  • Tweet row: MP cops use force, foil Congress protest march to Kangana’s filming location

    Express News Service
BHOPAL: Demanding an apology from Kangana Ranaut over her “anti-farmer” tweet, Congress workers on Friday evening staged protests at Sarani town of MP where the actress is shooting for Bollywood flick ‘Dhaakad’.

Led by Betul legislator Nilay Daga and district Congress president Sunil Sharma, the party activists tried to march to the coal handling plant of the Satpura Thermal Power Station but were stopped by the police around 200 meters away.

Kangana has been shooting at the same coal handling plant premises for the last few days along with Arjun Rampal and others for ‘Dhaakad’, which is slated for October 2021 release.

With the Congress activists hell-bent on entering into the coal handling plant premises, the police first used water cannon to disperse the protestors. But when the activists started scuffling with the cops, they used force to push them back.

Later, Congress gave a 48-hour ultimatum to the actress to apologise within for her last week’s tweet failing which the protest would intensify. Last week, the actress had attacked the Barbadian pop singer Rihanna for extending support to the ongoing farmers’ agitation. While responding to Rihanna’s tweet, Kangana had tweeted dubbing the protesting farmers as “terrorists.”

However, Kangana was camping at a resort in Churna in the Satpura Tiger Reserve (around 25 km from Sarani town), while the protests were going on at Sarani.

Earlier on Thursday evening, the Betul District Congress president Sunil Sharma had announced to hold the protests in Sarani town, demanding an apology from Kangana for her controversial tweet. On the same day, the actress tweeted, “Mujhe netagiri mein koi interest nahin… magar lagta hai Congress mujhe neta banakar hi choragi (I don’t have any interest in politics, but it seems Congress is determined to make me a politician).”

The police security cover had been tightened around the Coal Handling Plant in Sarani in the wake of Congress’s threats to stall the shooting of the flick starring Kangana, who was granted Y-plus security cover by the central government in September 2020. The Centre’s move came after she claimed a threat to her life in the wake of her statements about the presence of an alleged drug nexus in Bollywood.

  • Munawar Faruqui arrested under pressure from BJP MLA’s son, claims comedian’s kin

    Express News Service
BHOPAL: Following grant of interim bail by the Supreme Court to jailed stand-up comedian Munawar Faruqui, his father-in-law Younis Khan alleged that the FIR against him was lodged by Indore Police under pressure from the son of a BJP MLA.

“We all are relieved that he (Faruqui) has not only been granted interim bail in the Indore case, but the arrest warrant issued in the old case of UP’s Prayagraj district also has been stayed by the top court,” Younis told The New Indian Express over the phone from Junagarh (Gujarat).

The Junagarh native man, whose daughter has been married to Faruqui since 2017, further alleged that his son-in-law was arrested and booked for the offence, despite having not committed any criminal act.

“Even the audience at the New Year Day comedy show in Indore had said that he (Faruqui) hadn’t even performed at the show, where he is alleged to have made the offensive remarks about Hindu deities. He was only present there,” alleged Younis.

“It was all done under pressure of the ruling BJP MLA’s son — right from my son-in-law’s detention to his naming in the FIR and subsequent arrest. The BJP MLA’s son got him (Faruqui) named in the case just on the basis of the 10-month-old case pending in UP. The police in Indore had no evidence against my son-in-law having made objectionable remarks against Hindu deities, but they acted under pressure of the MLA’s son,” he further alleged.

It was the right-wing Hindu outfit ‘Hind Raksha Sangathan’ leader Eklavya Singh Gaur (son of ex Indore mayor and present BJP MLA Malini Gaur) on whose complaint, six men, including Faruqui, two brothers Prakhar and Priyam Vyas, Edward Anthony, Nalin Yadav, and Sadakat Khan were arrested on January 2 by the Tukoganj police in Indore.

The six men were booked under IPC Sections 295-A (deliberate and malicious acts intended to outrage religious feelings), 298 (deliberate intent to wound the religious feelings), 269 (negligent act likely to spread disease), 188 (disobedience to order duly promulgated by public servant) and 34 (common intention).Gaur and aides had got the New Year Day show at a popular cafe in Indore Chhapan Dukan area stopped on January 1 evening, alleging that the Faruqui and others had hurt Hindu religious sentiments by making insulting remarks about Hindu deities at the show.

Subsequently, Faruqui and five others were arrested on January 2 after being booked in the case filed on Gaur’s complaint. Faruqui’s bail pleas were later rejected by the district and sessions court as well as the Indore Bench of MP High Court.

  • Three inter-state criminals held from Gwalior’s crowded locality after combined op by UP-MP cops

    By Express News Service
BHOPAL: Residents of crowded Dana Oli locality in Gwalior city of Madhya Pradesh woke up on Thursday to a real-life crime thriller, as three inter-state criminals were arrested after an hour and half joint operation of MP and UP police.

The three criminals, who were arrested with three single-shot country-made guns and 25 live cartridges, were holed up in a house in the lanes of Dana Oli area’s Jamunalal Market. The house owner’s son was lodged with one of the three criminals in the past at Dabra jail in Gwalior, owing to which they used the house as a safe hideout.

The trio was involved in a recent loot case in Shivpuri Bazar area of adjoining Jhansi district of UP. One of their aides had revealed to Jhansi district police about the hideout of the three criminals on the run.

“A team from our local police station went with the Jhansi police team to the spot in the crowded area at around 9.05 am. But all three criminals started brandishing their weapons and training the guns at the police. Soon, more police personnel and senior police officers were sent to the spot,” Gwalior district police superintendent Amit Sanghi told The New Indian Express.

Seeing the police numbers increase outside, the three gunmen shut themselves in the house and started training guns at the cops to get a safe passage out from the area. Coming to know about the situation, the SP-Gwalior Amit Sanghi himself reached the spot and asked the trio to surrender.

Seeing their hideout being surrounded by police and no safe passage to escape, the armed trio demanded that media personnel be brought to the place for their surrender. But even after the media teams reached the spot, the trio didn’t come out, after which the police fired tear gas shell into the house, which forced one of the criminals to come out and surrender before the police.

However, the remaining two were not ready to surrender even after an hour. The police shifted residents of adjoining houses to safer places and warned them of grenade attack if they attempt to resist arrest any further.

The warning worked for the police as it subsequently got the two out from the house.  The three arrested men have been identified as 30-year-old Laljit Yadav, a native of Azamgarh district of UP who carried Rs 25,000 reward, 26-year-old Saddam Khan who hailed from Datia district of MP and 20-year-old Pawan Parmar from Rajasthan’s Dholpur district.

“The entire operation continued for an hour and half, after which all the three armed men were arrested. Had these men not been traced and arrested, they could have committed some big crime in the crowded area, which also houses the jewellery market,” SP Gwalior Amit Sanghi said.
