  • Day 1 of first Test will set the tone of what follows, says VVS Laxman

The countdown to the first ball of a much-awaited Test series is on. As the clock ticks towards Thursday for the start time of the Adelaide Test, there will be a few butterflies in the stomach; and according to former India batsman VVS Laxman, what the two teams do in those opening exchanges could decide how the four-Test Border-Gavaskar trophy pans out.

The white-ball exchange ended on an even note. Australia won the ODI series 2-1 and India replied by winning the T20I trophy with the same scoreline. But the switch to Test cricket is the biggest examination the players will sit for over the next month. And it starts with the most challenging question paper in the form of a day-night Test.

“India can derive confidence from their series win last time around and the brand of cricket they have showcased, but Adelaide offers a unique challenge in that it will be their first pink-ball Test overseas,” said Laxman in his column for The Times of India

  • Sony PlayStation 5 gaming console officially goes on sale today

Sony has today released its highly-anticipated gaming console — Sony PlayStation 5 (PS5). The device, successor of the seven-year-old PS4, is now available for purchase in major regions. The launch comes just a couple of days after Microsoft started selling its latest gaming console — Xbox Series X.

The Japanese company has released both the new devices — PlayStation 5 Standard Edition and PlayStation 5 Digital Edition. While the standard edition costs $499, the digital edition is a bit cheapest, costing $399.

Pre-orders for the Sony PS5 units started in September and were quickly sold out. The company has said that this latest-generation gaming console won’t be available in-store on the launch day and will be available through online sales only.

As for the availability in the United States, the listing of PS5 on Target says that it’s “only available with Drive Up or Order Pickup services.” On the other hand, Walmart has announced that consoles will be “online at 12PM, 3PM, 6PM, 9PM ET.” It will also be available for purchase through NewEgg, Amazon, and GameStop.

  • Voting begins, first ballots cast in New Hampshire

The much-awaited election day kicked off in the United States on Tuesday with the first ballots cast in Dixville Notch and Millsfield, towns in the northeastern state of New Hampshire.

The midnight vote began today with voters choosing their preferred candidates for US president and New Hampshire governor, as well as federal and state legislative seats, Xinhua reported.
In the makeshift “Ballot Room” at Dixville Notch’s Balsams Resort, Les Otten, one of the only five local registered voters, cast the first ballot.

The 2020 US elections, including presidential and congressional races, came amid a surging COVID-19 pandemic in the country. Americans will decide the fate of incumbent President Donald Trump and former Vice President Joe Biden through their votings.

To win the presidency, either Trump or Biden must acquire over 50 per cent of the electoral college vote, which is 538 in total. Therefore, each candidate must get a minimum of 270 electoral votes to clinch the presidency.

Joe Biden is currently leading Donald Trump in the national polls as the US approaches its 2020 presidential election. If elected, he would be the oldest president in US history at his inauguration, at age 78. Trump, who is currently 74, would also be the oldest president ever if he wins a second term.

But leading in polls does not guarantee victory. Hillary Clinton also had a clear lead over Trump in the polls for almost the entire 2016 campaign. She ended up losing in the electoral college.
