  • Seven people killed after bus crashes into ditch in Uttarakhand’s Nainital

    NAINITAL: At least seven people, including five women, one man, and one child, were killed after a bus coming from Haryana crashed into a ditch in Nainital district, an official said on Monday.

    So far 28 people have been rescued and further rescue operations are underway, a State Disaster Response Force (SDRF) official said.

    The bodies of the deceased have been recovered and handed over to the civil police by the SDRF, they said.

    According to the officials, the Disaster Control Room in Nainital notified SDRF on Sunday that a bus thought to be carrying 30 to 33 people had crashed into a ditch at Nalni on Kaladhungi Road.

    As per the instructions of Commandant SDRF Manikant Mishra, SDRF rescue teams from Post Rudrapur, Nainital, and Khairna immediately left for the spot for rescue.

    After reaching the spot, it was found that there were 33 people on the said bus that came from Hisar, Haryana, to visit Nainital. The bus went out of control at the spot and crashed into a ditch about 200 metres deep, the officials said.

    The SDRF rescue team reached the spot and conducted a joint rescue operation with the NDRF, local police, and other rescue units. 26 injured people aboard the bus were rescued and taken to the hospital for treatment in the pitch dark and extremely adverse conditions of the night.

  • Uttarakhand gets country’s largest aromatic garden in Nainital district

    DEHRADUN: The research wing of Uttarakhand forest department on Sunday inaugrated the biggest aromatic garden of India in Lalkuan of Nainital district. Established in an area of over 3 acre, the garden has 140 different species of aromatic species from across India.

    2002-batch Indian Forest Service officer Sanjiv Chaturvedi, who heads the research wing of the state forest department said, “Our whole team has worked hard fir over three years to see the fruition of this project. Plants were source from all over India followed by propagation efforts. I congratulate the entire team for this accomplishment.”

    The project was initiated in the year 2018-19 after approval of the Research Advisory Committee in June 2018 with objective of conservation of various aromatic species, to create awareness about these species, promote further research about these species and to link it with livelihood.

    Veena Rao, who has been working in the field of aromatica and medicinal plants for over two decades now said, “As a consultant, with the help of the state forest department we are planning to expand the garden to 45 hectares. Next phase involves developing a conservation and training center where the farmers can learn to grow and con serve the species which jane commercial viability.”

    The project has been funded under CAMPA (Compensatory Afforestation Fund Management and Planning Authority) scheme of the central government. Lalkuan was selected as the site because it is known for perpetual problem of foul smell due to the stench that comes from certain industrial units.

    The aromatic garden has a Tulsi vatika which contains more than 20 species of Tulsi, including Rama Tulsi, Shyam Tulsi, Van Tulsi, Kapoor Tulsi as well as African, Italian and Thai Tulsi.

    Aromatic garden has 8 different sections, apart from Tulsi Vatika- aromatic leaves ( Lemon balm, Rosemary, Kapoor and various mint species), aromatic flowers ( Chameli, Mogra, Rajnigandha, Kewda); aromatic trees (Chandan, Neem Chameli, Naglingam, Parijat); aromatic rhizomes (Aama Haldi, Kali Haldi); aromatic seeds ( Kasturi Bhindi, Badi ilachyi, Timur, Ajwain); aromatic grasses (Lemon grass, Java grass, Khas grass); aromatic bulbs (Red ginger, Sand ginger) and aromatic roots (Pattharchur,Vach) . 

    The garden also includes Chandan from South India, Agarwood from North east, kewada from Coastal areas and Parijat from Tarai Zone, apart from Neem Chameli, Hazari Mogra, Sontaka, Cahmeli, Raat ki rani, Din ka raja and Anant are some of the most fragrant popular species present in the aromatic garden.

    It also has nine different species of jasmine, four different species of four different species of haldi and three different species of ginger. The extracts of these aromatic plants are used in cosmetics for flavouring and fragrance purposes. Likewise, these plants are of great utility in spices, pesticides and repellents making.

  • 34 dead as rain batters Uttarakhand, maximum casualties from Nainital

    As many as 34 people have died due to incessant rains in Uttarakhand, out of which maximum casualties are from the Nainital district.

    CM Pushkar Singh Dhami said the death toll due to rain-related incidents has reached 34 while five persons are still missing. He announced a compensation of Rs 4 lakh to the next of kin of the deceased. 

    Those who lost their houses will be given Rs 1.9 lakhs, the CM announced.

    The NDRF has deployed 15 rescue teams to evacuate people from flood-hit areas. The rescue teams have evacuated more than 300 stranded people from Udham Singh Nagar district and other flood-affected areas.

    “Rescue operation is in progress and so far, teams have evacuated more than 300 stranded persons from Udham Singh Nagar district and other flood-affected areas,” an NDRF spokesperson said.

    He said while six teams are deployed in Udham Singh Nagar, two teams each are stationed in Uttarkashi, Chamoli, and one team each in Dehradun, Pithoragarh, and Haridwar.

    “One team and a sub-team have been deployed in Nainital while one sub-team is placed at Almora,” the spokesperson said. The team in Uttarkashi has been stationed to “respond to any contingency and ensure safety of ‘yatris’ (travellers) of the Char Dham yatra which has been halted temporarily”, he added.

    The Indian Air Force (IAF) is also carrying out relief and rescue operations by deploying three Dhruv helicopters at Pantnagar.

    Earlier, CM Dhami conducted an aerial survey of areas affected due to heavy rainfall.

    According to the State Disaster Management Secretary, Uttarakhand has recorded more than 200mm of rainfall in the last 24 hours.

    An under-construction bridge, over a raging Chalthi River in Champawat, Uttarakhand has been washed away due to a rise in the water level caused by incessant rainfall in parts of Uttarakhand.
