  • Uddhav Thackeray: Uddhav Thackeray tries to soothe frayed nerves as Congress fumes over Sanjay Raut’s remarks on Lok Sabha seats

Amid a row over Sanjay Raut’s remarks that Shiv Sena (UBT) would contest 23 of the 48 seats in upcoming Lok Sabha elections in Maharashtra, party chief Uddhav Thackeray on Saturday said he won’t do anything that would hurt the MVA alliance. His remarks are seen as a snub to Raut whose “23 seats for Shiv Sena” statement ruffled many feathers in Congress, an ally in the Maha Vikas Aghadi.

Talking to reporters here, Thackeray said the ticket distribution will take place smoothly and that he has spoken to Congress president Mallikarjun Kharge and party leader Rahul Gandhi.

A day before, Raut had caused a flutter saying Shiv Sena (UBT) would contest 23 of the 48 Lok Sabha seats in Maharashtra. He had also said the seat-sharing talks with Congress would have to “start from zero” as the latter had “not won any seat’” in the previous elections, a statement drawing a sharp response from state Congress leaders.

“I will not do anything that will hurt the MVA. So I will not pay attention to those who say anything. Until the Congress president speaks on this issue (seat-sharing), till that time, neither I nor anyone from my side will comment,” Thackeray said.

The Shiv Sena (UBT) chief also said the ticket distribution will take place smoothly. “The discussion between the Sena (UBT) and Nationalist Congress Party (Sharad Pawar faction) has been smooth,” he added. Thackeray also said efforts are on to have a joint meeting with MVA members- Shiv Sena (UBT), the Congress, and NCP (Sharad Pawar faction)- and Prakash Amedbkar-led Vanchit Bahujan Aghadi.

While Shiv Sena (UBT) and VBA have already forged an alliance, no call was yet taken on the induction of the Ambedkar-led outfit in the MVA fold and any electoral tie-up.

In the 2019 Lok Sabha elections, the Shiv Sena (Undivided) won 18 of the 23 seats it had contested in Maharashtra while its ally BJP bagged 23 of 25 constituencies. The NCP (undivided) emerged victorious on 4 seats while Congress’ tally was just one seat.

  • Backstreet Boys deliver ‘larger than life’ performance in Delhi-NCR

    By PTI

NEW DELHI: Long queues, a wait of several hours and the humid weather all felt worth it to the fans of Backstreet Boys as the popular American band wrapped the India leg of their DNA World Tour with an exhilarating performance in the Delhi-NCR region.

After a gig in Mumbai, the boy band kept their date with Delhi-NCR fans intact with a performance spanning two hours at the Airia Mall in Gurugram on Friday.

Fans from all age groups, including teenagers, those in their mid-20s and 30s, and even the elderly, gathered to witness the concert of the band that dominated the music scene with numerous global hits in the 1990s and early 2000s.

The performance was scheduled to start at 7.30 pm but was delayed by a couple of minutes, leaving many desperate.

Soon the stage came alive with a sound of thunder and flickering of strobe light.

The crowd erupted in joy as the giant screen at the back of the stage displayed the names of the iconic quintet, comprising Nick Carter, Howie Dorough, AJ McLean, Brian Littrell and Kevin Richardson.

Backstreet Boys were indeed back! The group, who last visited India in 2010, got down to business quickly, starting with “I Wanna Be With You” which left the crowd of over 12,000 exhilarated.

The first set included the songs that made the group a household name in America, — “The Call”, “Get Down (You’re The One For Me)” and “Don’t Want You Back”.

With their groovy and synchronised dance steps, the band proved age is just a number for them.

On multiple occasions, the quintet, dressed in all-black attire, would pause, only for the crowd to complete the lyrics.

As the first set ended, Littrel addressed the Delhi-NCR crowd with a ‘namaste’.

“I know it is not our first time in Delhi and it won’t be the last,” the singer said.

“It is because of each of you tonight that Backstreet Boys still exist.” The singer promised a trip down memory lane for the fans who have been following the group since it was formed in 1993.

What followed was the bevvy of soothing and soulful tracks — ranging from “Incomplete”, “More than That”, “Crazy for You”, “Alive” and “Shape of My Heart”.

During their entire performance, the group changed outfits on multiple occasions.

Carter took note of the humid weather and took off his jacket on the stage, leading to huge screams from the fans.

“Someone should have told me that it was going to be so hot tonight and that I should not have worn a jacket,” he said.

The singer asked the crowd to chant with him ‘Backstreet’s Back’ to show their love for the group.

In the next set, the band performed more favourites, including “Quit Playing Games” and “As Long as You Love”, for the crowd.

After performing a few more tracks and changing outfits once more, the group gathered on the stage to reminisce about starting the band 30 years ago.

“We all grew up together. You guys have started your families. We got three generations in here tonight.

We definitely have started our families, we’ve a lot of Backstreet babies. We want to thank you for being part of the Backstreet family for 30 years now,” Richardson said.

It was the singer’s maiden visit to the country.

Mclean said that it has been a crazy ride. “How about 30 more years? There won’t be much dancing though,” he added.

The band members revealed that they were teenagers when they came together to form the group; Mclean was 14, Littrell was 18, Dorough was 19, Carter was 12, and Richardson was the oldest at 21.

For the final set, the band performed a fusion mix of their all-time hit track “Everybody”, inviting the crowd’s loudest cheers.

More favourites such as “Don’t Go Breaking My Heart”, “Chances” and “No Place”, followed.

After their final act, the band exited the stage, leaving many fans to wonder if this was it.

Some waited, while some made their way towards the exit.

But then the stage came alive once again. Backstreet Boys were not done yet.

Wearing silver outfits this time, the group performed one final song for the crowd — ‘Larger than Life’, accompanied by a spectacular fireworks display that outshone even the full moon.

  • Farmers, tribals marching towards Mumbai in support of demands enter Thane district

    By PTI

MUMBAI: Thousands of farmers and tribals marching towards Mumbai from Nashik district in North Maharashtra in support of their demands entered Thane district on Wednesday.

The protesters started their foot march from Dindori town in Nashik district, around 200km from Mumbai, on Sunday in support of their various demands, including an immediate financial relief of Rs 600 per quintal to onion growers, uninterrupted electricity supply for 12 hours and a waiver of agriculture loans.

The march, organised by the Communist Party of India (Marxist), has crossed Kasara town in Thane district located adjoining Mumbai, said CPI(M) MLA Vinod Nikole.

The protesters are likely to reach Mumbai on March 20, Nikole said.

The MLA said a delegation of Maharashtra ministers is slated to hold talks with representatives of the protesting cultivators.

The Maharashtra government on Monday announced an ex-gratia relief of Rs 300 per quintal to onion farmers severely affected by a steep fall in prices of the commodity.

Prices of the kitchen staple have crashed in Maharashtra, resulting in farmers getting very little for their produce.

Nashik district is a major hub of onion cultivation in the country.

  • 717 measles cases in Maharashtra so far this year, Mumbai worst-affected

    By PTI

MUMBAI: The number of measles cases reported in Maharashtra since the start of the year has reached 717, including 303 in Mumbai, the state health department said.

The viral infection, which mostly affects children, has claimed 14 lives so far, it said on Tuesday. In Mumbai alone, 10 deaths due to measles have been reported as of November 28, the official release said.

On Tuesday, Mumbai recorded five fresh measles cases and one suspected death, the city’s civic body said in a bulletin.

Since January, 70 cases of infection have been reported in Malegaon city in Nashik district and 48 in Bhiwandi near Mumbai. Mumbai has recorded 74 outbreaks so far this year.

If there are five suspected cases within a week of which more than two are confirmed by laboratory, then it is termed as an outbreak. Mumbai also recorded 11,390 suspected cases since January 1, 2022.

The state had recorded 1,337 confirmed cases in 2019, 2,150 in 2020 and 3,668 last year, as per official data. Of the 14 patients who died due to measles this year, only one had taken vaccine, the statement said.

Four of the patients who died were infants in the 0-11 months age group, eight were in 12-24 months age group and two were adults in 25-60 age group. Six of the deceased were female.

Mumbai reported 10 deaths since the start of the year, Bhiwandi three and Vasai-Virar area one. A special inoculation drive is being undertaken amid the rising cases. Chief Minister Eknath Shinde is regularly reviewing the situation, the release added.

  • Mumbai measles outbreak: lack of vaccination, poor living conditions to blame, say health officials

    By PTI

MUMBAI: Even as the covid-19 cases are going down steadily in Mumbai, it is struggling to control the outbreak of measles among children as eight deaths and 184 confirmed cases have been so far been reported in the city, as per civic officials.

Poor living conditions, big family sizes, lack of proper health services, sanitation facilities and nutrition, poor immunity, missed vaccine doses and reluctance for the inoculation are some of the major reasons for the outbreak of the disease in the city, they told PTI.

Mumbai has seen a multi-fold rise in the cases of measles this year as against 25 cases recorded in 2020 and nine last year, as per civic data.

The metropolis has witnessed the outbreak of the disease when the government has targeted to eradicate it by 2023 end.

Earlier, Mumbai had reported three deaths due to measles in 2019, one death each was recorded in Nagpur, Chandrapur and Akola in 2020, while Thane and Mumbai had reported one death each in 2021, as per a state bulletin.

If there are five suspected cases of an infection in a week, of which more than two have been confirmed in laboratory testing, then it is termed as an outbreak, Maharashtra health surveillance officer Pradip Awate told PTI.

Measles is one of the leading causes of diarrhoea, pneumonia and lowering of immunity, among other conditions, and leads to children getting stuck in the vicious cycle of various diseases and malnutrition, according to health experts.

As per the state bulletin, the health department is conducting house-to-house surveillance for measles and special vaccination sessions are being arranged on a campaign mode.

This year Maharashtra reported 503 cases of measles till November 17, compared to 153 in 2019, 193 in 2020 and 92 cases last year, according to the bulletin.

Outside Mumbai too, the outbreak of the viral disease has been witnessed in a few places like Bhiwandi town in neighbouring Thane district with seven cases and Malegaon in Nashik district reporting five cases, it said.

ALSO READ: Centre deploys high-level team to Mumbai to manage outbreak of measles

A Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) official said due to the pandemic in 2020 and 2021, the regular inoculation programmes were affected and as a result, the vaccination against measles was also hampered.

Hence a large number of children either missed the first or second doses.

“We have now undertaken a three-point programme to control the measles outbreak,” BMC’s executive health officer Dr Mangala Gomare said.

This includes search of the suspected cases of measles, speedy immunisation of children who have missed a vaccine shot or not taken any dose and spreading awareness about the inoculation, she said.

“In a household survey of 0 to 2 years old children, it was found that about 20,000 children have missed either their first or second dose of the vaccine. We are organising additional sessions for them,” Dr Gomare said.

She said they would arrange 100-150 extra sessions of inoculation camps for the children who have missed the measles doses.

The official said they have already inoculated 10,000 children in the 0 to 2 years of age group and targeted to complete within a week’s time the vaccination of the remaining 10,000 kids in that age bracket group and 40,000 children up to 5 years of age, who have missed the vaccine doses for any reason.

This year, the cases suddenly started rising from the last week of September and the situation has now become alarming, BMC officials said.

The civic-run Kasturba Hospital added a special isolation ward following the outbreak in September.

The viral disease has spread to 17 localities in eight wards out of the total 24 civic in the city, BMC officials, adding that a few of the patients are on ventilator support.

The maximum spread of the infection is in M-east ward which includes areas like Govandi and Deonar, followed by L-ward comprising Kurla and Chunabhatti areas, they said.

The BMC has so far detected 2,900 suspected cases of measles with patients having common symptoms like fever and rashes.

“All the deaths are from the Muslim community and the areas where they were living are also dominated by the community,” a civic official said.

The reasons behind the measles outbreak in the slum-dominated M-east ward are poor living conditions and services, lack of sanitation facilities, poor immunity and nutritious value, said a civic doctor who has worked there.

There are also many fake doctors in the area who do not provide the right treatment to the patients, worsening the health issues, the health official said.

Mumbai’s biggest dumping ground is located in the M-east ward where most of the people are from the poor financial background.

They are engaged in informal occupations and the living conditions are not good, according to activists working in the area.

Srushti Jaitely, a therapist who also works for an NGO, said as per a 2009 report, the human development index of the area is 0.05 per cent, which she claimed is equivalent to the sub-Saharan countries.

“There is extreme poverty and a lot of vulnerability as the ward is situated on the periphery of the city. When the city was developing, the ward was accommodating dumping grounds, scrap yards and with time, people also came to settle in the area. A lot of people have been relocated there in the name of rehabilitation. Hence, the largest number of R and R (relocation and rehabilitation) colonies are in this ward,” Jaitely said.

After the outbreak of the disease, the BMC along with the Maharashtra and central governments swung into action and took multiple steps to contain the spread of the viral disease to other parts of the city.

The Union Health Ministry immediately sent a high-level multi-disciplinary team to Mumbai to take stock of the upsurge of measles cases in the city.

On November 17, Chief Minister Eknath Shinde also reviewed the measles outbreak situation and directed the BMC and the state health department officials to take help of religious leaders in spreading awareness about vaccination against the disease.

He also visited the Kasturba Hospital to take stock of the situation.

Acting on the high level team’s suggestion, the civic body has already called meetings with religious and community leaders as well as prominent people from the affected areas for spreading awareness about the disease and the immunisation, officials said.

The civic body is also giving two doses of vitamin A to suspected patients and they are being admitted to hospital or referred to a paediatrician, if necessary, they said.

Awate said the health department will take a weekly review of the situation in the state on Monday, and it has already undertaken necessary steps to contain the spread of the diseases including social mobilisation.

    By PTI

SURAT: City police seized fake currency notes with the face value of Rs 317 crore from various locations in Gujarat and Mumbai and arrested six persons, officials said on Tuesday.

The main accused, Vikas Jain, was picked up from Mumbai. He runs a courier firm with branches in different cities. The counterfeit currency notes were seized from various locations in Mumbai, Anand, Surat and Jamnagar.

The Fake Indian Currency Notes (FICN) in denominations of Rs 2,000 and Rs 500 as well as those of scrapped notes of Rs 500 and Rs 1,000 were seized after the recent arrest of one Hitesh Kotadiya, who was driving an ambulance with the fake currency having the face value of Rs 25.8 crore, the Surat (Rural) Police said in a release.

More than 28 units of the seized FICN had “Reverse Bank of India” and “movie shooting purpose only” printed on them, which the police said was meant to mislead authorities.

Officials of the Reserve Bank of India (RBI) and forensic experts have established the seizure as FICN, police said.

A First Information Report (FIR) was registered against the six persons under sections 489 (A)(B)(C) (traffic or use as genuine counterfeit currency notes), 406 (criminal breach of trust ), 420 (cheating), 201 (causing disappearance of evidence), and 120 (B) (criminal conspiracy) of the Indian Penal Code (IPC).

According to police, Jain supplied FICN to the accused persons. He runs the courier service with offices in Gujarat, Maharashtra, Madhya Pradesh and Delhi.

Jain used to get the fake banknotes printed in different cities in north India and transport them to Mumbai through his courier service.

He hid the fake currency at a godown in the Maharashtra capital, the release said. Police seized fake notes with a face value of Rs 227 crore of the total seizure from Mumbai alone.

The accused persons were passing off FICN as genuine banknotes and they had nothing to do with movie production, police said. All the six accused conspired to cheat companies which donated money to a trust, police said.
