    By Express News Service

BHUBANESWAR: Congress workers on Sunday hurled eggs at Union Minister of State for Home Ajay Mishra’s vehicle and showed black flags near Biju Patnaik International airport square over his son’s alleged involvement in the Lakhimpur Kheri violence.

The Union Minister arrived to attend a programme here. “We had earlier warned him against visiting Odisha. The Chhatra Congress opposed his visit by hurling eggs. We will also oppose his presence in other places during his visit to the state,” president of the state unit of the National Student Union of India (NSUI) Yasir Nawaj said.

Nawaj demanded resignation of the Union Minister as his son is allegedly involved in an incident in which farmers were mowed down. The Union Minister’s son Ashish Mishra has been named in an FIR following allegations that he was in one of the vehicles that mowed down four farmers protesting the new farm laws in Lakhimpur Kheri on October 3.

  • Seven NSUI workers arrested for creating ruckus at BJP office in Jaipur

    By PTI

JAIPUR: Seven workers of the Congress-affiliated NSUI were arrested on Friday for allegedly creating a ruckus at the BJP office here to protest Union Minister S P Singh Baghel’s controversial remarks against Rajasthan Chief Minister Ashok Gehlot, according to police.

Earlier, the National Students’ Union of India had planned to hold a protest and burn an effigy of Baghel at the gate of University of Rajasthan at JLN Marg.

However, the plan was changed and the protest was moved to Rajapark area, where the BJP’s office is located, sources in the student group said.

Addressing a public meeting on Wednesday in Udaipur’s Vallabhnagar assembly constituency, where a bypoll is scheduled, Baghel called Gehlot a liar and went on to question the parentage of those who do not stick to their words.

The Union minister of state for law and justice also said that Gehlot was born on the day when a thousand liars had died.

NSUI workers entered the BJP office and created a ruckus.

After Jaipur BJP president Raghav Sharma informed the police about the incident, police personnel rushed to the spot and caught seven people, officials said.

They were taken to Jawahar Nagar police station and placed under arrest under Section 151 (arrest to prevent the commission of cognisable offences) of the Criminal Procedure Code, Inspector Panna Lal said.

Sharma alleged that groups of NSUI workers barged into the BJP office when a meeting of party workers was underway.

    They also manhandled BJP workers.

“If they wanted to hold a protest, then they should have done it in a democratic manner and at a proper place. They not only trespassed but also manhandled our workers who were at the party office to attend a meeting,” he said.

Baghel’s remarks drew a sharp reaction from the Congress, which said that indecency has no place in a democracy and civilised society.

The party has also demanded an apology from Baghel for his “undignified” comments.

  • ‘Toolkit’ issue: NSUI files FIR against BJP leaders Raman Singh, Sambit Patra in Raipur

    By PTI
NEW DELHI: The Congress’ students wing, NSUI on Wednesday lodged an FIR here against former Chhattisgarh chief minister Raman Singh and BJP spokesperson Sambit Patra over the ‘toolkit issue’ for allegedly “forging” the letterhead of AICC Research Department and printing “false and fabricated” content.

The BJP had hit out at the Congress on Tuesday over an alleged toolkit of the opposition party, saying it wants to tarnish the image of the country and Prime Minister Narendra Modi by calling the new strain of the coronavirus the “India strain” or the “Modi strain”.

The Congress had accused the BJP of propagating a “fake toolkit” to defame it.

The case for `spreading fake news’ and “promoting enmity between classes’ was filed at Civil Lines police station on the complaint of Akash Sharma, state chief of the National Students Union of India.

Sharma alleged that BJP leaders circulated fabricated content using a fake letterhead.

The purpose of spreading this fake content was to divert the attention from the Modi Government’s mammoth failure to help people during the coronavirus pandemic, alleged Sharma.

The case was registered under IPC sections 469 (forgery for purpose of harming reputation), 504 (intentional insult with intent to provoke breach of the peace), 505(1)(b) (circulating rumour or report with intent to cause fear or alarm).

The opposition BJP in the state said the Congress’s attempt to save its face by registering an FIR will not work.

Senior BJP MLA Brijmohan Agrawal said the Congress had allegedly created a toolkit to defame the prime minister and the country.

When it was exposed, it was trying to save its face by lodging FIRs, he said.

  • Mahatma Gandhi Kashi Vidyapeeth elections: NSUI wins two seats, ABVP none

    By Express News Service
LUCKNOW: The National Students Union of India (NSUI) won two important seats in the Mahatma Gandhi Kashi Vidyapeeth elections. Their candidates won the vice-president and general-secretary posts.

The president’s post went to the candidate from Samajwadi Chhatra Sabha, the student wing of SP. ABVP, the students’ body of BJP, did not win any major seat.

While Vimlesh Yadav won the contest for the president’s post, Sandeep Pal was elected vice-president and Prafulla Pandey the general-secretary.

Two candidates from their students’ wing emerging victorious in a state run by BJP and in the constituency of PM Modi should be a shot in the arm for Congress.

Also significant is ABVP’s failure to win an important post.

“Students have supported NSUI by defying ABVP hooliganism. We will win all positions in the next elections,” said Akhilesh Yadav, of the UP East unit of NSUI.

  • Toolkit row: NSUI protests against environment activist Disha Ravi’s arrest

    By PTI
NEW DELHI: The National Students’ Union of India (NSUI) staged an agitation here on Wednesday against the arrest of environment activist Disha Ravi and alleged that the government is “flirting with fascistic techniques” to quell democratic protests in the country.

The members of the students’ wing of the Congress raised slogans against the BJP-led Centre and the Delhi Police for the “authoritarian crackdown on activists and supporters of the farmers’ agitation”.

NSUI president Neeraj Kundan alleged that the Bengaluru-based climate activist was arrested and brought to Delhi without a transit warrant.

“This government flirting with fascistic techniques of quelling democratic protests is nothing new. By waging a war against the students and youth of India, (Prime Minister) Narendra Modi’s authoritarian face has once again come out.”

“Only four sedition cases out of the 191 filed after this government came to power have resulted in convictions. The government uses tough laws and misuses them to silence all dissenting voices,” he said in a statement.

Ravi was arrested from Bengaluru on Saturday by the Delhi Police for allegedly creating and sharing a toolkit in support of the farmers’ agitation against the Centre’s new agriculture laws.

The Delhi Police had said on Monday that Ravi, along with Mumbai-based lawyer Nikita Jacob and Pune-based engineer Shantanu Muluk, created the toolkit that was shared with others to tarnish India’s image and collaborated with pro-Khalistani elements.

The NSUI said the government has “ignored the true essence of democracy” and its “Hitlership attitude” has ruined the country’s image, adding that it should look into the matters of Kapil Mishra and Anurag Thakur, who had allegedly incited violence in Delhi last year.

“We recommend the government to put these people behind the bars, instead of locking those who are supporting the farmers’ protest,” it said.

  • Ram temple fund drive to ‘expose’ RSS: Congress’ student wing rejects ‘soft Hindutva’ angle

    Express News Service
JAIPUR: Caught in a row over its donation drive for the proposed Ram temple in Ayodhya, the Congress’ student wing NSUI has sought to reject ‘soft Hindutva,’ saying its campaign would “expose” RSS affiliates.

The NSUI in Rajasthan has launched a fortnight-long drive — Re 1 Ram Ke Naam — to collect donations for the Ayodhya temple. The special drive would seek a token one rupee from each student in schools, colleges and universities across the state.

Critics have termed the drive as a ‘soft saffron’ approach to win Hindu votes. The NSUI, however, claimed it was meant to send a message that “God needs devotion, not money”.

The NSUI sought to clarify that its aim was to tell the people that Lord Ram belongs to everyone and that people of all religions have equal faith in the Hindu god.

“We want to expose the way people are being looted by groups affiliated to the BJP and RSS. They are pressuring the public to donate money in the name of Lord Ram. Our campaign is meant to tell the people that God doesn’t need money but needs devotion. If you donate one rupee out of devotion, it is as much as those donating crores,” said NSUI Rajasthan chief Abhishek Choudhary.

He charged RSS groups with looting Rs 14,000 crore from people in the name of bricks for the temple between 1989 and 2000.

“They continue to collect funds in the same fashion,” said Choudhary.

“They never gave any account of how those funds were used to promote their political agenda. They have done nothing but divide people in the name of Ram. But we want to say that Lord Ram is not their monopoly; he belongs to all 135 crore people of the country,” he said.

The Ram Janmabhoomi Teerth Kshetra Trust, responsible for building Ram Temple, is conducting a nationwide fundraising campaign since January 14 for the construction of a grand Ram temple estimated to cost around Rs 1,100 crore. RSS-affiliates are collecting funds.

They say all funds are being collected through receipt books and every rupee will be well accounted for. RSS leader (prant pracharak) in Jaipur, Dr. Shailendra said, “Our aim is not to collect big funds but to connect every citizen with construction of the temple. We have coupons of `10 and people can pay digitally too,” he said.
