  • Committed to the empowerment of kisans, says PM Modi in fresh outreach

    Express News Service
LUCKNOW: Continuing his efforts to pacify the agitating farmers, Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Thursday said his government was committed to their empowerment and self-reliance. He was inaugurating the centenary celebrations of the Chauri Chaura incident in UP, where violence shook the British Raj during the freedom struggle.

Releasing a postal stamp to mark the occasion, the PM said that over 1,000 mandis were being connected with the online agriculture trading platform e-NAM.

“The mandis will be turned into markets of profit for farmers to sell their produce with ease,” he said. Modi listed several measures taken by the Centre towards making farmers self-dependent in the last six years. He said even during the Covid pandemic, the country’s food grain production has soared.

He called upon people to unite in the spirit of freedom struggle to make the growth missions, including Atmanirbhar Bharat Mission, a success. The PM said the Centre was making all efforts to help farmers become atmanirbhar (self-reliant) and had allocated Rs 40,000 crore for the development of rural infrastructure in the Budget.

“Farmers will directly benefit from investment in the infrastructure sector. Agriculture will turn into a profitable venture for farmers,” he asserted.

On the Chauri Chaura incident, the PM said the efforts of the UP government had resulted in changing the scenario in the Gorakhpur region.

“Earlier, factories were closed, roads were damaged and hospitals shut. Now, a fertilizer factory has come up, which will benefit farmers and generate jobs.” The Chauri Chaura incident is significant in India’s Independence movement.

On February 4, 1922, supporters of the Non-Cooperation Movement clashed with the colonial police, which opened fire. In retaliation, the demonstrators torched the Chauri Chaura police post in Gorakhpur in which 23 personnel were burnt alive. Elaborating on the Budget, the PM said experts were earlier apprehensive about the possible introduction of new taxs owing to the pandemic and the subsequent economic crisis.

“Experts were thinking that the Budget would burden the common man with new taxes. But the Centre ensured that the people are not saddled with additional burden,” Modi said.

    It’s now a ledger account

“The Budget this time has virtually turned into an account book (bahi-khata) of income & expenditure,” Modi said.

Ruckus continues in Lok Sabha, bill introduced

Lok Sabha proceedings were disrupted for the third consecutive day on Thursday due to protests by the Opposition over the new farms laws. Amid the din and adjournments, Law Minister Ravi Shankar Prasad  introduced a bill to amend the arbitration law and Union minister Nitin Gadkari replied to a few questions during Question Hour. In the Rajya Sabha, the Opposition launched a vociferous attack on the Centre’s handling of the farmers’ agitation.

    FIR against protest toolkit

The Delhi Police lodged a first information report against unnamed authors of a toolkit that offered suggestions on rustling up international support for the ongoing farmers protests. The toolkit has been doing the rounds on social media and was tweeted by, among others, Swedish teen climate change activist Greta Thunberg. She then deleted and later reposted an updated version of the toolkit. Praveer Ranjan, Special Commissioner of Police said, “We haven’t named anybody in the FIR, it’s only against the creators of toolkit which is a matter of investigation.”

Preliminary enquiry has revealed that the toolkit was created by the Poetic Justice Foundation, a pro-Khalistani outfit. However, legal experts were appalled by the FIR. Senior advocate K V Dhananjay said, “Everybody in the world is competent to tweet about human rights abuse anywhere in the world. It is shameful that the Delhi Police is making our police force, judiciary and the legal profession become a laughing stock the world over.”

  • PM Modi praise: Is Shah Faesal trying to claw back in Kashmir?

    Express News Service
SRINAGAR: After burning boats and criticising the Narendra Modi government for abrogating Article 370, IAS officer-turned politician Shah Faesal, who quit politics after his release from detention last year, has fuelled speculation that he is again trying to become part of the system by praising the Prime Minister and his government’s stand on farmers.

Faesal’s new-found love for the Modi government has led to speculation that he may have mended his ways with the Centre and is eyeing a comeback in a different role in J&K.

After two years of Faesal quitting his civil service job, his resignation has not been accepted by the government. A 2010 batch IAS topper, he had quit in January 2019 to join politics.

Two months later, he formed J&K Peoples Movement. Faesal and his party became an instant hit among the youth. Despite that, some analysts opined that Faesal quit his job and plunged into politics at the behest of BJP to help the saffron party in the long run.

He was among the signatories of the August 4, 2019, Gupkar declaration vowing to safeguard J&K’s special status and also among mainstream leaders arrested after the scrapping of Article 370.

But after his release from detention, Faesal went silent and on August 10, announced quitting politics. After nearly five months of silence, Faesal praised the Modi government’s vaccination drive and described India as “jagat guru”. On the farmers protests, he backed the stand of Indian celebrities and cricket stars, saying: “Yes. Ghar ki baat ghar ke andar hi acchi.”

With Faesal not missing an opportunity to praise Modi, there is speculation that he may return to his civil service job.

There is also speculation that he may be appointed advisor to any of the two Lt Governors of J&K and Ladakh Untion Territories. For now, Faesal seems least bothered about the avalacnhe of trolls by netizens regarding his U-turn. Asked about his future plans, Faesal told The New Indian Express, “Have pat ience, you would know everything”.

  • Parties with less MPs should get ample time to put forth the issues of their states: PM Narendra Modi

    By ANI
NEW DELHI: During the all-party meeting on Saturday, Prime Minister Narendra Modi asserted that smaller parties (having fewer MPs in Parliament) should get ample amount of time to present their views and issues pertaining to their states, according to Union Minister of Parliamentary Affairs Pralhad Joshi.

While talking to the media, the Minister gave details about the all-party meeting.

“During all-party meetings, smaller parties demanded that they should get an ample amount of time to put forth issues pertaining to their states, to which PM Modi said that the government agrees to it. He urged all the big parties including BJP not to disrupt the house as when the house is disrupted, most of the harm is done to small political parties as their time gets deducted. PM Modi said that everyone should appeal that the house should continue to function without disruption,” Joshi said.

Joshi said that all-party meeting has been conducted in the presence of Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Defence Minister Rajnath Singh.

“Almost all parties participated in the meeting. Opposition parties have demanded a discussion on Farm laws and farmers issues. We agreed. In the end, the Prime Minister said that the offer which has been given by Agriculture Minister Narendra Singh Tomar on January 22 still stands and the government is ready for the discussion on all issues,” Joshi said.

Joshi said that “In eleventh round of Centre-farmer negotiation, we had said that government is open for discussion. Agriculture Minister had said that he is just a phone call away. Whenever you give a call he is ready for discussion. It still stands good. This is what PM said (in the all-party meet).”

On January 22, during the 11th round of talks with protesting farmers, the government proposed to suspend the new legislations for one-and-a-half years and also proposed to set up a joint committee to discuss the Acts.

The Parliamentary Affairs Minister said, “The PM said that in today’s global scenario, India can make great contributions to the world. It will lead to the development and the poor will be benefited with that development. It is not a question of credit to the government but of the success of the nation.”

“So PM said that everyone must make an effort together to make contributions. The govt is ready for all discussions required for this, the PM said. Almost all parties congratulated PM for the successful rollout of vaccination,” he added.

Joshi said that PM Modi has strongly condemned the vandalism of Mahatma Gandhi statue in the US (in California). “This is a huge insult. The PM has strongly condemned it,” Joshi said.

The Minister further said that leaders of all the parties congratulated PM Modi for the successful roll-out of vaccination drive.
