Residents of Hingoli and surrounding districts in Maharashtra woke up to shaking ground on Saturday as a 4.7 magnitude earthquake jolted the area around 8:45 AM. The epicenter was pinpointed in Vasmat tehsil’s Shirli village, at a shallow depth of 10 km, sending mild tremors to Washim, Risod, Nanded, and Parbhani.

Hingoli Collector Rahul Gupta reported superficial damage, such as hairline cracks in a few village homes and community halls in Panga Shinde. No injuries or loss of life were noted, a relief amid the initial panic. Local disaster response units sprang into action, conducting surveys and reassuring the public via announcements.

This quake adds to a series of recent seismic events in South Asia. On April 4, a stronger 5.9 magnitude tremor from Afghanistan affected northern India, including Delhi, Noida, and Gurugram, causing buildings to sway and prompting evacuations. In Kabul, it tragically collapsed a house, killing eight.

Seismologists note that Maharashtra lies on the stable Peninsular Shield, but intraplate earthquakes like this are not uncommon. Authorities have ramped up vigilance, with helplines active and engineers inspecting vulnerable structures. Citizens are advised to identify safe spots in homes, stock emergency kits, and follow ‘drop, cover, hold on’ protocols for future safety.

As aftershocks remain a possibility, the focus shifts to recovery and education. Community leaders are organizing awareness drives to combat misinformation, ensuring measured responses to nature’s unpredictable forces.
