

“There are people who are enemies of peace and a threat to the lives of innocents. They are involved in acts of terror and linked to [terror] groups outside J&K and planning violence in different areas. They [terrorists] will be finished and so operations are being further intensified against them,” he said.

The DGP said the ceasefire between India and Pakistan is holding on the Line of Control and International border.

“There is lull on that count as there is no ceasefire violation reported as of now [after the February agreement between India and Pakistan]. However, the weapon dropping through drones from across the border is taking place at the behest of LeT and JeM, which are actually operating from Pakistan,” he said.

When queried on whether the drone used to bomb the IAF station had come from Pakistan or launched by someone in the vicinity of the base, he said the investigators suspect that the drone has come from across the border but the second aspect cannot be ruled out at this point of time.

The police chief said all the security agencies have got together after the drone strike and held a series of meetings to review the security arrangements of vital installations and places to ward off such types of attacks in future.

“Some additional measures have been taken which cannot be discussed in the media. Some measures have been taken and more measures are in the pipeline,” he said, adding “some new technology has also been deployed (to counter the drone threat).

  • Speed up release and repatriation of Indian civilian prisoners, India tells Pakistan

    By PTI
NEW DELHI: India on Thursday called on Pakistan to ensure early release and repatriation of Indian civilian prisoners and missing defence personnel languishing in Pakistani jails.

The two countries exchanged lists of civilian prisoners and fishermen in each other’s custody in line with the provisions of a 2008 agreement.

The Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) said India handed over a list of 271 Pakistani civilian prisoners and 74 fishermen who are in Indian custody.

Similarly, Pakistan shared a list of 51 civilian prisoners and 558 fishermen in its custody, who are Indians or are believed-to-be Indians, the MEA said.

“The government has called for early release and repatriation of civilian prisoners, missing Indian defence personnel and fishermen along with their boats, from Pakistan’s custody,” it said.

“In this context, Pakistan was asked to expedite the release and repatriation of 1 Indian civilian prisoner and 295 Indian fishermen to India whose nationality has been confirmed and conveyed to Pakistan,” the MEA said in a statement.

In addition, Pakistan has been asked to provide immediate consular access to 194 fishermen and 17 civilian prisoners who are in Pakistan’s custody and are believed to be Indians, it added.

“The government also requested Pakistan to expedite the grant of visas to the members of the medical experts’ team and facilitate their visit to Pakistan to assess the mental condition of believed-to-be Indian prisoners of unsound mind, lodged in different jails of Pakistan,” the MEA said.

“It was also proposed to organise an early visit of the Joint Judicial Committee to Pakistan,” it said.

The MEA said India remains committed to addressing, on priority, all humanitarian matters, including those pertaining to prisoners and fishermen in each other’s custody.

In this context, the MEA said India has also urged Pakistan to expedite necessary action at its end to confirm the nationality status of 78 Pakistani prisoners, including fishermen, whose repatriation is pending for want of confirmation of nationality by Islamabad.

  • Terrorists working with Pakistan Army can become ‘lose cannons’ to escalate situation, warns CDS Gen Bipin Rawat

    By ANI
NEW DELHI: Asking armed forces to be on guard along borders with both China and Pakistan, Chief of Defence Staff General Bipin Rawat has said that terrorists working with the Pakistan Army can go rogue and it could escalate the situation with India.

Speaking to ANI on Tuesday, the Chief of Defence Staff also stated that while there was a need to be alert on both the borders, the primary front for the defence forces at the moment was the Northern border where India and China have been locked in a military standoff since last year.

“I would say both the fronts are a priority for us. While we have to prepared at the northern fronts especially after the situation that evolved in 2020, We can’t lower our guard but on the western front.”

“I have always maintained that there are terrorists who operate with the Pakistani armed forces, some of these terrorists can actually become loose cannon and create a situation which could lead to an escalation. So we have to be fully prepared on our western fronts also. So I would say that we should be prepared for both the fronts but our primary front remains the northern front,” Gen Rawat said when asked who is the main adversary for the Indian defence forces between China and Pakistan.

Asked about the deployment of two-strike corps on the China front in last one year, he said this was about reorientation of the forces which have been getting dual tasks for several years now and they were not new raisings.

On Pakistan’s support for terror activities inside India, the CDS said while the ceasefire is holding along Line of Control (LoC) so far, the internal peace process is being disrupted by infiltration of weapons and drugs, using drones.

Gen Rawat said if the internal peace process is disrupted by the smuggling of drugs and weapons, then “we can’t really say that the ceasefire is holding”.

“Ceasefire so far along the LoC is holding, which is a positive sign. At the same time, we are also witnessing infiltration of weapons and ammunition, using drones. It doesn’t augur well for peace as these drugs and weapons are meant to disrupt the internal peace process,” he said.

“If the internal peace process is disrupted, then we can’t really say that the ceasefire is holding. The ceasefire doesn’t mean that you ceasefire along borders, but you at the same time create trouble in the hinterland. We would like a semblance of peace in the entire Jammu and Kashmir,” the CDS added.

Speaking on theaterisation of forces, General Rawat said that the process is going on well and it is making satisfactory progress.

“Amongst the three services, we have been able to resolve most of the issues. There is a better understanding that if the three services integrate, they can bring about jointness and carry out transformation. Then I think, we will ensure better efficiency and utilisation of our existing services. I think we’ll be better prepared for combat in the future,” he said.

Shedding light on the internal situation in Jammu and Kashmir, the CDS said he is “very confident” that the people of the Union Territory want peace.

“They have seen a lot of terrorism and insurgency over the years. People are now looking at peace returning, especially after the abrogation of Article 370. If this continues, the time will come when people themselves will shun violence and will not allow insurgency in the Valley because insurgency and terrorism can’t survive without the support of locals,” General Rawat said.

He further said that Army needs to identify the youth in the Valley who have been misled and guide them away from terrorism.

“Some of the youth who have been misled, I think we need to identify them and see how best we can converse with them and explain to them that terrorism is not the way forward, but peace and tranquillity is the way forward,” CDS Rawat added.
