NEW DELHI:  Prime Minister Narendra Modi will head to the poll bound states of West Bengal and Assam on January 23.

In West Bengal, the prime minister will take part in the celebrations of the 125th birth anniversary of Subhash Chandra Bose, while he will distribute land rights to the indigenous people in Assam on the same day.

While the BJP will be seeking to retain power in Assam, the saffron outfit is building up a campaign in West Bengal to wrest power from the ruling Trinamool Congress.

“Prime Minister will visit Kolkata to address the Parakram Diwas celebrations on January 23 to commemorate the 125th birth anniversary year of Netaji Subhas Chandra Bose. Prime Minister will also visit Jerenga Pathar in Sivasagar, Assam to distribute 1.06 lakh land pattas/allotment certificates,” the Prime Minister’s Office (PMO) said in a media statement.

The Prime Minister will preside over the inaugural function of the Parakram Diwas at Victoria Memorial in Kolkata.

“In order to honour and remember Netaji’s indomitable spirit and selfless service to the nation, the government has decided to celebrate his birthday on January 23 every year as Parakram Diwas to inspire people of the country to act with fortitude,” the PMO added.

The PMO also stated that a permanent exhibition and a projection mapping show on Netaji will be inaugurated on the occasion.“A commemorative coin and postage stamp will also be released by the Prime Minister. A cultural programme Amra  Nuton Jouboneri Doot, based on the theme of Netaji, will also be held,” added the PMO.

    Renewed land policy

In Assam, the PM will distribute 1.06 lakh land pattas in Sivasagar. “Taking into account an urgent need to protect the land rights of indigenous people Government of Assam came out with a new land policy with renewed emphasis on protecting their land rights. The issuance of patta for indigenous people of Assam has been given highest priority in order to instill a sense of security amongst them,” said the PMO in the statement

  • Ahead of polls, PM to ‘patta’ allotment scheme to over 1 lakh indigenous people in Assam

    By PTI
GUWAHATI: Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Saturday will launch a special programme of the Assam government to distribute land ‘patta’ or land allotment certificates to over one lakh landless indigenous people.

This is for the first time since independence that such a large number of people will be given ‘patta’ in Assam in one go.

“The prime minister will formally launch the distribution of land ‘patta’ to more than one lakh indigenous people who have been living uncertain lives for decades. No government in Assam has ever took such a people-friendly initiative in the past,” Assam Chief Minister Sarbananda Sonowal told PTI.

The event will be held at Jerenga Pothar in Sivasagar district, a historical place connected with Assam’s erstwhile Ahom kingdom.

Sonowal said many government land, tribal blocks were encroached by suspected illegal immigrants and his government took the initiative to evict them and provide the land to the indigenous people — most of them are tribals, OBCs and ex-tea garden labourers.

“The successive Congress governments ignored the pleas of the local people to give the land rights as a result the people have been living a life of constant fear.

We will end this uncertainty and the prime minister will begin this noble process,” he said.

Sonowal said to fulfil people’s aspirations, the BJP-led government took this initiative to safeguard ‘jati, mati and bheti (community, land and roots).

“It is an irony that due to the previous government’s lackadaisical approach and indifferent attitude, the landless indigenous people were deprived of their rights for long 70 years.

They even had to go through intense sufferings to safeguard their base,” he said.

An official said because of the uncontrolled migration from across the border, the demography of the state, especially the lower Assam region had gone through unprecedented changes.

“The phenomenon snowballed into a grave problem of changing the demographic profile in some districts of the state.

Some of the lower Assam districts have borne the brunt of implosion of doubtful citizens which were once dominated by indigenous communities,” the official said.

To reverse this trend, it became imperative for the present state government to ensure granting of land to the indigenous land less families, the official said.

The Sonowal government has already allotted land ‘patta’ to more than one lakh landless indigenous families.

The state government will allot a total of 2,28,160 land ‘pattas’ in just 4.5 years and the prime minister will initiate the beginning of allotting pattas to 1.06 lakh people on January 23 at the historic Jerenga Pothar in Sivasagar, another official said.

The  state government even took steps in freeing the encroachments from Kaziranga National Park and ‘Xatras’ (Vaishnavite monasteries).

As a result, rhino poaching has come down to almost zero.

The Jerenga Pothar is where the great Sati Jaimati showed her grit and patriotism and the government’s decision of handing over of land pattas to the local indigenous families assume great importance, the official said.

Assam had 5.75 lakh landless families in 2016.

    Express News Service
NEW DELHI:  The Centre on Wednesday withdrew its plea seeking an injunction against the proposed tractor rally being planned by the farmers’ groups on January 26 against the new agriculture laws after the Supreme Court allowed the Delhi Police to withdraw the application, saying “it is a police matter”.

The bench headed by Chief Justice of India S A Bobde refused to keep the application pending, asserting that “this is not a matter for the court to decide. You (the police) have the powers under the law”.

During the hearing, Attorney General K K Venugopal informed the court that 5,000 tractors were going to enter Delhi for the rally. Solicitor General Tushar Mehta also demanded that the case be considered on January 25, after seeing how the situation develops.

“No, no. This is not a matter for the court to decide. You have the powers under the law. It’s highly inappropriate for the court to act as the first authority to allow or disallow protesters. We can allow you to withdraw the application. You are the executive and you have the power to look into this. It’s an issue of law and order and of the police,” the court said.

The Delhi Police had approached the SC seeking direction to stop farmers’ proposed tractor rally on Republic Day.

“Right to protest is always subject to the countervailing public order and the public interest. The right to protest can never include maligning the nation globally,” Delhi Police had submitted.

The bench said the authorities can record the statement of Bhushan’s clients that they also want peace and they should talk on the issue.

    By Express News Service
NEW DELHI: Leaking sensitive military details is treason and those involved in such “anti-national activities” must be punished, former defence minister AK Antony said as he demanded the PM to come clean in the row involving senior journalist Arnab Goswami.

Antony was joined by party colleagues Ghulam Nabi Azad, Sushilkumar Shinde and Salman Khurshid at a press conference on Wednesday, with the Congress cranking up the pressure on the Centre in the controversy over Goswami’s purported WhatsApp chats.

On Tuesday, ex-Congress chief Rahul Gandhi had asserted that the leak of sensitive information was a “criminal act”.

At the press briefing, Antony said those involved in such acts deserve no mercy and an inquiry into the information leak about the Balakot air strikes must be ordered immediately.

“Leaking of official secret is a criminal act. Leaking official secret about military operation, national security matters, sensitive military operations especially military strike is treason, anti-national. They have to be punished for anti-national activities, for treason. They deserve no mercy.”

India’s security has never been compromised in such a way and never have the high offices of the prime minister, home minister and others been brazenly compromised, Antony claimed.

Recalling his long stint as defence minister, he asserted, only one of the top five in the government are suspect in this case.

Later, a joint statement by the Congress leaders questioned whether the government had any right left to continue in office after such “damning revelations”.

“We demand that the prime minister should come clean on these accusations immediately in order to restore the severely damaged credibility of the highest office of the country,” they said in the statement.

    By Express News Service
