  • Narendra Giri suicide case: Two disciples seek HC permission to withdraw case

    Express News Service

LUCKNOW: The sensational suicide case of Narendra Giri, the late president of Akhil Bharatiya Akhada Parishad (ABAP) — a conglomerate of 13 monastic orders of Sanatan Dharma, has taken a crucial turn when Amar Giri, the manager of Bade Hanumanji temple of Prayagraj and member of Niranjani Akhada along with Pawan Maharaj of Baghambari Gaddi Muthh moved Allahabad High Court seeking permission to initiate legal proceedings to end the case.

Both Amar Giri and Pawan Maharaj are the disciples of the late ABAP president. They had lodged an FIR in connection with the alleged suicide of Narendra Giri.

Now they have filed their respective affidavits in Allahabad High Court seeking permission to move an application before the trial court to withdraw their FIR.

However, the current president of ABAP Ravindra Puri, on Saturday, said that the FIR filed in connection with case of Narendra Giri’s death would not be withdrawn though the complainants — Amar Giri and Pawan Maharaj—had moved the application to seek Allahabad High Court permission to initiate legal formalities to end the case.

Ravindra Pauri said that he would be visiting Prayagraj on August 16 and convince Amar Giri not to withdraw the FIR.

The ABAP president said that when the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) and the state government were probing the case of the suicide of Mahant Narendra Giri there was no question of withdrawing the FIR.

Notably, both Amar Giri and Pawan Maharaj had claimed in their respective affidavits submitted in High Court that they had only informed the police about the death of Mahant Narendra Giri at Baghambari Ashram in Prayagraj and did not name anyone as accused.

Their application is being seen as an effort to help Anand Giri, the former disciple and the main accused in the case pertaining to the death of Narendra Giri, secure bail and come out of jail. Anand Giri, the amin accused in the case is lodged in Naini Central Jail.

Meanwhile, Amar Giri said on Saturday that he wanted to withdraw the FIR just because his name was being unnecessarily dragged in the entire incident whereas he had not named anyone and did not want any innocent person to be punished.

Earlier, the High Court had adjourned the hearing of the bail application of Anand Giri, the estranged disciple of the late Mahant and key accused in his suicide case, till August 18.

On September 20, 2021, Mahant Narendra Giri was found hanging from the ceiling of his room at Shri Math Baghambari Gaddi in the Georgetown police station area of Prayagraj.

In his suicide note, the Mahant had charged Anand Giri and two others with mental harassment. An FIR was lodged against the three accused under Section 306 (abetment to suicide) of Indian Penal Code (IPC) at Georgetown police station.

Subsequently, Anand Giri and two others were arrested. They were produced before the court of the chief judicial magistrate (CJM) on September 22 and remanded to judicial custody for 14 days.

Later, on the recommendation of the state government, the investigation was handed over to the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI).

After 60 days of investigation, the CBI submitted charge sheet on November 20, 2021, stating that Narendra Giri was under “grave mental trauma” because of his estranged disciple Anand Giri and two others that he ended his life to “avoid defamation and insult”.

On November 11, the special judge rejected the bail application of Anand Giri saying that as per the case diary, the witnesses had, by and large, supported the prosecution.

  • Balbeer Giri to be anointed successor to Narendra Giri in accordance with late Mahant’s wishes

    Express News Service

LUCKNOW: Shri Panchayati Akhara Niranjani, to which late Mahant Narendra Giri belonged, has decided to anoint Balbeer Giri, disciple of the late seer, as his successor at the Shri Mutth Baghambari Gaddi.

The Akhara has taken the decision to honour the last wish of Mahant Narendra Giri, president, Akhil Bharatiya Akhara Parishad (ABAP), who was found dead in mysterious circumstances as his body was spotted hanging from a ceiling fan in the room of his Muthh by his disciples on September 20. The Niranajani Akhara has decided to perform the coronation of Balbeer Giri as peethhadheeshwar of Shree Muthh Baghambari Gaddi  on the ‘shodashi,’ the 16th day ritual of the late seer on October 5.

However, Balbeer Giri will have to get approval for all the major decisions pertaining to the Muthh by ‘panch parmeshwar,’ a five-member administrative body. In fact, the decision to anoint Balbeer Giri was taken in accordance with the last will of the late Mahant and his alleged suicide note recovered from the spot where his body was found hanging. Mahant Narendra Giri not only declared Balbeer Giri as his successor in the ‘will’ done on June 4, 2020 but also made the same wish in the suicide note as well.

“As desired by Maharaj Ji (Narendra Giri) in his last will, we have named Balbeer Giri as his successor. He had also mentioned his decision in the suicide note and we have seen it in the video recorded by Maharaj Ji before committing suicide,” said Mahant Ravindra Puri, general secretary of Niranjani Akhara. It may be recalled that initially both the Niranajani Akhara and the Akhil BharatiyaAkhara Parishad had rejected the suicide theory and the note recovered from the spot. They had even refused to anoint Balbeer Giri as the late seer’s successor saying the Akhara Parishad would decide on the issue after September 25. Puri said that senior seers of all 13 Akharas under ABAP, respected individuals of society and officials of the district administration would be invited for the coronation ceremony on October 5.

After his anointment as peethhadheeshwar of Shree Muthh Baghambari Gaddi, Balbeer Giri would also become head Mahant of Bade Hanuman temple at Sangam. Balbeer Giri is one of Mahant Narendra Giri’s most beloved disciples for 15 years. He hails from Uttarakhand and had left his family in the year 2005 taking Sanyas. He was given Diksha by Narendra Giri at Haridwar and is looking after the Bilkeshwar Mahadev temple there.

Shri Panchayati Akhara Niranjani is the parental organisation of Baghambari Gaddi Math, and since Mahant Narendra Giri was also the secretary of the Akhara (besides Ravindra Puri), the ‘Panch Parmeshwar’ — a body constituting prominent seers of the Akhara — has the responsibility to appoint the successor of a mahant or peethhadheeshvar.

The state government recommended the probe by central investigation agency to ascertain the cause of the death of Mahant who allegedly committed suicide fearing disrepute and maligning of his image by one of his disciples Anand Giri.

Meanwhile, Prayagraj police have arrested three persons including Anand Giri, Adya Tiwari, head priest of Bade Hanumanji temple and Tiwari’s son Sandeep as all three were mentioned in the alleged suicide note left behind by the late Mahant who had held the three responsible for pushing him to commit suicide.

On Wednesday afternoon, Anand Giri and Adya Tiwari were produced in the court of the Chief Judicial Magistrate (CJM) of Prayagraj and the court sent them into 14-day judicial custody. It is believed that the decision of the state government to recommend CBI probe came following a demand by the saint’s community and also a few PILs filed in Allahabad High Court subject to their admission.

In another development, the guard deployed in the security of the late Mahant was removed and a departmental probe was issued against him.
