  • Navjot Singh Sidhu questions use of EVMs in polls, seeks voting through ballot papers

    CHANDIGARH: Congress MLA and former Punjab minister Navjot Singh Sidhu on Tuesday questioned the use of EVMs in the elections and said voting should be held through ballot papers. Speaking for the first time in the ongoing Budget session in the Assembly, Sidhu during the Zero Hour said countries like the USA have disapproved polling through electronic voting machines (EVMs).

    The Amritsar MLA said these countries had reasoned that any technology could be “manipulated” but not ballot papers. Sidhu spoke after Lok Insaaf Party MLA Simarjeet Singh Bains raised the issue in the House.

    Bains said that according to Article 328 of the Constitution, a state Assembly is empowered to decide whether it wants election through an EVM or ballot paper. Citing an example, Bains said the Maharashtra Assembly Speaker had asked the state government to bring a Bill for reintroducing ballot papers as a mode of conducting elections.

    To this, Speaker Rana KP Singh said he will get the matter examined. Backing Bains, Sidhu told the Speaker, “You do not allow elections through EVMs in Punjab, not even a single seat can be won by the central government.”

    “It is not an issue of political parties. It is an issue of democracy,” said Sidhu demanding a resolution over it. Former cricketer-turned-politician also slammed the Union government, accusing it of “politicisation of institutions”. “The institutions have been turned into puppets,” he alleged.

    Leader of Opposition and AAP legislator Harpal Singh Cheema also demanded a resolution, stating that the elections should not be held through EVMs.

  • Farm laws: Navjot Sidhu accuses Centre of violating Punjab govt’s right to legislate

    CHANDIGARH: Congress leader Navjot Singh on Thursday accused the central government of violating the Punjab government’s right to legislate by implementing the three farm laws.

    Addressing a press conference here, the cricketer-turned-politician said that the farm laws are a clear infringement by the central government on the state’s right to legislate.

    “The main subjects of the three acts are agriculture and market that are essentially state subjects as per the Seventh Schedule of the Constitution. However, the central government encroached its way into the legislation by misconstruing its authority on food items, which is a subject in the Concurrent List, as authority over the subject of agriculture. However, food items and agricultural products are distinct categories,” he added.

    He mentioned that the state has enough grounds to completely deny the implementation of these “black” laws in Punjab, adding, “I do not understand, why in this case, we are just amending the central laws and sending them back, when we know very well that all these amendments will not be implemented until either approved by the President of India or if the central laws are first withdrawn.”

    He said that Rajasthan and Punjab have passed amendment legislations for the farm laws but the Captain Amarinder Singh-led government need to take more affirmative actions and completely deny the implementation of the three “black” laws in Punjab.

    “By means of mere amendments, we are going to the constitutional heads who may not choose to help us, and maybe is not a good position to be in at this decisive critical juncture. Instead, why not use the democratic power given to us by three crores of Punjabis by honouring their aspirations? They stand by us. We must do more and take affirmative action and completely deny the implementation of the three unconstitutional black laws in Punjab.” Sidhu added.

    He further said that using the power to legislate and become game-changers.

    “We need to take further progressive steps from now on and help Punjab’s farmers who are looking towards us with high hopes,” said the Congress leader.

    Sidhu said there was a need to support farmers in creating storage facilities to counter the corporate onslaught by the Centre. “Once farmers had storage capacity, they would be in a position to negotiate the price of their crops. In this way, the farmers could be saved from the onslaught of the corporate.”

    He said the government was spending a hefty amount on the purchase of cereals.

    “Why cannot we give MSP on it? The Haryana government is procuring oilseeds and selling oil out of that. We too can do so. The farmers are ready for organic farming but at least someone should come forward to support them,” he said, adding that the state should also amend the cooperative laws and allow farmers to run the same and not the bureaucrats.

    The Congress leader demanded that MNREGA-like income support to all agricultural labour of Punjab should be given.

    “It will benefit not only the labour as an increment in their daily wages but also help the farmer as an agricultural labour subsidy and ease their financial burden. We should increase the minimum wages of labour, linking it to inflation and the government should directly pay the difference. 36 per cent of Punjabis are Dalits, owning only 2 per cent of the land, most of them work as labour, and let us support them,” he added.

    Concluding the press conference, he said that the central government has not solved such problems, as it itself is the problem.

    Farmers have been protesting on the different borders of the national capital since November 26 last year against the three newly enacted farm laws – Farmers’ Produce Trade and Commerce (Promotion and Facilitation) Act, 2020; the Farmers Empowerment and Protection) Agreement on Price Assurance and farm Services Act 2020 and the Essential Commodities (Amendment) Act, 2020.

    However, their implementation has been put on hold by the Supreme Court.

  • Former Punjab Minister Navjot Singh Sidhu meets Congress chief Sonia Gandhi at her residence in Delhi

    NEW DELHI: Former Punjab Minister Navjot Singh Sidhu on Monday met Congress president Sonia Gandhi at her residence here and it is learnt that they discussed considering an active role for him in the party, sources said.

    It is speculated that Sidhu, who has remained away from Punjab politics ever since he resigned from the state cabinet, is reconsidering taking up a ministerial berth.

    The cricketer-turned-politician had recently met Punjab Chief Minister Amarinder Singh over breakfast.

    Sidhu is considering his return to the Punjab cabinet but is likely to be given a ministry other than he held earlier, sources said.

    Sidhu had been the local bodies minister and also held the charge of tourism ministry in Punjab.

    Bringing Sidhu back into the party fold will help Congress put its house in order ahead of next Assembly elections slated in January 2022.

    All India Congress Committee general secretary for Punjab Harish Rawat and party general secretary K C Venugopal were also present at the meeting which lasted for around half an hour, sources said.

    Sidhu has been eyeing the post of Punjab Congress chief but Singh is not keen to hand over the party reins to him, sources said.

  • Accident should not be politicised: Sidhu; says wife attended to patients

    Punjab minister and local MLA Navjot Singh Sidhu said the mowing down of 61 Dussehra revellers by a train here was an accident and that nobody had done it intentionally.

    He, however, said there was a “big negligence” and asked his detractors not to do politics over the incident.

    “It was an unfortunate incident. I talked to few people who told me that some people were standing on the rail track and some were sitting on a stone near the track,” the minister told reporters.

    “When effigy of Ravana was lit, some people retreated back. Then the train came with a great speed and there was no horn and people did not come to know (about the approaching train) and it happened in a matter of just one or two seconds,” he said.

    Defending his wife Navjot Kaur Sidhu, who was accused of leaving the accident site without bothering about the victims, the state culture minister said she was attending to patients at the hospital when allegations were being levelled against her.

    “When I talked to my wife Navjot Kaur Sidhu Friday, she was in a hospital,” he said.

    “I fought elections from here because of my wife. She has been working here. Friday night, when accusations were being levelled against her, she was with patients. She called me up Friday. She came to know about the incident before reaching home. She then immediately reached here,” Sidhu said.

    Meanwhile, the Congress leader visited local hospitals and met the patients and their relatives Saturday morning.

    Sidhu said when he learnt about the accident, he was shocked. He added that he was away to Calicut for a function on Friday.

    Refusing to point fingers, the minister said, “Nobody has done it deliberately. However, there is a big negligence (behind this incident)…When I talk about negligence, some people did not even understand their responsibility”.

    “Nobody had any intention to do this. There was no motive,” he said, adding the incident was an irreparable loss.

    He also requested not to give the incident a “political shape”.

    “The question is that the accident should not be given political shape. It is an accident. Do not make false allegations and do politics on this issue,” Sidhu said.

    At least 61 people were killed and 72 injured Friday evening after a crowd of Dussehra revellers that had spilled onto railway tracks while watching burning of Ravana effigy was run over by a train near here, officials said.

    The train was coming from Jalandhar when the accident occurred at Joda Phatak near Amritsar, where at least 300 people were watching ‘Ravana dahan’ at a ground adjacent to the tracks.

    People shouted slogans against Navjot Kaur Sidhu, who was present as chief guest during the event, alleging she left the venue after the accident. She, however, said she had left the place before the accident took place and rushed to the hospital the moment she came to know of it.

    SAD leader Bikram Singh Majithia had also accused the former local MLA of “running away from the accident site”.
