The deceased, identified as Shivnarayan Satnami (55), suffered grievous injuries after being attacked by his son Khelandas with a spade in Devpur village under Nagri development block on Tuesday evening, a police official here said.

“Satnami succumbed to injuries at a private hospital here on Wednesday,” he said.

  • Will seek Interpol help to crack Dhanbad judge murder case: CBI to Jharkhand High Court

    By PTI

RANCHI: The Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) has petitioned before the Jharkhand High Court informing a bench that it will seek the help of Interpol to crack the Dhanbad judge murder case.

The agency informed a division bench of Chief Justice Ravi Ranjan and Justice Sujit Narayan Prasad on Friday that it has come across some digital evidence which needs to be verified from the WhatsApp headquarters in the US.

The CBI has already shot a letter to the Union Home Ministry for its approval to take help from Interpol, the court was informed.

In the course of proceedings, the bench was informed that WhatsApp chats have been gathered from the accused persons which indicates the involvement of more people in the conspiracy behind the death of Dhanbad district court judge Uttam Anand on July 28 last year.

A team of CBI sleuths will have to go to the headquarters of WhatsApp in the US and recover chat details to reach to the bottom of the conspiracy.

The court ordered the agency to furnish a status report on the matter and file an affidavit. The case will be heard again on October 14.

Earlier, WhatsApp representatives had appeared before the Jharkhand High Court through Supreme Court lawyer Kapil Sibal and assured the court of all cooperation in the investigation.

Last month, a special CBI court in Dhanbad had announced the quantum of punishment and sentenced an autorickshaw driver and another person to life imprisonment in connection with the murder of Anand.

Besides imprisonment till death, the bench slapped a fine of Rs 20,000 on both convicts under IPC Section 302 (murder).

The CBI judge had also sentenced the duo to seven years in jail and imposed Rs 10,000 fine on each under IPC Section 201 (causing disappearance of evidence of offence, giving false information to protect offender).

Both sentences will run concurrently. Anand was hit by a heavy autorickshaw on July 28 last year at Randhir Verma Chowk close to district court while he was jogging around 5.30 am. He died the same day.

CCTV camera footage showed that the judge was jogging on one side of a fairly wide road at Randhir Verma Chowk in Dhanbad when the three-wheeler veered towards him, hit him from behind and fled the scene.

An SIT was initially formed to probe the matter, but the Jharkhand government later handed over the case to the CBI.

  • BJP government misusing NIA to target Muslim leaders, says Karnataka PFI

    By Express News Service

MANGALURU: A day after NIA implicated the Popular Front of India (PFI) for the murder of BJP worker Praveen Nettaru, the PFI Karnataka State Committee on Wednesday accused the BJP government of misusing the NIA in order to target the leaders of the organisation on the pretext of investigating the Praveen Nettaru murder case.

“There have been several murder incidents in the state recently, including the serial killings in Dakshina Kannada district. The BJP government has not given any significance to the investigation of the murders of Arbaaz from Belagavi, Sameer Shahapur, Masood of Sullia, Fazil of Suratkal. Just the murder of rowdy sheeter Harsha from Shivamoga and Praveen Nettaru is glorified,” PFI state secretary AK Ashraf told reporters at a press meet here.

He said the preliminary investigation conducted by the local police into Harsh’s murder revealed that it was a fallout of a gang war while Praveen’s murder was due to local communal enmity. However, he alleged that Sangh Parivar activists were involved directly in the murder cases of Muslim youths in the state and accused the BJP government of following a biased approach.

Ashraf further alleged that there was a larger conspiracy behind handing over only the murder cases of BJP workers to NIA. “It is clear that they have misused NIA. A Muslim youth accused in the recent stabbing incident in Shivamoga also has been booked under UAPA, which is an example of how the BJP is misusing investigative agencies like the NIA,” he said.

Ashraf termed the NIA raids on the houses and offices of the leaders of Muslim organisations as misuse of constitutional institutions and harmful to democracy.

“The BJP government has been executing massive campaigns against its staunch ideological opponent – PDI – to cover up its administrative failures. But so far it has not been able to provide legal evidence against the constitutionally functioning PFI. We cannot be intimated by such threats. The BJP government should immediately stop targetting Muslim leaders using NIA failing which the organisation will launch legal and democratic struggles across the state,” he threatened.

    By PTI
CHHATARPUR: Police have arrested a 63- year-old college professor for allegedly electrocuting to death her doctor husband over a domestic dispute in Madhya Pradesh’s Chhatarpur city, officials said on Sunday.

The incident took place on April 29 following which she allegedly tried to mislead the police by saying that her 65-year-old husband, a renowned physician, died after being unwell for a long time, they said.

The woman was arrested on Saturday after she admitted before police that she killed her husband, Deputy Superintendent of Police Shashank Jain said.

“We arrested the accused, a Chemistry professor with the Government Maharaja Post Graduate College here, on Saturday,” Superintendent of Police Sachin Sharma said.

The official said the probe into the case suggests she doubted her husband’s character, and due to this the couple used to have frequent fights.

Jain said during questioning, the woman told the police that on April 29, she mixed sleeping pills in her husband’s food and after he fell unconscious, she electrocuted him with a live wire.

Earlier, she did not inform the police immediately about the incident and cooked up a story that since she and her son were unwell, they rushed to Jhansi in a private car for treatment on April 30 morning, police said.

She lodged a police complaint on May 1, saying her husband was unwell for a long time and died on the night of April 29, they said, adding that she came under the police scanner as she approached them two days after the incident.

“After extensive questioning, she finally admitted that she killed her husband,” Jain said.

According to police, the couple used to have frequent quarrels and the doctor once complained to them that his wife had locked him in a bathroom at their home.

A mentally challenged son of the couple lived with them, Jain added.
