The right-handed batsman achieved the feat against SunRisers Hyderabad at the MA Chidambaram Stadium during his 32 runs knock. He joined the likes of Virat Kohli, MS Dhoni and Gautam Gambhir with 4000 plus runs in the T20s as captain.Rohit sits at the fourth spot on the most run-getters list of the IPL. He has scored 5324 runs in 203 matches so far. India and RCB skipper Kohli is leading the chart with 5944 runs in 194 matches. Followed by Suresh Raina (5430 runs) and David Warner (5347).

Rohit also surpassed Dhoni to record the most sixes in the IPL by Indian batsmen. He pulled a short ball from Bhuvneshwar Kumar for a six over deep mid-wicket. Rohit has now smashed 217 sixes in the IPL while former India skipper Dhoni has 216 maximums under his belt.

Rohit first whacked a six in the third over and pulled a short one in the next over to achieve the milestone. The right-handed batsman also smashed two fours before he was dismissed by Vijay Shankar in the seventh over.

Pacer Trent Boult and spinner Rahul Chahar both picked three wickets each as Mumbai Indians registered an easy win over SRH on Saturday.

Mumbai Indians had scored 150/5, thanks to Kieron Pollard’s two sixes on the last two balls. In response, SRH was bundled out for 137 despite a flying start given by Jonny Bairstow.

  • Reefs are heart and soul of our oceans: Mumbai Indians skipper Rohit Sharma bats for ‘save the corals’

    By ANI
NEW DELHI: Mumbai Indians skipper Rohit Sharma is continuously taking up the causes related to nature and wildlife as he bats now for saving oceans.

In Mumbai Indians’ third game against SunRisers Hyderabad at the MA Chidambaram Stadium, Rohit walked on the field with his specially designed shoes showing coral reefs and a message “Save the corals” written on it. This is the third time that Rohit has supported the cause in the ongoing 14th edition of the IPL.

The opening batsman said reefs are the heart and souls of our oceans. He further said that protecting our oceans means protecting our future.

Taking to Twitter Rohit wrote, “Our reefs are the heart and souls of our oceans. Nothing makes me happier than a healthy reef. My love for the ocean cannot be put into words and saving it will forever be my cause.”

“I was afraid of the ocean at the start but as I learnt more about it and all the amazing marine life it houses and the massive role it plays for our survival, I fell in love instantly.”

“Even the tiniest change in our mindset, in our activities or in our understanding of what we can do to help will have a massive ripple effect on our environment. Protecting our oceans means protecting our future,” he added.

Rohit was spotted wearing spikes with “Save the Rhinos” art in the very first match of IPL 2021 and he continued to use his shoes as a canvas to highlight important wildlife and environmental issues in the match against Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR).

In the second game, he chose to raise awareness for a “Plastic Free Ocean”.

On Instagram, after Mumbai Indians’ match against RCB on April 9, Rohit talked about how making the world a better place is everyone’s responsibility and something that all need to work towards.

Rohit laid emphasis on saving our oceans from plastic waste through a piece of shoe art that showcased turtles in pristine blue waters. Much like his support for Rhino’s, Rohit has extended his platforms in the past to voice issues of marine plastic pollution.

Mumbai Indians defeated SunRisers Hyderabad by 13 runs on Saturday.

  • Will stick to my plans in coming matches: Mumbai Indians spinner Rahul Chahar

    By ANI
NEW DELHI: Mumbai Indians spinner Rahul Chahar said he will stick to his plans for the upcoming games at the MA Chidambaram Stadium after bagging seven wickets in the last two matches.

Mumbai Indians defeated SunRisers Hyderabad by 13 runs on Saturday. Chahar picked three wickets and dismantled the SRH’s middle-order.

Quinton de Kock and Rohit Sharma played knocks of 40 and 32, but SRH managed to maintain a stranglehold as Mumbai Indians were restricted to 150/5. In response, SRH was bundled out for 137 despite a flying start given by Jonny Bairstow. Jasprit Bumrah bowled economically and just gave 14 runs in his fours overs including a wicket while Trent Boult returned with the figures of 3-28.

Chahar went wicketless in the first game and then made a strong comeback against Kolkata Knight Riders as he scalped four wickets.

“I will stick to the same plan for the coming matches in Chennai and will try to pick as many wickets as possible. Chennai wicket helps spinners. Wickets are not in our hands but I will try to turn the ball from the right spot and put batsmen under pressure,” Chahar said in a video posted on IPL’s official website.

“There was some pressure in the second game as the first match was not so good for me. It was important for me to give the best performance in the second match and I don’t think there is any better wicket than this for spinners,” he added.

Chahar asked Anukul Roy about his last season’s spectacular catch against Rajasthan Royals.

Reflecting on that catch, Roy said: “It gives me confidence that I can take tough catches and now the normal catches look easy to me. But every catch is important in the match.”

Mumbai Indians will next take on Delhi Capitals at the MA Chidambaram Stadium on Tuesday.

  • IPL 2021: Jasprit Bumrah is one of the best bowlers in death overs, says Trent Boult

    By ANI
CHENNAI: After the 13-run win over SunRisers Hyderabad at the MA Chidambaram Stadium on Saturday, Mumbai Indians pacer Trent Boult lauded fellow seamer Jasprit Bumrah and said he is one of the best bowlers in the slog overs.

Quinton de Kock and Rohit Sharma played knocks of 40 and 32, but SRH managed to maintain a stranglehold as Mumbai Indians were restricted to 150/5. In response, SRH was bundled out for 137 despite a flying start given by Jonny Bairstow.

SRH needed 47 runs in the last five overs and Vijay Shankar whacked back to back sixes in Krunal Pandya’s third over to reduce the gap. But SRH was again put on the back foot when they lost two wickets in the 18th over and the team’s hopes were finally down when Jasprit Bumrah dismissed Shankar with 17 required off seven balls.

SRH collapsed from 129/5 to 137 in nine balls as Boult and Jasprit Bumrah denied the batsmen any chance of slogging in the death overs.

Bumrah bowled economically and just gave 14 runs in his fours overs including a wicket while Boult returned with the figures of 3-28. Spinner Rahul Chahar also bagged three wickets for MI.

“It’s great to see a guy like that operate. How clear he is with what he is doing with the ball throughout the whole spell. But at the death, I personally believe he is one of the best bowlers in the death overs. He makes my job a lot easier but it’s nice to be on the right side of those situations and hopefully, we can get a bit of momentum in the tournament,” Boult said at the post-match press conference.

“It’s hard to pin-point one performance there. A lot of credit to the whole side for hanging in there. We knew we were a few runs short of the par score. But we also knew that this is a pitch where you can fight. And you get a couple of wickets, you can really get back in the chase. I thought a couple of direct hits from Hardik (Pandya) and the three wickets from Rahul (Chahar) were important when we were bowling. And then Bumrah there, bowling his four overs for only 14 was pretty amazing,” he added.

New Zealand pacer further talked about the difference between the wickets in Mumbai and Chennai.

“The contrast between Wankhede and Chepauk Stadium is quite considerable. It looks like its swinging around nicely and it’s a perfect surface in Mumbai. Here as a pace bowler, you got to be extremely accurate. Key has really been our ability to bowl dot balls and keep pushing the run rate,” Boult said.

Boult also shared his views over their first-leg matches in Chennai.

“I think it’s very unique. It gives us a chance to settle at the venue. But the key would be to obviously read the conditions quickly as possible and make the most of them really. So, it’s a unique situation. We’ve got five here, 4 in Delhi, move around a little bit. But, I think especially in the first half of the tournament you obviously get on the right side of a couple of results and like I touched on earlier, it’s nice to get those couple of wins in the last two matches,” he said.

  • Chahar, Boult steer Mumbai Indians to 13-run win over Sunrisers Hyderabad

    By PTI
CHENNAI: Sunrisers Hyderabad’s middle-order continued to misfire as spinner Rahul Chahar and pacer Trent Boult fashioned Mumbai Indians to a 13-run win in their IPL match here on Saturday.

Defending 150, leg-spinner Chahar (3/19) stifled the middle-order before Boult (3/28) polished off the tail as SRH were bowled out for 137 in 19.4 overs.

Opting to bat, MI had a good start but Vijay Shankar and Mujeeb Ur Rahman claimed two wickets each as SRH stemmed the flow of runs in the middle overs.

However, Kieron Pollard managed to lift MI to 150 for 5 with the help of a 22-ball 35 which included two sixes of the last two balls of their innings.

Chasing 151 for a win, Jonny Bairstow smashed a 22-ball 35 to give SRH a rollicking start, while David Warner too managed a 36 off 34 but once the duo were back in the hut, the middle-order again failed to come to the fore.

Back at the top with his opening partner Warner, Bairstow amassed 18 runs from Trent Boult in the third over with the help of three fours and a six.

Adam Milne was then treated with equal disdain, sending him for two maximums and a four as he bled 19 runs.

Krunal Pandya was then handed the ball but the result was the same as he conceded 13 runs with Bairstow and Warner smashing a six and a four respectively as SRH amassed 55 in 5 overs.

Bumrah then bowled a tight over but Warner sent Milne for a six as SRH reached 57 for no loss in powerplay.

Lady luck smiled on MI finally when Bairstow hit wicket while looking for a slog sweep off Krunal.

Chahar then removed Manish Pandey (2), while Hardik’s direct throw found Warner short as SRH slumped to 91 for 3.

Chahar handed SRH a twin blow in his last over, dismissing Virat Singh (11) and Abhishek Sharma (2) — both playing their first games of the season.

Vijay (28 off 25) cracked two sixes off Krunal to keep SRH in the hunt but he kept losing his partners as Abdul Samad (7) was sent packing by Hardik with another direct throw and then Boult produced a perfect yorker to rid get of Rashid (0).

Vijay too perished in the next over as SRH fell short once again.

Earlier, Rohit Sharma (32 off 25) and Quinton de Kock (40 off 39) scored 53 in the powerplay after opting to bat but Vijay (2/19) and Afghanistan spin duo of Mujeeb (2/29) and Rashid Khan (0/22) brought the Sunrisers back in the game.

Rohit completed 4000 T20 runs as a skipper and also surpassed Mahendra Singh Dhoni’s record of hitting the most number of sixes by an Indian in the tournament.

The 33-year-old now has 217 sixes in IPL, one ahead of Dhoni.

He occupies the third place in the overall list after Punjab Kings’ Chris Gayle (351) and Royal Challengers Bangalore’s AB de Villiers (237).

With Rohit and de Kock looking in full flow, it seemed MI will put up a big score.

However, MI soon slipped to 71 for 2 with Vijay Shankar dismissing Rohit and Suryakumar Yadav (10) in his two overs.

While the MI skipper holed out to Virat Singh in the sixth over, Suryakumar was caught and bowled in the 9th over.

Rashid Khan and Mujeeb then tightened the screw on MI as the well-set de Kock next perished at deep mid-wicket.

With MI at 107 for 3 in 16 overs, Pollard clubbed one over mid-wicket but Mujeeb soon dismissed Ishan Kishan (12 off 21) with wicketkeeper Bairstow taking a fabulous catch.

New man Hardik Pandya and Pollard couldn’t produce their trademark hitting as the former holed out to Virat in the deep.

Pollard, who was dropped by Vijay in 19th over, ended things on a high, smashing the last two balls of Bhuvneshwar Kumar for two sixes.

  • Shankar, Mujeeb help Sunrisers Hyderabad restrict Mumbai Indians to 150/5

    By PTI
CHENNAI: Vijay Shankar and Mujeeb Ur Rahman shone with the ball as Sunrisers Hyderabad produced a disciplined bowling performance to restrict Mumbai Indians to 150 for 5 in their IPL match here on Saturday.

The opening duo of Rohit Sharma (32 off 25) and Quinton de Kock (40 off 39) scored 53 in the powerplay after opting to bat but Vijay (2/19) and Afghanistan spin duo of Mujeeb (2/29) and Rashid Khan (0/22) brought the Sunrisers back in the game.

Rashid Khan and Mujeeb then tightened the screw on MI as the well-set de Kock next perished at deep mid-wicket in his pursuit for a big shot.

Pollard then joined Ishan Kishan (12 off 21) in the middle but the scoring remained difficult.

With MI at 107 for 3 in 16 overs, Pollard clubbed one over mid-wicket to break the shackles but Mujeeb soon dismissed Ishan with wicketkeeper Jonny Bairstow taking a fabulous catch.

New man Hardik Pandya and Pollard couldn’t produce their trademark hitting as the former holed out to Virat in the deep.

Pollard, who was dropped by Vijay, managed to smash the last two balls of the innings for two sixes as MI reached 150 in the end.

  • IPL 2021: Sunrisers fret over right combination against formidable Mumbai

    By PTI
CHENNAI: Getting the combination right would be topmost on Sunrisers Hyderabad’s to-do list when they take on a qualitatively superior Mumbai Indians in an IPL encounter here on Saturday, trying to arrest an early slide after back-to-back defeats.

To make matters worse, the nature of the Chennai track is not great news for the David Warner-led ‘Orange Army’ that failed to chase down a total that was less than 150.

Chasing has been Sunrisers’ achilles’ heel during the first two matches, once again bringing under scanner, their lack of depth in the playing XI and below-par Indian bench strength.

In these circumstances, facing a formidable team like Mumbai Indians, fresh from their ‘Houdini Act’ against Kolkata Knight Riders, would be a difficult proposition.

For skipper Warner, there are some serious questions about the choice of the playing XI, which many believe hasn’t been well thought out and the results also back that assessment.

Using two wicketkeepers — Jonny Bairstow and Wriddhiman Saha — in the same XI hasn’t served any tangible purpose with the veteran Indian looking completely out of sorts as an opener.

Saha has been playing IPL from the first edition (2008) and a closer look at his record indicates that he has not been consistently successful in scoring runs.

With a seasoned man like Kedar Jadhav in the dug-out, along with two talented youngsters Priyam Garg and Abhishek Sharma, Saha is on borrowed time as far as his place in the side is concerned.

In case of Kedar and Abhishek, they also provide the option of slow bowling — off-breaks for the veteran and slow left-arm orthodox for the youngster.

With only Warner and Rashid Khan being certainties among the overseas players, a fit Kane Williamson is a must for SRH, factoring in his prowess against spin bowling.

The manner in which the likes of Manish Pandey and Abdul Samad played cross-batted shots against RCB left-arm spinner Shahbaz Ahmed left Warner far from amused.

And Krunal Pandya, who bowls a much flatter trajectory and also a few clicks quicker than Shahbaz, can make matters even worse for the Pandeys and Samads if they don’t come up with a better gameplan.

For Pandey, being dropped from India’s central contracts on Thursday, has been a blow but his inability to finish games regularly is one of the reasons that he might not wear the India blues anytime soon.

However, this tournament gives him a platform to do course correction.

He is one of the five with slowest strike-rates to reach 3000 IPL runs.

On a track like Chepauk, at times it becomes imperative to play as late as possible and use the depth of the crease well, which Williamson is adept at.

The other issue has been team’s bowling with T Natarajan not in the kind of form he was last season and Bhuvneshwar Kumar also on the expensive side.

Options like Sandeep Sharma and Siddarth Kaul don’t inspire too much confidence when one looks at Mumbai Indians top-order comprising Rohit Sharma, Quinton de Kock, Suryakumar Yadav and Ishan Kishan.

It is unlikely that MI will tinker with their playing XI and more so after winning a thriller against KKR.

However, they would like to put up a better account of their batting as theirs is a line-up that can just throw the pitch factor out of equation on a given day.

Teams (from): Mumbai Indians: Rohit Sharma (c), Suryakumar Yadav, Anmolpreet Singh, Chris Lynn, Saurabh Tiwary, Dhawal Kulkarni, Jasprit Bumrah, Rahul Chahar, Trent Boult, Mohsin Khan, Hardik Pandya, Jayant Yadav, Kieron Pollard, Krunal Pandya, Anukul Roy, Ishan Kishan, Quinton de Kock, Aditya Tare, Adam Milne, Nathan Coulter Nile, Piyush Chawla, James Neesham, Yudhvir Charak, Marco Jansen, Arjun Tendulkar.

SRH: David Warner (C), Kane Williamson, Virat Singh, Manish Pandey, Priyam Garg, Wriddhiman Saha, Jonny Bairstow, Jason Roy, Sreevats Goswami, Vijay Shankar, Mohammad Nabi, Kedar Jadhav, J Suchit, Jason Holder, Abhishek Sharma, Abdul Samad, Bhuvneshwar Kumar, Rashid Khan, T Natarajan, Sandeep Sharma, Khaleel Ahmed, Siddharth Kaul, Basil Thampi, Shahbaz Nadeem and Mujeeb ur Rahman.

  • We are going to learn from it: KKR all-rounder Andre Russell after defeat against Mumbai Indians

    By ANI
CHENNAI: After a disappointing 10-run defeat against Mumbai Indians at the MA Chidambaram Stadium on Tuesday, Kolkata Knight Riders all-rounder Andre Russell said that the side will learn from their mistakes and will do better in the coming games.

Mumbai Indians defeated KKR by 10 runs thanks to an all-rounder bowling performance from the Rohit Sharma-led side. Russell’s five-wicket haul had bundled Mumbai Indians out for 152 after batsman Suryakumar Yadav’s (56) quickfire knock. In response, KKR were restricted to 142/7.

KKR were right on the track for an easy win but Rahul Chahar spun a web and removed the top four batsmen before Jasprit Bumrah and Trent Boult’s fiery spell handed Mumbai Indians the match.

“Yeah, I support that (Shah Rukh Khan) tweet but at the end of the day the game of cricket… you are not sure until it’s over. I think we are still confident, we still played some good cricket and I am proud of the boys. You know, we are definitely disappointed but it’s not the end of the road, it’s only the second game and we are going to learn from it,” Russell said in the virtual post-match press conference.

“I just think it’s a game of cricket. I have played hundreds of T20 games and I have seen games where teams cruise in on the driver’s seat and then suddenly lose a few wickets, new batters come in and struggle to get away and that’s what happened tonight,” he said.

“So, we definitely have to learn from this as I have said before. We will look to make sure that who’s in, stays in and once we learn from all these mistakes that happened tonight we will definitely do better because we have a good team. I have trust and confidence in the boys,” the all-rounder added.

Rusell further said the wicket was not the easiest to bat on and for him also it was challenging.

“You have to try and stay as still as possible, be open-minded. It is a difficult wicket to bat on and it is not easy for a new batsman to come in and start the hitting from ball one. It is very challenging, even for me the ball was a bit up and down. It is not the easiest wicket to bat on, no matter how good you are you still need a couple of balls to actually get your eye in,” he said.

KKR will next play against Royal Challengers Bangalore here at the MA Chidambaram Stadium on April 18.

  • Confidence will go high after great team effort against KKR: Mumbai Indians skipper Rohit Sharma

    By ANI
NEW DELHI: After a win against Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) at the MA Chidambaram Stadium on Tuesday, Mumbai Indians skipper Rohit Sharma said that the team’s confidence will go high from here and termed the victory as a “great team effort”.

Mumbai Indians defeated KKR by 10 runs thanks to an all-round bowling performance from the Rohit Sharma-led side. Andre Russell’s five-wicket haul saw Mumbai Indians get bundled out for 152 after batsman Suryakumar Yadav’s (56) quickfire knock. In response, KKR was restricted to 142/7.

KKR was right on track for an easy win but Rahul Chahar spun a web and removed the top four batsmen before Jasprit Bumrah and Trent Boult’s fiery spell handed Mumbai Indians the match.

“It was a great team effort. Everyone chipped in with the performances which are always nice when you have team performances like that. The confidence can only go high from here. I’m very proud of the boys,” Rohit said in a video posted by MI’s official Twitter handle.

“When you win a game like, it is always nice and shows that the team has a lot of fight in it. A lot of credit has to go to our bowling coach,” he added.

Rohit also bowled one over in the match, however, he twisted his ankle on the way to delivering his first ball but it wasn’t that serious and he continued the over. He gave 14 runs off that over.

“I enjoyed my one over. It was after a long time but I thought I could just get in and bowl that over with two left-handers and the pitch not seeming easy for the batters. I thought it will a great idea and a lot of guys from the team backed me to bowl that over,” he said.

MI head coach Mahela Jayawardene lauded the bowling unit for their fightback in the game and added that they are adapting to the conditions.

“Credit to Rohit and the team, the way they handled the situation there in the middle. Definitely in the second half, we had to dig deep. The bowling unit kept us in the game and created few opportunities. At the end, we managed to cross over the line. We needed that win, just to get on the board. It is not the easiest conditions, so we need to be better adapting to these conditions. I think the bowling unit was fantastic,” he said.

“Even in the first game, they kept us in the game. Today was a great effort, especially Rahul to come back strongly picking up those wickets in the middle. Gave us that crucial breakthrough as well and then Bumrah, Krunal bowling at the back end and Boult coming in at the end just to finish things off,” Jayawardene added.

Mumbai Indians will next take on SunRisers Hyderabad here at the MA Chidambaram Stadium on Saturday.

  • Not many sides can defend 31 from 30 balls: Virender Sehwag hails Mumbai Indians’ effort against KKR

    By ANI
NEW DELHI: As Mumbai Indians achieved an improbable win against Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) in the Indian Premier League (IPL) on Tuesday, former India batsman Virender Sehwag lauded the effort of Rohit Sharma’s boys.

Mumbai Indians defeated KKR by 10 runs thanks to a spirited bowling performance from the Rohit Sharma-led side. Russell’s five-wicket haul saw Mumbai Indians bundled out for 152 after batsman Suryakumar Yadav’s (56) quickfire knock. In response, KKR was restricted to 142/7.

“MI to KKR- Dekha aapne laparwahi ka.natija. To defend 31 from 30 balls with 7 wickets of the opposition in hand is something which not many sides can defend. Brilliant bowling display from @mipaltan,” tweeted Sehwag.

KKR was right on the track for an easy win but Rahul Chahar spun a web and removed the top four batsmen before Jasprit Bumrah and Trent Boult’s fiery spell handed Mumbai Indians the match by 10 runs.

Krunal Pandya bowled economically and just gave 13 runs in his four overs and picked the wicket of Shakib Al Hasan. Rahul Chahar returned with the figures of 4-27 in his four overs and he was named the Player of the Match.

“We both bowled well. Krunal did not give many runs in his spell. In the last match it was not like this but this time there was help from the wicket for spinners. We will play the main role if we get these kinds of wickets,” said Chahar during the post-match press conference on Tuesday.

Mumbai Indians will next take on SunRisers Hyderabad here at the MA Chidambaram Stadium on Saturday.
