  • BJP expels hooch tragedy accused from party; NSA to be invoked against five arrested

    By PTI
ALIGARH: The BJP on Monday expelled Rishi Sharma, the alleged kingpin in the hooch tragedy case, from the party.

District president of BJP Rishipal Pal Singh has cancelled Rishi Sharma’s primary membership, a party press release said.

Aligarh Police has started the process of charging all the five main accused including Sharma, who was arrested on Sunday, under the stringent National Security Act and the Gangster Act, Senior Superintendent of Police Kalanidhi Naithani said.

The accused are being interrogated and are expected to reveal the entire network of the liquor mafia, police sources said.

They said Rishi Sharma was in disguise and was hiding among a group of sadhus at an ashram at Garhmukteshwar near Hapur to evade the police.

Police had managed to trace his whereabouts from the video footage of one of his close associates with whom he was last seen when the news of the liquor tragedy, which has claimed at least 35 lives, started trickling on the night of May 27.

During the past week, police raided the premises of several of Sharma’s associates in different states including Himachal Pradesh.

After they traced him to Garhmukteshwar Ashram on Saturday evening, a police party rushed there only to discover that he had escaped.

With the help of some informers, he was tracked down at the Aligarh-Bulandshahr border where he was ultimately nabbed after a manhunt lasting nine days.

  • NSA Ajit Doval commissions Coast Guard’s offshore patrol vessel Sajag

    By PTI
NEW DELHI: National Security Advisor (NSA) Ajit Doval on Saturday virtually commissioned offshore patrol vessel Sajag that has been built by Goa Shipyard Limited for the Indian Coast Guard (ICG), an official statement noted.

In his speech at the event, Doval lauded the ICG for its support to coastal population, undertaking rescue operations during cyclones, marine pollution response, and anti-narcotics operations.

“He (Doval) said the ICG has contributed significantly towards saving precious lives at sea in the recent disaster in Mumbai High,” the Indian Coast Guard’s statement noted.

P305 and Varprada — both support vessels working for the state-run ONGC’s offshore oilfields near Mumbai — sank due to Cyclone Tauktae which made landfall on Gujarat coast on May 17.

While 188 people were rescued by the Indian Navy and the ICG, 86 people died.

Doval commended Goa Shipyard for indigenously developing ships for the Indian Navy and the ICG on time with state-of-the-art machinery and latest technology.

He said the ICG plays an important role in supporting the neighbouring countries in the Indian Ocean region.

The ICG has a total 160 ships and 62 aircraft in its fleet.

  • PPE kit reuse video: Invoke NSA, Digvijaya Singh tells Madhya Pradesh CM Shivraj Singh Chouhan

    By PTI
BHOPAL: Senior Congress leader Digvijaya Singh on Friday said those involved in the washing and packing of used PPE kits for resale in Satna district in Madhya Pradesh must be charged under the stringent National Security Act.

Singh, citing media reports on the issue, in a letter to Chief Minister Shivraj Singh Chouhan, said this was a “highly inhuman act” and was akin to “playing with the lives of others”.

“Some news reports are stating that in Satna district’s Badkhera-based Indowater Biowaste Disposal Plant, PPE kits and gloves are being separated from the bio-medical waste arrived in the unit for safe disposal, and repacked after washing for selling them in the market,” he said in the letter.

“It is surprising to know that this act was going on in the Badkhera unit for nearly a year and the government is not aware of it. It might be a very big scam,” Singh added, and asked Chouhan to book those involved in it under the NSA and ensure such stock was traced and destroyed.

Meanwhile, Satna district Sub Divisional Magistrate (SDM) Rajesh Shahi told reporters the collector had ordered a probe after taking cognisance of the video showing PPE kits being readied for reuse in a unit in Badkhera.

Pollution control board officials are carrying out the probe and action will be taken as per their report, Shahi added.

These 75 persons have already been sent to jails by the district collectors concerned, he said.

They were arrested under the NSA as well as the Prevention of Black-marketing and Maintenance of Supplies of Essential Commodities Act, 1980, he said.

  • Man charged under NSA for kidnap-murder of boy in Uttar Pradesh

    By PTI
BAHRAICH: The authorities have slapped charges under the stringent National Security Act on a man for allegedly kidnapping a 12-year-old boy for ransom and subsequently killing him in Bahraich district in Uttar Pradesh last year, police said on Sunday.

The district administration had invoked charges under the NSA against Hasan Mohammad in February, the police said.

Under the NSA, one can be detained without a charge for up to 12 months if the authorities are satisfied that the person is a threat to national security or law and order.

According to Additional Superintendent of Police (Rural) Ashok Kumar, accused Hasan Mohammad, his son Kaleem and four other family members had abducted the 12-year-old boy on October 29 last year when he was going to coaching classes.

They had demanded a ransom of Rs 30 lakh from the family of the boy, a resident of Majhauli village in the Matera police station area.

The accused later killed the boy and threw his body in a canal.

On a complaint lodged by the boy’s father, a case was registered against Hasan, his son Kaleem and four other family members, including three women.

Police said the boy was kidnapped and killed days after his father had objected to Kaleem not undergoing quarantine as required under the coronavirus guidelines following his return from Mumbai where he used to run a food stall.

Authorities sent Kaleem to quarantine after a complaint was received from the boy’s father which angered him and his family, the police said.

  • NSA slapped on man held for spitting on dough while making rotis in UP

    By Express News Service
LUCKNOW: The Uttar Pradesh government has invoked the National Security Act (NSA) against cook Naushad, who was arrested for spitting on the dough while making rotis at a wedding function in the Meerut district last month.

The process of NSA was completed by the police on Thursday and the file was sent to DM for approval on Thursday.

Naushad was arrested after a video clip showing his disgusting and unhygienic act went viral on social media. The video, shot by one of the guests at the wedding at Aroma Garden of Lishari Gate in Meerut, caught Naushad spitting on the rotis before putting them in the tandoor for the dinner at a party on February 16.

The guest, who had filmed Naushad, shared the video with other guests at the party and they left the function without having food.

Later, social activist Sachin Sirohi, associated with Hindu Jagran Manch, and his accomplices staged a protest at Lala Lajpat Rai Medical College Police Station. This was followed by the registration of a case against Naushad under the Epidemic Act and relevant sections of IPC on February 19, and Naushad was arrested and sent to jail.

During the investigation, the police found the charges of spitting in the dough to be true.

Recently, when Naushad was produced in the local court for a hearing on his bail application, a group of irate lawyers and the common public thrashed him. He was also beaten up when he came out of the court.

“The NSA was slapped against him as his release from the jail might create law and order problems in the city,” said Meerut SSP Ajay Sahni.

Meanwhile, a similar case was reported from Ghaziabad where a cook was caught on camera spitting on the dough while making rotis. The Ghaziabad Police are also in the process of invoking the NSA against the arrested cook.
