  • lok sabha: Lok Sabha battle: BJP’s Sarbananda Sonowal eyes victory in Dibrugarh as Assam heads to polls in first phase

As the vibrant Bihu festival lights up the spirit of Assam, the buzz of electoral politics resonates just as strongly through the streets of Dibrugarh.

This key parliamentary seat is grabbing headlines as it prepares for the polls on April 19, part of the first phase of elections in the state.

Dibrugarh is especially under the spotlight with Sarbananda Sonowal, the BJP’s high-profile candidate and Union Minister of Ports, Shipping, and Waterways, throwing his hat into the ring. Speaking to during his hectic campaign trail, the senior BJP leader said, “I am blessed to be given the opportunity by the party to contest as the BJP candidate for the prestigious Dibrugarh constituency. I convey my sincere thanks to the party leadership–Prime Minister Narendra Modi, Party President JP Nadda, and Home Minister Amit Shah–for their faith in me.”

“Given the good work done by the Narendra Modi government for the people of Assam, especially for those in the Dibrugarh Lok Sabha constituency since 2014, I am very confident that people will repose their faith in the leadership of Modi ji as we move ahead towards becoming a Viksit Bharat,” the BJP candidate and Rajya Sabha MP said.

The BJP, which first came to power in the state in 2016 with Sonowal as the Chief Minister, has been exuding confidence as its main rival, Congress, leads an alliance of opposition parties, including Asom Jatiyo Parishad (AJP). Although Congress is the main opposition in the state, the party decided not to contest its once stronghold, handing it over to its alliance partner, AJP. “Wherever I go campaigning for the BJP, I am accorded immense love and adulation from the people, who have deep faith in the leadership of Prime Minister Narendra Modi ji. It is this pure admiration of the people for Modi ji’s leadership that gives me confidence that the BJP-led NDA will win 12 plus seats in Assam, 22 plus seats in the Northeast, and 400 plus seats in the country. To most voters, it is a foregone conclusion that Narendra Modi will become the Prime Minister for the third consecutive term,” Sonowal said.

The Dibrugarh Lok Sabha constituency is all set to witness a triangular fight, between Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) candidate Manoj Dhanowar. However, the main contest is seen between the BJP’s Sarbanda Sonowal and Lurinjyoti Gogoi of the Assam Jatiya Parishad (AJP).

Both Gogoi and Sonowal are former leaders of the All Assam Students Union (AASU). Gogoi’s name came into prominence during the anti-CAA protests in Assam in 2019.

With more than 1.6 million voters, the Dibrugarh Lok Sabha seat covers two administrative districts, including Dibrugarh and Tinsukia. It comprises ten Legislative Assembly constituencies: Margherita, Digboi, Makum, Tinsukia, Chabua, Lahowal, Dibrugarh, Khowang, Duliajan, Tingkhong, and Naharkatia.

In the 2019 Lok Sabha elections, the BJP’s Rameswar Teli won with 659,583 votes, defeating the Congress’ Paban Singh Ghatowar by a margin of 364,566 votes.

Assam has 14 Lok Sabha seats where the BJP is contesting 11 seats, while its ally, the Asom Gana Parishad (AGP), is contesting in two seats, Barpeta and Dhubri, and the United People’s Party Liberal (UPPL) is contesting on the Kokrajhar seat.

The Congress, as the main opposition party in the state, is contesting from 12 seats but is supporting their ally AJP in Dibrugarh. AAP, which is a relatively new party in the state, is contesting the Sonitpur and Dibrugarh seats.

The election for the 14 seats in Assam is scheduled to be held over three phases.

The first phase includes five constituencies from Upper Assam: Dibrugarh, Jorhat, Lakhimpur, Kaziranga, and Sonitpur. Except for Dibrugarh, the BJP is in direct contest with the Congress.

The second phase on April 26 will cover the Lok Sabha constituencies of Karimganj, Silchar, Diphu, Darrang-Udalguri, and Nagaon, while the third phase will include Guwahati, Barpeta, Kokrajhar, and Dhubri seats.

  • Shivamogga Lok Sabha seat: KS Eshwarappa using Modi photo, BJP complains to EC

The BJP on Wednesday sought the Election Commission’s intervention to restrain senior leader KS Eshwarappa from using the pictures of Prime Minister Narendra Modi in Shivamogga where he is contesting as an independent candidate.

Modi’s picture can be used only by BJP candidates or alliance partners. But the independent candidate Eshwarappa has been misleading, saying he is contesting on behalf of Modi and other BJP leaders. He is confusing the voters, and his act will have a bearing on the elections and hence constitutes an office, the BJP said in a letter to the Commission.

The party also sought stringent action against Eshwarappa and a direction to him not to use the image of Modi and other BJP leaders.Eshwarappa, a senior Kuruba (other backward classes) leader and a former state BJP president, has been firm in his decision to take on Yediyurapps’s son, BY Raghavendra, the official BJP candidate in Shivamogga.

DMK Busy Promoting Family Rule: Modi

Modi alleged that DMK took votes from the people of Chennai for years but did nothing much for the city. “DMK is busy furthering corruption and family rule. Their MPs are not accessible to the people, particularly whenever the times are challenging. The recent public information on the Katchatheevu surrender point to how Congress and DMK were complicit in harming our strategic interests and the well-being of our fishermen and fisherwomen. No wonder this time, Chennai is all set to reject DMK and Congress,” he said.

Modi assured that the NDA government will keep working for the welfare of the vibrant city. “Over the last few years, I have come here very often to inaugurate and lay the foundation stone for key projects which will boost ‘Ease of Living.’ At the root of this is connectivity. The BJP leader claimed that remarkable work is underway in the housing sector as lakhs of houses have been built across Tamil Nadu under PM-Awas Yojana. “Some time ago, many houses built as a part of Light House Project were inaugurated thus giving wings to several aspirations. Our Government is also working on projects like a Multi-Modal Logistics Park and a Discovery Campus at IIT-Madras, which will boost business as well as innovation,” said Modi.

Invoking the Tamil culture to woo the voters, Modi said that the NDA government accords topmost respect to Tamil culture and added that he felt proud after getting an opportunity to speak a few words in Tamil language at the UN. “We will continue to make Tamil culture and language popular at the world stage. • In Rajasthan’s Barmer, Ravindra Singh Bhati Sets Stage For BJP vs ‘Independent BJP’ Battle |

The BJP has fielded Kailash Choudhary, Union Minister of State for Agriculture and Farmers’ Welfare and sitting MP from Barmer, from the Lok Sabha seat once again. However, this time, Choudhary is facing a familiar challenger – Ravindra Singh Bhati. Bhati has filed his nomination paper independently after he was denied a ticket by the BJP. According to reports, the BJP tried to convince Bhati to not contest from the seat independently but he did not buzz.

    Triangular Contest In Barmer

Ravindra Singh Bhati is currently MLA from the Sheo Constituency and wanted to contest the parliamentary polls on the BJP ticket. Bhati has been a popular leader since his college days but has been ignored by the BJP on many occasions. Now, the Barmer seat will have a triangular contest from the seat. Congress has fielded Umedaram, former RLP leader and close aide of Hanuman Beniwal from the seat. Umedaram is a leader with an impeccable image.

Barmer majorly has Jat and Rajput voters. With Bhati contesting from the seat, he is likely to get support of Rajput voters. However, Choudhary and Umedaram are Jat leaders and thus may witness a split in Jat voters that may benefit Bhati.

    Bhati’s BJP Pitch

The BJP has moved the election commission against Ravindra Singh Bhati’s poll campaign in which he is using Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s photo with the caption “Forgive Us Modi Ji. We are giving you Ravindra in place of Kailash. I am Modi’s family”. The pamphlet bears the photo of Narendra Modi and Ravindra Singh Bhati. Bhati has made it clear that even if he wins as an independent candidate, will extend support to Modi.

    Ravindra Bhati’s Rebellious History

Ravindra Singh Bhati has been a courageous leader since his college days. It was his rebellious nature that won him accolades. When Akhil Bharatiya Vidyarthi Parishad (ABVP) did not give him a ticket for the student elections at Jay Narayan Vyas University, he contested independently and for the first time in its 57-year history, became the independent president of the university. The rebellion did not end there. Before the 2023 Assembly elections, when the BJP denied him a ticket from the Sheo constituency in Barmer, Bhati once again entered the independent arena and defeated 84-year-old senior Congress leader Amin Khan with a record victory margin creating history. For the third time, Ravindra Bhati has filed an independent nomination from the Barmer Lok Sabha seat. This time, he will challenge BJP’s central minister Kailash Choudhary.
