  • Netflix to rely on Microsoft for its ad-backed video service

    By Associated Press

SAN FRANCISCO: Netflix has picked Microsoft to help deliver the commercials in a cheaper version of its video streaming service expected to launch later this year with a pledge to minimize the intrusions into personal privacy that often accompany digital ads.

The alliance announced Wednesday marks a major step toward Netflix’s first foray into advertising after steadfastly refusing to include commercials in its video streaming service since its inception 15 years ago. Netflix announced it would abandon its resistance to ads three months ago after disclosing it had lost 200,000 subscribers during the first three months of the year amid stiffer competition and rising inflation that has pressured household budgets, causing management to realize the time had come for a less expensive option.

Netflix has warned it will likely report even larger subscriber losses for the April-June period, increasing the urgency to roll out a cheaper version of its service backed by ads to help reverse customer erosion. That decline has contributed to a 70% decline in its stock price so far this year, wiped out in about $190 billion in shareholder wealth and triggered hundreds of layoffs.

The Los Gatos, California, company is scheduled to release its April-June numbers on July 19, but still hasn’t specified when its ad-supported option will be available except it will roll out before 2023. Netflix’s announcement about the Microsoft partnership also omitted a crucial piece of information: the anticipated price of the ad-supported option.

“It’s very early days and we have much to work through,” Greg Peters, Netflix’s chief operating officer, said in a post that also highlighted Microsoft’s “strong privacy protections.”

Landing the ad deal with a video streaming service that boasts more than 220 million subscribers represents a major coup for Microsoft, which has been engaged in a long-running and often acrimonious battle for the past 20 years with Google, the dominant force in digital advertising.

“This deal gives Microsoft something its growing ad business has lacked — quality streaming video inventory that has potential to scale” said Insider Intelligence analyst Ross Benes.

Mikhail Parakhin, Microsoft’s president of web experiences, said the Redmond, Washington, company is “thrilled” with Netflix’s choice in a post that also underscored the company’s commitment to privacy.

While Microsoft still makes software that powers most of the world’s personal computers, Google has become increasingly powerful through its dominant search engine, ubiquitous Android software for smartphones and other popular digital services that last year generated more than $200 billion in ad revenue — far more than any other marketing network.

But Google ad sales depend heavily on the personal information that its mostly free services collect about their billions of worldwide users, a form of surveillance that Netflix evidently wants to avoid with the commercial interruptions in its video service to lessen the chances of alienating subscribers. Google also owns YouTube’s video site, which already competes against Netflix for people’s attention and will soon be an advertising rival, too.

Microsoft also may have had another factor working in its favour. Netflix Inc.’s co-founder and co-CEO, Reed Hastings, served on Microsoft Corp.’s board of directors from 2007 to 2012.

  • Netflix will finance Johnny Depp’s King Louis XV film, his comeback post-defamation trial

    By IANS

NEW DELHI: Streaming giant Netflix is helping finance Hollywood star Johnny Depp’s movie comeback following his much-publicised defamation trial against ex-wife and actress Amber Heard that he eventually won.

According to aceshowbiz.com, the 59-year-old will portray King Louis XV in the French-language film ‘La Favorite’, which was previously reported to be titled ‘Jeanne du Barry’. Netflix has acquired the rights to stream the film in France, people familiar with the deal tell Bloomberg.

The acquisition of the film’s rights will be used by the producers to help finance the production. Under the deal, the period piece will be hitting the streamer 15 months following its theatrical release. Netflix, however, does not have the rights to stream the movie in other territories and is not involved in the making of the picture.

Directed by Maiwenn Le Besco, ‘La Favorite’ will tell the story of Jeanne Becu, an impoverished seamstress who rises through the ranks of Louis XV’s court to become his official mistress. Le Besco also stars as Jeanne Becu. Though the real Louis XV ruled over France for nearly 59 years, he “died as an unpopular king…accused of corruption and debauchery,” Variety wrote in January.

Filming is scheduled to start later this summer across France and will last for about three months. The movie is expected to be ready for theatrical release in the country in 2023.

‘La Favorite’ will mark Depp’s first acting role since he won the defamation case.

‘The Pirates of the Caribbean’ star was awarded $10 million in compensatory damages and $350,000 in punitive damages after the jury found his ex-wife Heard guilty of defaming him. The same jury awarded $2 million to the ‘Aquaman’ actress who made similar claims against Depp.

Depp’s last film was ‘Minamata’, which was released in the U.S. late last year. In November 2020, he withdrew from ‘Fantastic Beasts: The Secrets of Dumbledore’, in which he was supposed to reprise his role as Grindelwald, and was replaced by Mads Mikkelsen after losing his UK libel case against The Sun.

  • Duffer Brothers announce ‘Stranger Things’ spin-off

    By PTI

LOS ANGELES:  “Stranger Things” creators Matt and Ross Duffer have announced a spin-off show to their blockbuster sci-fi series.

The filmmaker duo, popularly known as The Duffer Brothers, have launched their production company Upside Down Pictures, a press release stated. The company’s title is inspired by the alternate world of “Strange Things” called The Upside Down. They are set to work on five projects with Netflix as part of their overall deal with the streaming service.

The live-action “Stranger Things” spin-off series is based on an original idea by The Duffer Brothers, with Upside Down and Shawn Levy’s 21 Laps as the producers.

The four other projects include a stage play, set within the world and mythology of “Stranger Things”. It will be directed by filmmaker Stephen Daldry, who will also produce alongside Sonia Friedman and Netflix.

The Duffer Brothers are also working on a live-action TV version of the Japanese manga and anime series “Death Note”, which was previously adapted into a live-action film in 2017.

Besides, they are set to develop a series adaptation of Stephen King and Peter Straub’s novel “The Talisman” alongside Steven Spielberg’s Amblin Entertainment and Paramount Television, with Curtis Gwinn adapting the book for the screen.

Finally, the duo are producing an original series from Jeffrey Addiss and Will Matthews, the creators of the Netflix series “Dark Crystal: Age of Resistance”.

To be headed by Hilary Leavitt, the Upside Down banner will “aim to create the kind of stories that inspired the Duffers growing up – stories that take place at that beautiful crossroads where the ordinary meets the extraordinary, where big spectacle co-exists with intimate character work, where heart wins out over cynicism”.

“It didn’t take long into our first meeting with Hilary, where we bonded over films like Jaws, Home Alone, and Speed, to know we had found a kindred spirit.

Hilary’s passion for storytelling is perhaps matched only by her passion for the storytellers themselves, for whom she is fiercely protective.

“No wonder so many writers and directors are drawn to working with her. She is a rare talent indeed, and we feel extremely grateful to have her at our side as we build Upside Down Pictures,” they said in a statement.

Netflix CEO Ted Sarandos hailed Matt and Ross Duffer as exceptionally unique talents with “a vision so crisp and clear”.

“They are all about the details” it’s no accident that ‘Stranger Things’ has pierced the zeitgeist to become the epic pop culture phenomenon it is today. We’re excited to continue telling new stories with them as they grow Upside Down Pictures and to welcome Hilary as a creative partner,” he added.

Matt and Ross Duffer most recently came out with the fourth season of “Stranger Things”, which became the second Netflix series ever to cross the 1 billion hours viewed mark.
