  • TMC MP Nusrat Jahan loses temper during roadshow, stokes controversy

    By PTI
KOLKATA: Actor and TMC MP Nusrat Jahan has courted controversy after she apparently lost cool and abandoned a roadshow midway in North 24 Parganas district, contending that she does not take part in any rally that lasts over an hour, even if it is in support of Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee.

Jahan, who was recently campaigning for TMC candidate Narayan Goswami at Guma in Ashoknagar segment, suddenly refused to take part in the roadshow notwithstanding party workers’ fervent pleas to stay back.

“I am participating in the roadshow for more than an hour, (which) I don’t do even for the chief minister; Are you joking?” the Basirhat MP could be heard telling TMC supporters.

Goswami later said that Jahan had suffered a sprain due to which she could not continue to be a part of the roadshow.

Looking to seize the initiative, opposition BJP posted a video of the episode on Twitter with the hashtag ‘#MamataLosingNandigram’.

Banerjee is locked in a fierce contest with her protege-turned-adversary and BJP candidate Suvendu Adhikari in Nandigram in Purba Medinipur district, which will go to polls in the second phase on April 1.

  • Nusrat Jahan video: Trinamool candidate claims actor-politician was injured in accident; Opposition cries foul

    By ANI
NORTH 24 PARGANAS: After a video went viral claiming to feature Trinamool Congress (TMC) MP Nusrat Jahan losing her temper at a rally, TMC candidate Narayan Goswami on Monday claimed that she was injured after an ‘accident’ during the campaign rallies.

The video shows the TMC MP was agitated during a campaign. In the video shared through West Bengal BJP Twitter handle a woman can be heard saying: “I have been at the rally for over an hour. I don’t do this even for the Chief Minister. Are you kidding?”

Speaking to ANI, Goswami said: “Our rally took place at 4 pm. Thousands of people had arrived. The rally went on for 1.5 hours, during which Nusrat spent time with me, interacted with people and waved hands.”

“At almost 6 pm, we had reached our final point. There was a bumper on the road. The driver was not accustomed to drive on those roads. He had pulled the brake suddenly. Nusrat and I were injured, but due to my bulky physique, I was not hurt much. However, since she had a thin physique, she was hurt. She sat down and tears came out of her eyes. Seeing her pain, I thought she had to be taken to a hospital or nursing home for treatment,” he added.

Goswami further said he had doubts about the video, highlighting that technology could be a major cause for concern. Dismissing it as a possible conspiracy, he said all angles can be ascertained after Nusrat herself reacts on the matter.

Meanwhile, the opposition parties have slammed Nursat’s alleged misdemeanour.

“It is good that actresses enter in a field to serve people, but they also tend to bring the acting with them, which was displayed. We have never seen Nusrat at the side of the people during COVID-19 or the cyclone Amphan. This incident means that her internal mindset has been exposed,” said Bharatiya Janata Party’s (BJP) Tanuja Chakraborty.

Replying to a query on whether technology was involved in making the video, the BJP member said the TMC had nothing to say after being exposed, so they are trying to cover up their mistakes.

Tapas Chakraborty from the Communist Party of India (Marxist), slammed Nusrat, saying she has insulted the Chief Minister and the parliamentary culture.

“Firstly, if she is an MP under the Chief Minister, she has insulted the CM and the parliamentary culture. It proves that TMC buys celebrities with money, her money has dried up, that is why this happened,” he told media.

He also accused Goswami of ‘speaking lies’.

Nusrat’s video went viral as an intense triangular fight for power has begun in West Bengal Assembly polls, gripping the state in election fever.

The first phase of the West Bengal Assembly elections concluded with an estimated 79.79 per cent voter turnout on Saturday, including 30 seats covering all constituencies from Purulia and Jhargram and segments from Bankura, Purba and Paschim Medinipur.

  • Bengal polls: Actor Yash Dasgupta, six others from Tollywood join BJP

    By Express News Service
KOLKATA: The BJP’s Bengal’s chapter has inducted seven popular Bengali film and serial actors on Wednesday saying that the party made inroads into the culture and entertainment circle of the state.

The BJP inducted Yash Dasgupta, the actor who is also known as TMC MP Nusrat Jahan’s close friend, along with six others. Earlier, the party had welcomed five other actors from Bengal’s film industry, popularly known as Tollywood.

Sources in the BJP said the move to bring actors to the party fold was initiated to counter TMC’s strategy which proved successful in previous elections.

In the 2011 Assembly elections, the TMC made the first move by fielding actress Debasree Roy who defeated veteran CPI(M) contender Kanti Ganguly in South 24-Parganas’ Raidighi constituency. In the 2014 Lok Sabha poll, the party fielded five actors — Moon Moon Sen, Dipak Adhikari, Sandhya Roy, Shatabdi Roy, and Tapas Pal — who all won from their constituencies. Even in the 2019 general elections, the TMC sent its two elected actors — Mimi Chakrabarty and Nusrat Jahan — to the Lower House of Parliament.

“We will pay the TMC back in their own coin in the upcoming election. In some of the seats, the TMC was also surprised after the actors defeated their heavyweight contestants. We are also going to field the actors in the upcoming elections against TMC’s candidates,” said a BJP leader.

In 2014, Moon Moon Sen had defeated nine-time CPI(MP) Basudeb Acharia in Bankura Constituency. The CPI’s heavyweight candidate Prabodh Panda failed to retain his Midnapore seat in the same year as TMC’s strategy of fielding actress Sandhya proved successful.

Asked whether the newly-inducted actors will contest in the Assembly elections, BJP’s national general secretary and West Bengal observer Kailash Vijayvargiya said it would depend on them. “The BJP is aimed at a change in Bengal and the bunch of actors joined the party to be part of the initiative,” said Vijayvargiya.

The saffron camp has been trying to make inroads in Bengal’s culture clan, where the ruling party has already made deep penetration. Union Home minister Amit Shah had visited vocalist Ajay Chakrabarty’s residence last year and Vijayvargiya Ustad Rashid Khan to woo the support of the particular sets of electorates.
