  • First send your children to border: Gautam Gambhir to Navjot Sidhu over his ‘bada bhai’ remark to Imran Khan

    By PTI

NEW DELHI: Delhi BJP MP Gautam Gambhir on Friday slammed Punjab Congress chief Navjot Sidhu for calling Pakistan Prime Minister Imran Khan his “elder brother”, asking him to send his children to the border before making such remarks.

The cricketer-turned-politician also said India has been fighting against terrorism sponsored by Pakistan for 70 years and it is “shameful” on part of Sidhu to call the prime minister of a “terrorist country” his big brother.

“Send ur son or daughter to the border & then call a terrorist state head ur big brother! #Disgusting #Spineless,” he tweeted.

Sidhu, who offered prayers at Kartarpur Sahib gurdwara in Pakistan earlier in the day, was effusive in his praise for Khan.

“Imran Khan is my elder brother. I am greatly honoured. He (Khan) gave us a lot of love,” he said.

Gambhir, the Lok Sabha MP from East Delhi, further said in a statement, “Does Sidhu remember that Pakistani terrorists killed more than 40 of our civilians and jawans in Kashmir in the last one month?” Sidhu, a former Team India member, had earlier courted controversy by embracing then Pakistan Army chief General Bajwa during a visit to the neighbouring country in 2018.

  • Channi, Sidhu meet amid differences over key appointments

    By PTI

CHANDIGARH: AICC Punjab affairs in-charge Harish Chaudhary on Monday held a meeting with CM Charanjit Singh Channi and Congress state unit president Navjot Singh Sidhu, amid unease between the two leaders over some government appointments.

The meeting was held just a few hours after Sidhu called a press conference and questioned his party’s government in the state over the status of the investigation into the 2015 Kotkapura police firing incident.

Cabinet Minister Pargat Singh, considered close to Sidhu, was also present at the meeting, sources said.

During the meeting, it is learned that Sidhu had raised the issue of appointment of A P S Deol and Iqbal Preet Singh Sahota as the state’s advocate general and officiating director general of police (DGP), respectively.

Last week, Sidhu had said he had withdrawn his resignation as the Punjab Congress chief but also put a precondition that he would resume the charge the day a new advocate general is appointed in place of Deol and a panel for the appointment of a new DGP comes from the UPSC.

Talking to reporters on Monday, cabinet minister Raj Kumar Verka said Channi and Sidhu held a meeting here and “whatever misunderstandings will soon be removed”.

Asked how differences between both leaders will end, Verka said Chaudhary had discussed issues with Channi and Sidhu separately and jointly.

“There were some issues and they have been sorted to a large extent today and whatever remaining issues will be resolved soon,” he said.

To a question on replacing the AG and DGP, he said, “You will get answers on all these things very soon.”

On November 2, Sidhu, Channi and Chaudhary had gone to Uttarakhand to offer prayers at the Himalaya shrine of Kedarnath.

The same day, they along with other senior leaders had held a meeting to discuss strategy for the upcoming Assembly elections.

At that time, Sidhu had said that “all is well”.

The former cricketer has been opposing the appointment of Deol and Sahota.

Both Sahota and Deol were considered as the choice of Chief Minister Charanjit Singh Channi.

Earlier, Sidhu had questioned the state government over the steps taken for ensuring delivery of justice in sacrilege incidents and making a special task force (STF) report in drug cases public.

  • Navjot Sidhu obstructing functioning of govt, spreading misinformation: Punjab AG APS Deol

    By PTI

CHANDIGARH: Punjab Advocate General A P S Deol on Saturday attacked Congress leader Navjot Singh Sidhu, accusing him of obstructing the functioning of the state government and his office as well as “spreading misinformation to gain political advantage”.

Deol’s remarks came a day after Sidhu withdrew his resignation as Punjab Congress chief but declared that he will not re-assume charge till Deol is removed as AG and a panel set up for the appointment of the new director general of police (DGP).

Sidhu had resigned from the post on September 28. In a statement, Deol said Sidhu’s “repeated utterances seek to derail the earnest efforts of the state government to ensure justice in the drugs matter and the sacrilege cases”.

“Navjot Singh Sidhu is obstructing the functioning of the government and the office of the advocate general,” he alleged.

“Navjot Singh Sidhu is spreading misinformation to gain political advantage over his political colleagues. “There is a concerted attempt by vested interests to malign the functioning of the Congress party in view of coming elections in Punjab for their selfish political gain by politicking the constitutional office of the Advocate General of Punjab,” he added.

Sidhu, the Amritsar East MLA, has been opposing Deol’s appointment as the state AG and Iqbal Preet Singh Sahota’s as DGP. Both Deol and Sahota are considered Chief Minister Charanjit Singh Channi’s choices.

Last month, Sidhu had said that the Congress would have “no face” if the AG and DGP were not removed. Deol had represented former Punjab DGP Sumedh Singh Saini in cases related to the 2015 sacrilege incidents and police firing on protesters, while Sahota was the head of the special investigation team formed by the previous SAD-BJP government to probe the sacrilege incidents.

Deol had replaced Atul Nanda, who had stepped down in September following the resignation of Amarinder Singh as Punjab chief minister. Early this week, there were reports that Deol had offered to resign as AG. However, the senior advocate refuted the reports.

  • Lakhimpur Kheri violence: Sidhu sits on ‘maun vrat’ at late journalist’s house

    By Express News Service

LUCKNOW: Congress leader Navjot Singh Siddhu, who, on Friday visited Lakhimpur Kheri in connection with the Sunday incident, sat on a maun vrat (fasting for silence) at the residence of deceased journalist Raman Kashyap who was killed in the violence.

Sidhu, who paid a visit to the late journalist’s house in Nighasan Tehsil in the district, said the silent agitation would continue till the accused in the case were arrested.

Sidhu has proceeded with a huge contingent of Congress workers to Lakhimpur but was taken into custody at Saharanpur border on Thursday. He was accompanied with the ministers of Punjab government and Congress MLAs. However, on Friday, he was allowed to go to the trouble-torn district.

It may be recalled that eight persons including four farmers and Kashyap, were killed during the clashes that took place following a protest by the farmers against the visit of UP Deputy CM Keshav Prasad Maurya on Sunday.

  • Amarinder to join BJP? Former Punjab CM likely to meet Amit Shah during Delhi visit

    By IANS

CHANDIGARH: Less than a fortnight after he was ‘unceremoniously’ asked to quit as the Punjab CM in the run-up to the Assembly polls, Congress veteran Amarinder Singh is likely to meet Union Home Minister and BJP leader Amit Shah in Delhi late Tuesday evening.

The former CM is also likely to meet BJP president JP Nadda, sources said.

However, Amarinder Singh’s media advisor denied his meeting with the BJP leaders, saying he’s on a personal visit to Delhi to meet some friends.

“Too much being read into @capt_amarinder’s visit to Delhi. He’s on a personal visit, during which he’ll meet some friends and also vacate Kapurthala house for the new CM. No need for any unnecessary speculation,” Thukral informed in a tweet.

The proposed meeting seems crucial as Amarinder Singh has been saying that he stepped down as he felt ‘humiliated.

At the same time, he said the “future politics option is always there” and he will use that option.

Speculations are rife that Amarinder Singh is likely to join the BJP.

After his resignation, Amarinder Singh said he had offered his resignation to party president Sonia Gandhi three weeks earlier but she had asked him to continue. “If she had just called me and asked me to step down, I would have,” he said, adding that “as a soldier, I know how to do my task and leave once I am called back”.

He had said he had even told Sonia Gandhi that he was ready to hang his boots and allow someone else to take over as the Chief Minister after leading the Congress to another sweeping win in Punjab. “But that did not happen, so I will fight,” he asserted, taking strong exception to being subjected to humiliation by calling a Congress Legislative Party meeting in a secretive manner, without taking him into confidence.

“I would not have taken MLAs on a flight to Goa or some place. That is not how I operate. I don’t do gimmicks, and the Gandhi siblings know that is not my way,” he had said, adding, “Priyanka and Rahul (Gandhi siblings) are like my children, this should not have ended like this. I am hurt.”

He said the Gandhi children were quite inexperienced and their advisors were clearly misguiding them.

Indicating that he was still keeping his political options open, the former Chief Minister had said he was talking to his friends before deciding on his future course of action.

After his resignation and political tussle, Charanjit Singh Channi, a Scheduled Caste Sikh, took oath of office on September 20 along with his two deputies — one a Jat Sikh and another belonging to the Hindu community.

Sukhjinder Singh Randhawa and O.P. Soni, both ministers in previous Council of Ministers led by Amarinder Singh, took oath for the posts of the Deputy Chief Ministers.

  • Sidhu a ‘drama master’, Congress will struggle to touch double digits in next Punjab polls: Amarinder

    Express News Service

CHANDIGARH: Terming Navjot Sidhu the “super CM” of Punjab, former CM Capt Amarinder Singh on Wednesday said he would fight the former’s elevation tooth and nail.

Amarinder Singh said he would make any sacrifice to save the country from such a dangerous man. He said he would pit a strong candidate against the PPCC president in the 2022 Assembly polls to ensure his defeat. “He (Sidhu) is dangerous for the state,” he said.

Sidhu, who could not handle his own ministry, is now managing the cabinet. “If Sidhu behaves as the super CM, the party won’t function,” he said, adding that under this “drama master’s leadership”, it would be a big thing if the Congress managed to touch double digits in Punjab polls.

Asserting that he will only leave politics on a high, Amarinder said, “I was ready to leave after victory but never after a loss. He said he had offered his resignation to Congress chief Sonia Gandhi three weeks earlier but she had asked him to continue. “Had she just called me to step down, I would have,” he said, adding that “as a soldier, I know how to do my task.

Amarinder said he had even told Sonia Gandhi that he was ready to hang his boots and allow someone else to take over as CM after leading the Congress to another sweeping win in Punjab. “But that did not happen, so I will fight,” he asserted.

The former CM took strong exception to call the CLP meeting without taking him into confidence.  “I would not have taken the MLAs on a flight to Goa or some other place. That is not how I operate. I don’t do gimmicks, and the Gandhi siblings know that is not my way,” he said, adding, “Priyanka and Rahul  (Gandhi siblings) are like my children… this should not have ended like this. I am hurt.”

Amarinder said Priyanka Gandhi Vadra and Rahul Gandhi were quite inexperienced and their advisors were clearly misguiding them.

Indicating that he was still keeping his political options open, Amarinder said he would talk to his friends before deciding on his future course of action. “You can be old at 40 and young at 80,” he quipped, making it clear that he did not see his age as a hurdle.

On allegations of inaccessibility,  Amarinder said he had been elected to the Assembly seven times and twice to the Parliament. “There must be something right with me,” he remarked, adding that the Congress leadership had evidently decided on making the change (in Punjab) and were trying to make up a case.

Referring to complaints that he did not take action against the Badals and Majithia in the sacrilege and drugs cases, the former CM said he believed in allowing the law to take its course. “But now these people, who were complaining against me are in power, let them throw the Akali leaders behind bars if they can!” he retorted. Taking a jibe against Sidhu & Co. over allegations of not taking action against ministers involved in the mining mafia, he quipped, “Those very ministers are now with these leaders!”

Ridiculing the way Punjab was being run from Delhi now, Amarinder said as the CM, he had called the shots and appointed his own ministers, as he knew the capability of each of them. How can Congress leaders such as KC Venugopal or Ajay Maken or Randeep Surjewala decide who is good for which ministry, he questioned? “Our religions teach us that all are equal. I don’t look at people based on their caste, it’s about their efficiency,” he said, in an obvious reference to the caste considerations that had dictated the choice of the new leadership in the state.

Taking a dig at Sidhu’s interference in Charanjit Singh Channi’s domain, the ex-CM said the PPCC should just decide on party affairs. “I had a very good PPCC president. I took his advice but he never told me how to run the government,” he added, contrasting it with the way Sidhu was virtually dictating the terms, with Channi simply nodding along.

  • Harish Rawat meets Punjab CM Amarinder Singh, asks to reduce power tariffs

    By PTI

CHANDIGARH: AICC general secretary Harish Rawat on Wednesday asked Punjab Chief Minister Amarinder Singh to provide relief to people by reducing power tariffs, one of the major demands of state Congress president Navjot Singh Sidhu.

He also told reporters that power purchase rates with private power companies should be renegotiated and the benefit of reduced prices should be passed on to consumers.

Rawat, who is the in-charge of party Punjab affairs at the AICC, had arrived in Chandigarh on Tuesday amid the ongoing tussle in the camps of Amarinder Singh and Sidhu.

Rawat on Wednesday met the CM at his residence in Mohali’s Siswan.

The meeting lasted for about three hours.

After the meeting, Rawat said he told the CM that the state government should provide some relief to power consumers.

“At present, we are in the government and should provide some relief to power consumers,” he said.

Rawat also took an update from Amarinder Singh on the progress on an 18-point programme given by the party high command.

The former Uttarakhand CM came to Chandigarh to meet party leaders and listen to their issues, days after four ministers and several party legislators raised a banner of revolt against the CM over unfulfilled promises.

The Sidhu camp has been pressing Amarinder to take action on the 18-point programme given by the Congress high command.

This programme included action in desecration and subsequent police firing incidents, arrest of the “big fish” behind drug rackets and scrapping of power purchase agreements signed with private companies.
