Earlier on Thursday, Congress MP Rahul Gandhi launched a scathing attack on Prime Minister Modi and said he is ‘silent’ on the entire issue because he is “crippled” and he has “psychologically collapsed” post-elections and will struggle to run a government like this.

Rahul Gandhi further said that it seems PM Modi is not bothered about NEET and is instead more concerned regarding the election of the Speaker.”The silence (of government) is because the Prime Minister is crippled. Right now, the PM’s main agenda is the (election of) Speaker. He is not bothered about NEET or all these things. He is bothered about his government and Speaker. That is where his mind is,” Rahul Gandhi said at a press conference on Thursday.Speaking about the people who have been arrested from Bihar in the “paper leak” case, he said, “Regarding Bihar, we have said that there should be an inquiry and action should be taken against those who have leaked the paper.”

Rahul Gandhi also said that the Congress party will raise the issue in the Parliament.

Recently, Patna Police arrested several people including some candidates who had taken the NEET exam in recent days.

Meanwhile, Union Minister Dharmendra Pradhan said the government is working to further strengthen the National Testing Agency (NTA) by “reconsidering important things.” He also assured action against those responsible for the alleged irregularities in the conduct of the examinations.

Speaking to ANI, Pradhan said, “In a democracy, everyone has their views. It is our job to listen to everyone. Our responsibility is to run a process-driven government, it is our responsibility to speak the truth and accept truth. Few students have doubts about NTA (National Testing Agency) and we will have to accept this.”

“The government has decided to form a committee and experts will be part of that committee. All the important things will be reconsidered and the NTA will be strengthened further. Those who are responsible for it (discrepancies) will be held accountable,” he said.

The Education Minister earlier announced the formation of a high-level committee to probe into the issues pertaining to the functioning of NTA.

The NEET-UG 2024 exam was conducted on May 5 and the results were declared on June 4, ahead of its scheduled announcement date of June 14. Protests were held alleging irregularities and paper leaks as the results showed that as many as 67 students had topped the exam with a perfect score of 720.

The NEET-UG examination, conducted by the National Testing Agency (NTA), paves the way for admission to MBBS, BDS, AYUSH and other related courses in government and private institutions across the country.

  • NEET 2024 Latest News: Row Gets Murkier; Congress Demands Release Of Information |

The Neet 2024 result row has got even more murkier with more and more details coming out. While earlier six students from a single centre in Haryana got 720 out of 720 marks, it has also come to light that an exam centre in Godhra was managed by paying crores to the NTA coordinator. It has also come to light that in Bihar, the paper was leaked using the Telegram app and some arrests have been made in connection with the incident.

A police investigation into the Godhra NEET cheating scandal has uncovered transactions amounting to crores of rupees involving 12 students, their parents, and the accused individuals. The probe has revealed the extensive financial dealings orchestrated to facilitate cheating in the National Eligibility-cum-Entrance Test (NEET) for undergraduate medical admissions.

Among the implicated students, four deposited Rs 66 lakh into the bank account of Roy Overseas Company, owned by Parashuram Roy of Vadodara. Additionally, students issued cheques totalling Rs 2.82 crore to Tushar Bhatt and Parashuram Roy. The investigation also found that three students provided Bhatt and Roy with blank cheques, highlighting significant monetary transactions connected to the alleged NEET exam misconduct in Jalaram School, one of the exam centres in Godhra.

The Congress party has levelled serious allegations against the Gujarat, Bihar and Central governments. Congress leader Pawan Khera said the National Testing Agency (NTA) has tried its best to cover up the matter in the court by saying that grace marks were given to 1563 children due to time loss. “The NTA quoted a Supreme Court judgement which clearly says that engineering and medical do not come under this category. They cannot be given grace marks for time loss. Now think to what level this government can stoop to cover up this matter,” alleged Khera.

He further demanded that details of exam centres with certain criteria be made public. “The names of the examination centres of the students securing more than 580 marks should be released. 12th board marks should be matched with NEET toppers. Video recordings of those exam centres where there are candidates with higher marks than the average should also be released. A list of all those students should be released who changed their exam centres,” demanded Khera, while raising the issue of the Godhra and Bihar.

Education minister Dharmendra Pradhan has ruled out paper leak claims while the Supreme Court has already ordered a re-exam for 1,563 students who got grace marks. The NEET students are demanding the cancellation of the exam and re-exam for all aspirants. However, the government is yet to take a decision about cancelling the exam.

  • NEET Success Story: Meet Prerna Singh, Auto Driver’s Daughter Who Survived On Single Roti, Cracked NEET Exam With Score Of… |

New Delhi: The National Eligibility cum Entrance Test (NEET) stands as one of the country’s most challenging college entrance exams, serving as a prerequisite for those aspiring to pursue MBBS in India. However, the narrative of NEET aspirant Prerna Singh is undeniably inspirational.

Having achieved a remarkable score of 686 out of 720 in the NEET UG examination, Prerna Singh secured her admission to one of India’s top government medical colleges, a feat that brought immense pride to her family and paved the way for a brighter future.

Despite her outstanding performance in the medical entrance exam, Prerna Singh confronted her own set of adversities. Hailing from Kota, Rajasthan, the 20-year-old faced the sudden demise of her father, who was the sole breadwinner as an auto-rickshaw driver. This unfortunate event thrust the responsibility of providing for the family onto Prerna’s shoulders.

Compounding the challenges, Prerna and her mother were burdened with a Rs 27 lakh loan, a financial strain they had to navigate without a steady income. Struggling with limited resources, Prerna often studied on an empty stomach, sustaining herself with just one meal a day—consisting of a single roti and chutney.

Undeterred by these hardships, Prerna committed herself to 12 hours of daily study, thanks in part to financial support from relatives who lent her money for NEET coaching. Her mother, in the face of financial constraints, secured loans for her children’s education and grappled with an existing home loan.

The collective efforts of Prerna’s family, coupled with the academic achievements of her siblings, are poised to transform Prerna Singh into a doctor. Despite financial challenges and the loss of her father, Prerna’s commitment to education has positioned her to enroll in a government medical college, a notable achievement celebrated by her family.

The news of Prerna’s success in the NEET examination brought joy and elation to her family, as she is now on the path to join a premier medical institute in India, quite possibly an AIIMS branch.

  • NEET: SC asks Centre whether it would like to revisit Rs 8 lakh criteria for determining Economically Weaker Sections

    By PTI

NEW DELHI: The Supreme Court on Thursday asked the Centre whether it would like to revisit the limit of rupees eight lakh annual income fixed for determining the Economically Weaker Sections (EWS) category for reservation in NEET admissions for medical courses.

The top court clarified that it is not embarking into the policy domain but is only trying to ascertain whether constitutional principles have adhered or not. A bench of Justices DY Chandrachud, Vikram Nath, and BV Nagarathna was annoyed as no affidavits were filed by the Ministry of Social Justice and Empowerment and the Department of Personnel and Training (DOPT) and formulated questions to be answered by the Centre in a week.

The bench said, “Tell us if you want to revisit the criteria or not. If you want us to discharge our duties, then we are ready to do so. We are formulating questions which you need to answer them.”

It added, “We may stay the government notification fixing rupees eight lakh criteria for determining the EWS and you can keep filing the affidavits.”

The top court was hearing a batch of pleas challenging the Centre and Medical Counselling Committee (MCC) July 29 notice providing 27 per cent reservation for Other Backward Class (OBC) and 10 per cent for EWS category in the National Eligibility cum Entrance Test (NEET) admissions for medical courses.

The top court once again asked searching questions from Additional Solicitor General KM Nataraj, appearing for Centre, and asked whether any exercise was undertaken before fixing a limit of Rs 8 lakh annual income for determining the EWS category.

“Whether Major Gen (retd) SR Sinho commission report of 2010 was considered before ascertaining the criteria? The report of the commission has to be placed on record before the court,” the bench said.

Major Gen (retd) SR Sinho commission was constituted by the UPA government in 2010 and has recommended welfare measures for the EWS category.

Natarajan said that the commission’s report was one of the basis for determining the criteria but after that several deliberations were held and other factors were also taken into account.

“Fixing of criteria of Rs 8 lakh is a pure policy matter and the court should not interfere with it. It was decided after proper application of mind,” he said.

Natarajan submitted that the draft of the affidavit by concerned departments is ready and they will be filing it in a day or two.

The bench said that it is not going to tell the government as to what should be the limit whether it should be rupees four lakh or rupees six lakh because it is for the executive to decide but all it wants to know is what was the basis for fixing Rs 8 lakh as the limit.

“For determining creamy layer in Other Backward Classes (OBC) category the limit was fixed as Rs 8 lakh annual income and they were considered progressed class among OBCs and they were excluded from reservation benefits. Here, for the EWS category, the limit is the same Rs 8 lakh annual income but it was for inclusion in the reservation benefits,” the bench said.

It added, “You cannot just pick Rs 8 lakh out of the thin air and fix it as a criteria. There has to be some basis, some study. Tell us whether any demographic study or data was taken into account in fixing the limit. How do you arrive at this exact figure? Can the Supreme Court strike down the criteria, if no study was undertaken?” It asked the Centre to respond to a question that since the income limit of determining the creamy layer in OBC category and EWS is the same that is Rs 8 lakh, whether it would be arbitrary to provide a similar income limit for EWS and OBC.

The top court also asked whether rural and urban purchasing power was accounted for and on what basis the asset exception was arrived at and why the residential flat criteria do not differentiate between metropolitan and non-metropolitan areas.

The bench said that as per the explanation in the 103rd constitution amendment says that criteria for EWS will be notified by the state governments, then how can the Centre notify a uniform EWS criterion for the whole of the country.

The top court then formulated the question and asked the Union Ministry of Social Justice and Empowerment and DOPT to file their replies by October 28.

On October 7, the top court had posed searching questions to the Centre on its decision to fix a limit of rupees eight lakh annual income for determining the EWS category for reservation in NEET admissions.

The Centre had then said fixing a limit of Rs eight lakh annual income for the EWS category is a matter of policy based on the National Cost of Living Index.

On September 17, the top court has agreed to hear a batch of pleas of students against the July 29 notice providing 27 per cent reservation for OBC and 10 per cent for EWS category in 15 per cent UG and 50 per cent PG All India Quota seats (MBBS/BDS and MD/MS/MDS) with effect from the current academic session 2021-22.
