  • Ana de Armas: There’s no need for female James Bond

LOS ANGELES: Actress Ana de Armas, who played mysterious Paloma in Daniel Craig’s final outing as 007 in ‘No Time to Die’, said she instead wants to see more substantial, deeper roles for women in the spy franchise. She told The Sun amid calls from some for Daniel’s Bond replacement to be of the opposite sex: “There’s no need for a female Bond. There shouldn’t be any need to steal someone else’s character, you know, to take over.”This is a novel, and it leads into this James Bond world and this fantasy of that universe where he’s at. What I would like is that the female roles in the Bond films, even though Bond will continue to be a man, are brought to life in a different way. That they’re given a more substantial part and recognition. That’s what I think is more interesting than flipping things.Fans have been calling for a film spin-off for de Armas’s 007 character Paloma, whose parting line in ‘No Tim to Die’ was: “Next time stay longer,” reports femalefirst.co.uk.Despite dating Tinder vice president Paul Boukadakis, 38, the actress added she has distanced herself from the online world by turning her back on Twitter and Instagram. She said: “I deleted Twitter years ago. I have barely been on Instagram for almost a year.” It makes it easier for her to avoid the selfies posted by her ex-boyfriend Ben Affleck, 49, and his new wife Jennifer Lopez, 52, when they got married at a low-key ceremony in Las Vegas on Saturday.Ana dated Affleck for a year after appearing with him in the thriller ‘Deep Water’, released this year. Three months after they split in January 2021, Ben struck up his old romance with Jennifer. Reports said Ana ended their relationship as she didn’t want to live in Los Angeles, calling it “a city that keeps you anxious”.

  • New Bond film smashes franchise takings record

    By AFP

LONDON: The new James Bond film, “No Time To Die”, broke the franchise record for opening-weekend takings, Universal Pictures said Tuesday, with Daniel Craig’s last outing as the eponymous hero netting £25 million ($34 million, 29 million euros).

The movie opened in Britain and Ireland on Thursday, and achieved Bond’s best-ever three-day domestic opening in its 60-year history.

It is already Britain’s biggest film release since the pandemic hit in early 2020, despite only being open for four days, sparking optimism of a revival for the beleaguered industry.

It has so far opened in 54 countries, including Germany, Spain, Brazil and Japan, grossing $121 million dollars, said Universal, making it the first Hollywood release to break $100 million without counting China among its opening markets.

The movie, which also stars Rami Malek, Lashana Lynch and Ana de Armas, launches in the United States on Friday.

Fans in Britain flocked to cinemas across the country over the weekend to catch the latest 007 adventure, 18 months later than planned, but to a host of positive reviews.

“It’s better than good. It’s magnificent,” The Times newspaper’s film critic Kevin Maher gushed, giving it a maximum five stars.

“Craig is a towering charismatic presence from opening frame to closing shot, and he bows out in terrific, soulful, style.”

However, the praise from critics was not universal and others disagreed about its length of two hours and 43 minutes.

Craig, 53, has played the suave secret agent in five movies, beginning with “Casino Royale” in 2006.

Asked how he felt about saying goodbye to the role, he said: “I’m good. I’m really good about it.”

As for who would be his successor, he simply quipped: “Not my problem.”

  • American singer Billie Eilish makes history after winning Grammy for theme song of unreleased ‘No Time To Die’

    By PTI
LOS ANGELES: Singer Billie Eilish and her brother Finneas won the best song written for visual media Grammy award for their James Bond theme from unreleased “No Time to Die” movie.

It was for the first time in the Grammys history that a track from an unreleased film won the award.

In the past, the song, titled “No Time to Die”, would have been disqualified, but the Grammy soundtrack committee tweaked its rules amid the coronavirus pandemic, which had a huge impact on movie release calender.

“No Time to Die”, the 25th film in the James Bond franchise, was initially suppose to arrive in theatres in April 2020, but was pushed several times amid the pandemic. The film is now slated to hit the theatres on October 8, 2021.

Eilish, the youngest musician to write a James Bond theme song, released “No Time to Die” track last year on February 13.

The singer-songwriter, who also performed during the 63rd annual show, accepted the award during the pre-show.

Other winners in the visual media category were filmmaker Taika Waititi for best compilation soundtrack for 2019’s black comedy “JoJo Rabbit” and Icelandic composer Hildur Guðnadottir for the “Joker” score.

Eilish was also nominated for song of the year, record of the year, and best pop solo performance for her track ‘Everything I Wanted’.

She and Finneas won their second consecutive record of the year Grammy beating out tracks by Doja Cat (‘Say So’), Dua Lipa (‘Don’t Start Now’), Post Malone (‘Circles’), DaBaby and Roddy Ricch (‘ROCKSTAR’), Black Pumas (‘Colors’), Beyonce (‘Black Parade’), and Megan Thee Stallion’s ‘Savage’ remix, also featuring Beyonce.

In her acceptance speech, Eilish said Megan deserved the award and praised the rapper for her work.

“This is really embarrassing for me. Megan, girl. I was gonna write a speech about how you deserve this but then I was like, ‘There’s no way they’re going to choose me.’ I was like, It’s hers.’

You deserve this. You had a year that I think is un-stoppable. “You are a queen, I want to cry thinking about how much I love you. You deserve everything in the world, I think about you constantly. You deserve it,” she said. The 2021 Grammy Awards were hosted by Trevor Noah.
