  • Elgar case accused activist Gonsalves suffering from dengue, lawyer tells Mumbai court

    MUMBAI: Activist Vernon Gonsalves, an accused in the Elgar Parishad-Maoist links case, is suffering from dengue, his lawyer on Thursday informed a special court, which is hearing his plea for temporary bail on medical grounds.

    He has been admitted to the state-run J J Hospital in Mumbai and put on oxygen support, the lawyer said.

    As per his lawyer, the 65-year-old activist was also suspected to be suffering from pneumonia.

    Gonsalves’s plea for temporary bail on medical grounds is pending before the special NIA (National Investigation Agency) court.

    During the hearing on the plea before the court on Thursday, the lawyer told the court his client is suffering from dengue fever, a mosquito-borne disease.

    Hospital authorities confirmed the development. Gonsalves was arrested by the Pune police under the Unlawful Activities (Prevention) Act after raids at residences and offices of several activists in connection with the case.

    The police had claimed provocative speeches made at the ‘Elgar Parishad’ conclave on December 31, 2017, were responsible for the caste violence around Bhima-Koregaon village in Pune district the next day during an event organised to commemorate the 200th anniversary of the battle of Bhima Koregaon.

    One person was killed and several others were injured in the violence.

    The case, in which over a dozen activists and academicians have been named accused, was later taken over by NIA.

  • Cyrus Mistry cremated in Mumbai

    MUMBAI: Former Tata Sons chairman Cyrus Mistry, who died in a car accident, was cremated in Mumbai on Tuesday.

    The last rites were performed as per Hindu customs in an electric crematorium at Worli in central Mumbai.

    Mistry, 54, who headed the salt-to-software conglomerate Tata Sons from 2012-16 before an unceremonious exit, and his friend Jahangir Pandole were killed in a road accident in the neighbouring Palghar district of Maharashtra on Sunday afternoon.

    Mistry was returning from a visit to Udvada in south Gujarat, which is the holiest place for people following the Zoroastrian faith.

    His mortal remains, decorated with white flowers, were brought from the J J Hospital and kept at the Worli crematorium since Tuesday morning for friends, relatives and well-wishers to pay their last respects.

    Members of the Parsi community, business leaders and politicians were among those who attended the cremation.

    Cyrus Mistry’s elder brother Shapoor Mistry, father-in-law and senior lawyer Iqbal Chagla, industrialists Anil Ambani and Ajit Gulabchand and NCP MP Supriya Sule were present at the crematorium.

    On Sunday, the Mercedes car in which Cyrus Mistry and Pandole were travelling hit a divider on a bridge over the Surya river in Palghar district.

  • Drugs worth Rs 1,400 cr seized near Mumbai; chemistry post-graduate among five held

    MUMBAI: Mumbai police seized more than 700 kilograms of mephedrone worth Rs 1,400 crore following a raid at a drug manufacturing unit at Nalasopara in Palghar district, and arrested five persons, officials said on Thursday.

    The Anti-Narcotics Cell (ANC) of the Mumbai crime branch conducted the raid at the unit located in Nalasopara (west) on Wednesday and recovered the contraband that was meant to be supplied to drug peddlers in Mumbai and its neighbouring areas, an official said.

    The main accused in the case is a post-graduate in organic chemistry, who got the formula of producing mephedrone through experiments, he said, adding that one of the other four arrested accused is a woman.

    “The raid was carried out based on specific inputs, which the ANC’s Worli team had received after the arrest of a drug peddler from Govandi, a suburb in Mumbai, in March this year. Mephedrone weighing 250 grams had been recovered from him at that time,” he said.

    During his interrogation, the ANC officials learnt that some more persons were involved in the illegal activity, following which they arrested the woman and one more person, and seized 2.760 kg of mephedrone.

    Continuing its probe into the supply chain, Mumbai police on Tuesday arrested one more accused and nabbed the main accused a day later following the raid at his Nalasopara unit.

    “The ANC team recovered 701.740 kg mephedrone valued at Rs 1,403 crore from the accused,” said Datta Nalawade, Deputy Commissioner of Police (ANC), in a press conference.

    During the probe, it came to light that the main accused himself was manufacturing the banned drug, he said.

    “The main accused is a 52-year-old man, who holds a post-graduate degree in organic chemistry. After experimenting with various chemicals, he found out the formula of producing mephedrone,” he said, adding that he was producing “high quality” substance.

    Police are investigating the whole supply chain and the financial trails of the drug traffickers, he said.

    “Wholesalers in the drug trade used to contact him for mephedrone and he was not selling the banned substance less than 25 kg in quantity,” he said.

    The accused person was using social media platforms, calling apps for drug peddling and supply, he said.

    Of the total five accused, four were arrested in Mumbai, while one person was held in Nalasopara, the official said, adding that various angles were being probed in the case. This is one of the biggest drug hauls by the city police in recent times, he said.

  • No one can insult Mumbai, Marathi folk: Shinde on Governor’s remark; Uddhav demands apology

    MUMBAI: Maharashtra Governor Bhagat Singh Koshyari’s comments that “Mumbai will have no money” if the Gujaratis and Rajasthanis were to leave triggered a massive controversy on Saturday, forcing Chief Minister Eknath Shinde to state that he disagreed with the governor.

    As Opposition leaders slammed Koshyari and sought apology from him, the governor said his comments were misconstrued.

    Koshyari made the controversial comments during a function to name a chowk (intersection) in suburban Andheri on Friday evening.

    ”I tell people here that if Gujaratis and Rajasthanis are removed from Maharashtra, especially from Mumbai and Thane, you will be left with no money and Mumbai will not be a financial capital,” he said.

    As the comments drew widespread condemnation, Koshyari said on Saturday that the statement was misconstrued, and asked political parties not to create a controversy.

    There was no question of belittling the contribution of Marathi-speaking people and “lauding one community does not mean insulting another,” he said.

    Shiv Sena president Uddhav Thackeray demanded an apology from Koshyari.

    The former chief minister, whose relations with Koshyari were often strained while in office, accused the governor of “dividing” Hindus living in Mumbai and Thane.

    Holding a press conference, Thackeray said, “The hatred that the governor harbours in his mind against the Marathi people has inadvertently come out.

    “Time has come to decide whether to send Koshyari back home or to jail. In the last three years, he has insulted Marathi-speaking people despite staying in Maharashtra. Now with these comments, he has brought disrespect to the governor’s post,” the Sena president said.

    Amid the backlash, Chief Minister Shinde, leader of the rebel Shiv Sena faction, said he disagreed with Koshyari’s remarks.

    Talking to reporters at Malegaon, Shinde said, “We don’t agree with Koshyari’s remarks. It’s his personal view. He has now issued a clarification. He occupies a constitutional post and should take care that his actions do not insult others. The Marathi community’s hard work has contributed to the development and progress of Mumbai. No one can insult Mumbai and Marathi people,” he added.

    Speaking in Dhule, Deputy Chief Minister and BJP leader Devendra Fadnavis said Marathi-speaking people played a major role in the development and growth of Maharashtra.

    “Even in the industrial sector, Marathi-speaking people have made global strides. We don’t agree with the governor’s remarks,” the former chief minister said.

    State NCP president Jayant Patil said it was unfortunate that the governor has “scant respect for the Marathi-speaking working class due to whose hard work Mumbai progressed and developed.”

    State Congress chief Nana Patole said Koshyari’s remarks were outrageous and he had always “insulted Maharashtra through his actions and words.”

    “The Centre should seek Koshyari’s resignation and send him to Gujarat or Rajasthan,” he said.

    Leader of Opposition in the Assembly Ajit Pawar said the governor shouldn’t create unnecessary controversies.

  • Maharashtra crisis: BJP to hold meetings in Mumbai to decide next course of action

    MUMBAI: The BJP, which is expected to stake claim to form the next government in Maharashtra soon following the resignation of Uddhav Thackeray as the chief minister, will be holding a series of meetings here on Thursday to decide the future course of action, where party’s state in-charge C T Ravi will remain present, party sources said.

    Ravi, who has arrived in Mumbai on Thursday morning, will attend a meeting at ‘Sagar’ bungalow, the official residence of Leader of Opposition Devendra Fadnavis with senior party leaders, including its state chief Chandrakant Patil. The BJP has also asked all of its MLAs to remain in Mumbai city till the next steps are taken, they said.

    Following Thackeray’s resignation on Wednesday night, Chandrakant Patil had said that Fadnavis and rebel Shiv Sena leader Eknath Shinde, who claims to have the support of 39 rebel Sena legislators and 11 independent MLAs as well as small parties, would decide the next court of action.

    “While BJP has 106 MLAs of its own and support of some 10 independent MLAs, it will have to undertake a lot of deliberations and negotiations for seat sharing formula with rebel Sena MLAs and independents. It will take some time, but a clear picture would emerge by Friday,” Patil had said.

    Thackeray had resigned soon after the Supreme Court refused to stay Governor B S Koshyari’s direction to his government to take a floor test in the Assembly on Thursday.

    His resignation capped over a week-long drama of resort politics, where rebel Shiv Sena MLAs led Shinde camped in luxury hotels and hopped on chartered jets from Mumbai to Surat and Guwahati, before landing in Goa on Wednesday night. Fadnavis is expected to make a comeback as chief minister after holding the post from 2014 to 2019.

  • Nepal plane crash: Driver says he had dropped Tripathi family at Mumbai airport two days back

    THANE: For 29-year-old Ashish Sawant, it came as a big shock when he heard that four members of the Tripathi family, for whom he works as a driver here, were on board the plane that crashed in Nepal on Sunday, as recalled dropping them to the Mumbai airport just two days back.

    “I have lost everything,” he said with tears rolling down his cheeks even as the fate of the Tripathi family and 18 others on board the ill-fated plane remained unclear as bad weather made it difficult to locate the aircraft that went missing in the mountainous region of Nepal minutes after taking off on Sunday morning.

    According to the police here, Ashok Kumar Tripathi (54), his wife Vaibhavi (Bandekar) Tripathi, their 22-year-old son Dhanush and 15-year-old daughter Ritika were on board the Nepalese plane.

    Sawant, who resides at Diva in Thane, said he has been working as the Tripathi family’s driver for the last seven years and used to drop Vaibhavi Tripathi to her office in Bandra-Kurla Complex (BKC) in Mumbai.

    “It was just two days back that I had dropped the family to the Mumbai international airport and today I received this shocking news,” he said.

    After learning that the Tripathi family was travelling in the plane in Nepal, he rushed to their house in Rustomjee Athena apartment located in Balkum area of the city, to enquire about them.

    He also said that it was just two months back they had purchased a new car.

    The watchman of the building, 55-year-old Sunil Chalke, said the Tripathi family members were very loving.

    “It is sad that they part of this tragedy,” he said.

    The turboprop Twin Otter 9N-AET plane belonging to Tara Air took off at 10.15 am from Pokhara in Nepal to Jomsom, another popular tourist town.

    The aircraft lost contact with the control tower 15 minutes later, according to an airline spokesperson.

    The missing plane could possibly be located on Monday, officials have said.

    RCB had defeated table-toppers Gujarat Titans by eight wickets in their final league match to keep their hopes alive for a playoff, which depended on the clash between DC and MI.

    Delhi needed to win the match to make it to the playoffs but they came a cropper against bottom-placed MI.

    RCB skipper Faf Du Plessis said the entire team watched the match together and was cheering each and every move made by the Mumbai team.

    “It was so good, I think first of all it was really nice to see that everyone was here from the start of the game, so we watched it together,” he said.

    “We were all shouting for every wicket that Mumbai got and then when they are chasing every boundary. It’s good for everyone to watch together and then the celebration towards the end was awesome to be a part of.”

    RCB will now take on third-placed Lucknow Super Giants in the Eliminator at Edens Gardens on May 25.

    “The last game we played we felt almost like we played our best game of cricket of this campaign so far and that is how you want to enter the knockout stages, so we needed someone to do us a favour and Mumbai did that for us, we are very thankful for that,” Du Plessis said.

    “Obviously now the work starts again, and we get our work mode back on.”

    RCB has never ever won the IPL and allrounder Glenn Maxwell feels the team is very close to achieving that dream.

    MUMBAI: “Thank you, Mumbai, we will remember this one,” said Virat Kohli after Royal Challengers Bangalore sneeked into the playoffs following Mumbai Indians’ thrilling five-wicket win over Delhi Capitals in their last game of the IPL here.

    On Saturday, MI chased down a victory target of 160 in 19.1 overs to knockout Delhi from the competition and paved the way for RCB’s entry as the fourth and final team in the knockout stage.

    “It was unbelievable. The emotions in the changing room were unbelievable. Thank you, Mumbai, we will remember this one,” Kohli said in a release.

    RCB had defeated table-toppers Gujarat Titans by eight wickets in their final league match to keep their hopes alive for a playoff, which depended on the clash between DC and MI.

    Delhi needed to win the match to make it to the playoffs but they came a cropper against bottom-placed MI.

    RCB skipper Faf Du Plessis said the entire team watched the match together and was cheering each and every move made by the Mumbai team.

    “It was so good, I think first of all it was really nice to see that everyone was here from the start of the game, so we watched it together,” he said.

    “We were all shouting for every wicket that Mumbai got and then when they are chasing every boundary. It’s good for everyone to watch together and then the celebration towards the end was awesome to be a part of.”

    RCB will now take on third-placed Lucknow Super Giants in the Eliminator at Edens Gardens on May 25.

    “The last game we played we felt almost like we played our best game of cricket of this campaign so far and that is how you want to enter the knockout stages, so we needed someone to do us a favour and Mumbai did that for us, we are very thankful for that,” Du Plessis said.

    “Obviously now the work starts again, and we get our work mode back on.”

    RCB has never ever won the IPL and allrounder Glenn Maxwell feels the team is very close to achieving that dream.

  • Loudspeaker row: Mumbai police issue notices to 100 people, including MNS leaders

    MUMBAI: The Mumbai police have issued notices to at least 100 people, including MNS leaders Nitin Sardesai and Bala Nandgaonkar, under section 149 of the CrPC for preventing cognisable offences, an official said on Tuesday.

    The move comes after MNS chief Raj Thackeray at a rally in Maharashtra’s Aurangabad city on May 1 asked people to play Hanuman Chalisa outside mosques from May 4 if loudspeakers there were not removed.

    According to the office of the Maharashtra director general of police (DGP), preventive action has so far been taken against more than 15,000 people in the state under various sections of the CrPC and the Maharashtra Police Act.

    The DGP’s office also said that notices under CrPC section 149 were issued against 13,054 people across the state, including MNS workers.

    Considering the law and order situation in the state capital Mumbai, the city police have issued notices under the CrPC section 149 to at least 100 people under zone 5, which includes Dadar, Matunga, Shivaji Park and Dharavi areas.

    The Shivaji Park police issued notices to 12 people, including MNS functionaries Nitin Sardesai, Bala Nandgaokar, Sandeep Deshpande, Sukumar Killedar and others.

    Besides, 15 people were issued notices in Dadar area, the official said.

    The central Mumbai is considered a stronghold of the MNS, and police are taking all precautions to avoid any untoward situation in the area, he said.

  • 12 passengers injured as SpiceJet’s Mumbai-Durgapur flight faces severe turbulence

    NEW DELHI: At least 12 passengers on SpiceJet’s Mumbai-Durgapur flight were injured on Sunday when it faced severe turbulence during descent, sources said.

    The injured passengers have been taken to hospital, they said.

    A SpiceJet spokesperson said, “On May 1, SpiceJet Boeing B737 aircraft operating flight SG-945 from Mumbai to Durgapur encountered severe turbulence during descent which unfortunately resulted in injuries to a few passengers.”

    Immediate medical assistance was provided upon the aircraft’s arrival in Durgapur, the spokesperson said.

    “SpiceJet expresses its regret at this unfortunate incident and is providing all possible medical help to the injured,” the spokesperson added.
