  • Election Commission issues notification for first phase of Lok Sabha elections

    The Election Commission of India on Wednesday issued the notification for the first phase of the Lok Sabha elections 2024 to be conducted on April 19.

    In the notification, the ECI informed that March 28 will be the last date for filing nominations for Bihar and March 27 for Arunachal Pradesh, Assam, Chhattisgarh, Madhya Pradesh, Maharashtra, Manipur, Meghalaya, Mizoram, Nagaland, Rajasthan, Sikkim, Tamil Nadu, Tripura, Uttar Pradesh, Uttarakhand, West Bengal, Andaman and Nicobar Islands, Jammu and Kashmir, Lakshadweep and Puducherry.

    “March 30 will be the date for scrutiny of nominations for Bihar and March 28 for others,” the notification said.According to the ECI’s notification, April 2 will be the last date for withdrawal of candidatures for Bihar and March 30 for Arunachal Pradesh, Assam, Chhattisgarh, Madhya Pradesh, Maharashtra, Manipur, Meghalaya, Mizoram, Nagaland, Rajasthan, Sikkim, Tamil Nadu, Tripura, Uttar Pradesh, Uttarakhand, West Bengal, Andaman and Nicobar Islands, Jammu and Kashmir, Lakshadweep and Puducherry;

    “June 6, the date before which the election shall be completed in all the above-mentioned parliamentary constituencies,” the notification read.

    Elections will be held in 102 Lok Sabha seats in 17 States and Four Union Territories in this phase.39 seats in Tamil Nadu, 12 in Rajasthan, 8 in Uttar Pradesh, and 6 in Madhya Pradesh will go to polls in the first phase.Along with them, five seats in Uttarakhand, Assam and Maharashtra, four seats in Bihar, three in West Bengal, two in Arunachal Pradesh, Manipur, Meghalaya and one seat in Chhattisgarh, Mizoram, Nagaland, Sikkim, Tripura, Andaman and Nicobar Islands, Jammu and Kashmir, Lakshadweep and Puducherry will also go to polls on April 19.

    The Election Commission on March 16, announced the schedule for the 2024 Lok Sabha elections.

    The polling will be conducted in seven phases across the nation from April 19 to June 1. The counting of votes will be on June 4.

  • India extends suspension of international flights till 31 December

    The Indian government on Thursday extended the suspension of scheduled international commercial passenger services till December 31 in view of the coronavirus pandemic.

    The Directorate General of Civil Aviation (DGCA), in a notification ‘Travel and Visa restrictions related to COVID-19’, said, “In partial modification of circular dated 26-06-2020, the competent authority has further extended the validity of circular issued on the subject cited above regarding Scheduled International commercial passenger services to/from India till 2359 hrs 1ST of 31St December, 2020.”


    “This restriction shall not apply to international all-cargo operations and flights specifically approved by the DGCA,” the order stated. The aviation regulator further clarified that international scheduled flights may be allowed on selected routes by the “competent authority on case to case basis”.

    Earlier this month, the DGCA had extended the ban on scheduled international passenger flights till November 30.

    India has entered into air bubble arrangements with multiple countries even though regular international flights remain banned owing to the COVID-19 pandemic. Under an air bubble pact between two countries, special international passenger flights can be operated by their airlines into each other’s territories.

    Scheduled international flights have been suspended in India since March 23 due to the coronavirus outbreak. However, special international passenger flights have been operating in India under the Vande Bharat Mission since May and under bilateral air bubble arrangements formed between India and other countries since July.

  • UP Govt Issues Advisory Urging All To ‘celebrate At Home’ In Wake Of COVID

    In the wake of the COVID-19 pandemic, the Uttar Pradesh government on Wednesday issued advisory for the festival of Chhath Puja. The government in its latest order urged people to perform festival rituals at their homes or near their homes. In the notification, the state government also directed the local administration to make necessary arrangements at the traditional spots near rivers and ponds. 

    Seeking cooperation from the devotees, the UP government appealed people to follow all COVID-19 protocols including maintaining social distancing and wearing face masks. Highlighting the changes in the arrangements, the government asked the local administration to ensure hygiene and cleanliness near river bodies and ghats. The district administration have also been asked to arrange for changing rooms and toilets for women.

    In its advisory, the state government mentioned that ambulances will be stationed near ghats to ferry people in case of an emergency. Apart from this, the district officials have also been asked to ensure proper barricading near the water bodies. In order to monitor the movement of people, CCTV cameras will also be installed. The advisory also instructed the administration to arrange for drinking water and sanitization facilities as well.

    The World Health Organization (WHO) on Tuesday praised the Uttar Pradesh government for its COVID-19 management strategy by terming it as a ‘good example’ for other states to follow. WHO Country Representative Roderico Ofrin said, “The UP government’s strategic response to COVID-19 by stepping up contact tracing efforts is exemplary and can serve as a good example for other states.” WHO also appreciated the efforts made by CM Yogi Adityanath and his government for the management of COVID-19, especially in tracking high-risk contacts. 

    As the world continues to grapple with the Coronavirus pandemic, Uttar Pradesh so far has recorded over 5,14,270 positive COVID-19 cases, out of which, 4,84,692 have successfully been recovered while 7,412 have died. As per the latest updates from MoHFW, in the past 24 hours,1,420 new cases, 19 deaths and 1,838 recoveries have been reported. Currently, the total number of active cases in the state is 22,166. As per the latest updates from the Indian Council of Medical Research (ICMR), total samples tested up to November 17 are 12,74,80, 186. While samples tested on November 17 are 9,37,279.

    Notification regarding the monsoon session has been issued in the state assembly. The session will start from 25 August and will run till 28 August. There will be a total of 4 meetings in this session. Principal Secretary Chandrasekhar Gangarade released it on behalf of the Legislative Assembly. In view of the danger of corona infection, the work of social distancing, sanitization is being done in the Vidhan Sabha.

    In this session, the government’s dung procurement, paddy bonus, persimmon leaf payment, criminal cases in the state, death of cattle, Gauthan, corona can be discussed on the work being done by the government. The opposition is preparing to surround the government with these issues.
