The decision follows Gazi Ashraf Hossain’s exit after two years as chief selector. Bashar, a natural successor in many eyes, now faces competition as BCB advertises two vacancies with applications due by March 8.

With eight years of selector experience under predecessors Faruk Ahmed and Minhajul Abedin—ending with the February 2024 reshuffle—Bashar is currently engaged in BCB’s game development initiatives.

‘I don’t know for sure if I’ll apply,’ Bashar told Cricbuzz. ‘Working with BCB, I must first understand my reasons before deciding.’

Nazmul Abedin, BCB cricket operations head, defended the transparent approach. ‘Our known candidates aren’t the only talented ones. We need to assess others to keep things impartial,’ he said.

The board seeks top talent and future prospects. ‘Ultimately, we choose the best, but this reveals hidden gems and interest levels. Two openings mean more chances,’ Abedin added.

This initiative supports BCB’s strategy to bolster selection frameworks at all levels. Ashraf’s recent one-month extension ensures stability during the transition.
