Forget the 90s legend for a moment—meet the new Mohammad Azharuddin, a wicketkeeper-batsman who’s turned 31 without a single cap for India. Hailing from Kerala, his story is one of passion, persistence, and a name that carries the weight of cricket history.

The original Azharuddin’s era from 1989 to 1999 saw him captain India and mesmerize with his batting flair, inspiring a generation. Fans named kids after him, including this Azharuddin, born in 1994 in Kerala to admiring parents.

Taking his namesake’s legacy to heart, he entered professional cricket in 2015, debuting in first-class for Goa, List A soon after, and T20 in 2016. Since then, he’s anchored Kerala’s campaigns in all formats.

Dig into his record: 1,932 first-class runs from 43 matches, featuring two hundreds (best 177*) and 11 fifties. List A: 1,163 runs in 55 games with 1 century and 8 half-tons. In 51 T20s, 878 runs at 129.68 SR, including a 137* and another ton.

As a keeper, he’s no slouch—109 catches/16 stumpings (FC), 42/6 (List A), 29/1 (T20).

India’s wicketkeeping pool is overflowing with talents like Pant, Samson, Kishan, Rahul, Jitesh, and Jurel. To crash this party, Azharuddin must elevate his game in upcoming domestics.

His journey underscores the depth of Indian cricket talent. Will selectors finally notice? The wait continues, but his resolve remains unshaken.

At a vibrant iftar event hosted by the Telangana government at Hyderabad’s LB Stadium, Chief Minister Revanth Reddy on Sunday reaffirmed his commitment to prioritizing Muslim community upliftment. Speaking to an enthusiastic audience, he outlined bold steps to foster development and counter divisive politics.

The CM sharply criticized political outfits accused of engineering religious divisions to spark unrest. Amid the holy month of Ramzan, he celebrated the iftar arrangement as a gesture of solidarity with fasting brothers and sisters.

‘We must amplify brotherhood and embrace communal harmony for national progress,’ Revanth Reddy declared, warning against forces sowing discord among faiths.

Backing words with deeds, he detailed appointments: Mohammad Azharuddin in the cabinet, Mohammad Ali Shabbir as advisor, and eight minority figures in key corporation posts. Sporting achievements weren’t overlooked—Mohammad Siraj’s DSP posting and Nikhat Zareen’s Rs 2 crore honor underscore the recognition.

Reflecting on history, the CM harked back to the 4% minority reservation introduced by YS Rajasekhara Reddy in undivided Andhra, which boosted access to education and employment. ‘I’m your brother in this government that belongs to you,’ he assured, seeking collective support.

The gathering united Minority Minister Azharuddin, MP Asaduddin Owaisi, advisor Shabbir, Congress leaders, and prominent personalities, all pledging to elevate Telangana to the top spot among India’s youngest states through unity.

Mumbai’s prodigious talent factory produced Vinod Kambli, a left-handed wizard who shared school nets with Sachin Tendulkar. Born January 18, 1972, their juvenile exploits—record-shattering stands—foreshadowed stardom. Tendulkar debuted for India in 1989; Kambli waited, entering ODIs in 1991 before his Test initiation on January 29, 1993, versus England at Kolkata’s iconic Eden Gardens.

Azharuddin’s men opted to field after winning the toss. England crumbled to 163 all out. India’s riposte: 371, powered by the skipper’s 182. Kambli, arriving at No. 3, scratched around for 16 runs off 46 balls. England’s follow-on yielded 286, setting India 79 to win—knocked off for 82/2. Kambli finished not out on 18, but the debut offered no fireworks.

Brighter days ensued. Across 17 Tests, he plundered 1,084 runs at an elite 54.20 average—4 hundreds, 3 fifties, best of 227. Form deserted him swiftly; selectors axed him post-17 games. In ODIs, longevity prevailed: 104 caps, 2,477 runs (2×100, 14×50), bowing out in 2000.

Pundits once pegged Kambli’s technique above Tendulkar’s. Alas, wayward habits and faltering commitment derailed the dream. Lately, illness and money troubles dominate narratives. Yet, Kambli’s latest pledge—to train rigorously, reclaim fitness, and mentor his boy—hints at unfinished business as he battles back to health.

The ongoing debate surrounding India and Pakistan’s cricket matches has intensified, particularly concerning the recent ‘no-handshake’ incident. Following the Indian team’s refusal to shake hands with their Pakistani counterparts, the Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) lodged a complaint with the International Cricket Council (ICC), also involving match referee Andy Pycroft. Former Indian cricketer Mohammad Azharuddin shared his perspective on the controversy during NDTV’s special Asia Cup show. He expressed a contrasting viewpoint, stating there was nothing wrong with the customary handshake. Azharuddin emphasized that players should engage fully in the spirit of the game, including pre and post-match interactions. He found the situation perplexing and suggested that if teams were protesting, they should avoid participating altogether. India is scheduled to play Pakistan on Sunday, September 21, at the Dubai International Stadium as part of the Super Four stage of the Asia Cup 2025.

Former Indian captain Mohammad Azharuddin has voiced his opinion on India’s decision to compete against Pakistan in the upcoming Asia Cup 2025. The tournament, scheduled to be held in the UAE from September 9 to 28, will see the highly anticipated match on September 14. Azharuddin questioned India’s approach, criticizing the team’s willingness to play Pakistan in a multilateral tournament while avoiding bilateral series. He expressed his belief that if bilateral matches are not happening, then participation in international events should also be reconsidered. However, he acknowledged that the final decision rests with the government and the board. His comments followed the India Champions’ refusal to play against Pakistan Champions in the World Championship of Legends (WCL), which was subsequently canceled due to political tensions. Azharuddin clarified that the WCL is not an official tournament, unlike the Asia Cup, which is governed by the Asian Cricket Council (ACC).
