The prime minister was addressing a workshop, initiated by India, on Covid management. “Over the past year, our health cooperation has already achieved so much. The workshop assumed significance as for the first time in years, Pakistan attended an event initiated by India. Representatives of Afghanistan, Bangladesh, Bhutan, Maldives, Mauritius, Nepal, Seychelles and Sri Lanka participated.

Modi made a slew of other suggestions, including the creation of an air ambulance agreement and a platform for collating, compiling and studying data about the effectiveness of Covid vaccines among the population. Recalling how a Covid-19 Emergency Fund was created last year by the SAARC member states, he sought cooperation  for rapid deployment of vaccines.

All countries, including Pakistan, supported Modi’s proposals, said sources. They suggested a structured discussion for regional cooperation on these proposals to take them forward. • Modi to target Mamata over Bengal’s poor investment

    By Express News Service
KOLKATA:  Prime Minister Narendra Modi is likely to visit West Bengal on February 22 and address a rally in Chinsurah, the industrial zone of Hooghly district.  Chinsurah was selected strategically as his previous rally was in East Midnapore district which is known as Bengal’s agricultural region, sources in the BJP said.

As Modi had addressed farmers on February 7, the sources said, he will deliver a message on investment from a place from where Tata Motors were “driven out” by the ruling Trinamool Congress. “It was Mamata Banerjee who had spearheaded a movement against the forcible land acquisition in Singur, Hooghly, and driven out Tata Motors. Since then, Bengal has not any seen any investment. Our party functionaries both national and state are promising investment.

The Hooghly visit will send a message that the BJP is equally focused on farmers and investment,’’ said a senior BJP leader. The BJP’s state functionaries have decided to finding out a venue on the bank of the Hooghly, as factories are located along the riverside and most of them are closed.  “We have identified two places. One is adjoining to Chinsurah court and the other is near the closed Dunlop factory on the outskirts of the district headquarters. Both the venues are on the bank of the Hooghly.

We want the PM to address the rally from the venue near Dunlop factory. It will send a message highlighting the sorry state of investment in Bengal,’’ said another BJP leader. Chinsurah is under Hooghly Lok Sabha constituency which the BJP had bagged in 2019 Lok Sabha elections.  The BJP leader said the Bengal state functionaries has requested the party’s high command for bringing Amit Shah in Singur but it is yet to get a nod from Delhi.

LUCKNOW: In a high voltage drama, Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s younger brother Prahlad Modi sat on a dharna at Chaudhury Charan Singh airport in Lucknow demanding the release of his supporters who were detained by the Sultanpur police on Wednesday.

Sitting at the airport, Prahlad Modi, vice-president of All India Fair Price Shop Dealers’ Federation (AIFPSDF), questioned the functioning of the Lucknow police and even threatened to go on an indefinite hunger strike if his supporters were not released with immediate effect.

However, later in the evening, Modi ended his sit-in after the release of his supporters in Sultanpur.

Earlier, the Sultanpur police, on Wednesday morning, had arrested Jitendra Tiwari, an aide of Prahalad Modi for putting up posters of Prime Minister Narendra Modi along with UP CM Yogi Adityanath without seeking any permission for using their pictures. The posters also had photos of Home Minister Amit Shah and Dy CMs of the state.

The posters, over an event which had to be hosted by Prahalad Modi on Thursday, were put up at several places across Sultanpur.

According to Sultanpur SP Arvind Chaturvedi, after spotting two posters in the district which read ‘Pradhanmanti Jan Kalyankari Yojna Prachar Prasar Abhiyaan’ and also carried photos of PM, UP CM Yogi Adityanath, and others. A probe was conducted.

Based on the information, first, all the posters were removed from the city followed by the detention of  Jitendra Tiwari, the organiser of the event slated for February 4.

In the wake of the sit-in by Modi, police officials in the state capital denied having detained or arrested any of his associates in Lucknow.

Further, Deputy Commissioner of Police, Central Zone, Somen Barma, said that Prahlad Modi had not taken permission for hosting an event in the city hence, he was not allowed as per laws. “None of his workers/members/were detained or arrested,” Barma clarified.

  • Amid Covaxin controversy, PM Modi urges people to have faith in Indian vaccine

    By Express News Service
NEW DELHI: Amid controversy over Bharat Biotech’s Covaxin, Prime Minister Narendra Modi emphasised that people should not fall for propaganda as he launched the vaccination drive to safeguard India’s population from Covid-19. Addressing the nation before the launch at 10.30 am, the PM urged citizens to stay vigilant and maintain all precautions against SARS CoV-2, including masks and distancing, even after getting the shots. Addressing concerns over Covaxin, he said, “The DGCI gave approval after they were satisfied with the data of the two vaccines. So, stay away from rumours.”

He added that Indian vaccine developers had global credibility and pointed out that life-saving vaccines given to 60% children globally are made in India. He also underlined that Indian vaccines were cheaper compared to the other global vaccines which required stringent conditions for storage. “India’s vaccines are developed in a way keeping in mind the conditions of the country.

They will give a decisive victory to our country,” Modi added. Mentioning the difficult times during the peak of the Covid-19 pandemic, Modi at one point choked up as he spoke about people who could not perform the last rites of their loved ones, those who were separated from their families and the elderly who died in isolation. “Today when we take a look at the last year, we realise that we have learnt a lot as individuals, family and nation. I want to remember those days when the disease kept people away from their families. Mothers wept for their children but couldn’t hold them.

Old fathers fought the disease alone in hospitals; their children could not help them. We could perform rituals for those who died due to corona,” said the PM. Striking an emotional chord, he referred to the sacrifices made by healthcare and frontline workers, hundreds of whom have lost their lives over the last several months “In times of that crisis and atmosphere of despair, some were giving us hope.

They were putting themselves at risk to save us — doctors, nurses, paramedics, ambulance drivers, sanitation workers, police and other frontline workers — they prioritised their duty to humanity,” he said. “They stayed away from their families and children; they stayed away from home for days… Hundreds never returned home. They sacrificed their lives to save lives. So today, by vaccinating healthcare workers first, society is paying their debt,” said the PM.

The Prime Minister, introduced by India’s U.N Ambassador T.S. Tirumurti, delivered his address on Monday via a recorded video — a format the UN has adopted, due to the pandemic, so it can avoid the customary gathering of world leaders in New York for its annual General Assembly debate. Mr Modi said the commemorative declaration acknowledged that work needed to be done in conflict prevention, climate change, development and leveraging digital technology.

For today’s interconnected world, we need a reformed multilateralism that reflects today’s realities, gives voice to all stake holders, addresses contemporary challenges and focuses on human welfare.”

    Self-reliant India

Talking about the pre and post COVID worlds, Prime Minister observed that in order to fulfill the dream of making the 21st century India’s, the way forward is through ensuring that the country becomes self-reliant. Talking about turning a crisis into an opportunity, he gave the example of PPE kits N-95 masks, whose production in India has gone up from almost being negligible to 2 lakh each, on a daily basis.

Prime Minister remarked that the definition of self-reliance has undergone a change in the globalized world and clarified that when the country talks about self-reliance, it is different from being self-centered. He said that India’s culture considers the world as one family, and progress in India is part of, and also contributes to, progress in the whole world.  He noted that the world trusts that India has a lot to contribute towards the development of the entire humanity.

Five pillars of a self-reliant India

Recalling the devastation in Kutch after the earthquake, Prime Minister said that through determination and resolve, the area was back on its feet. A similar determination is needed to make the country self-reliant.

He said that a self-reliant India will stand on five pillars viz. Economy, which brings in quantum jump and not incremental change; Infrastructure, which should become the identity of India; System, based on 21st century technology driven arrangements; Vibrant Demography, which is our source of energy for a self-reliant India; and Demand, whereby the strength of our demand and supply chain should be utilized to full capacity. He underlined the importance of strengthening all stakeholders in the supply chain to increase, as well as fulfill, the demand.

    Atmanirbhar Bharat Abhiyaan

Prime Minister announced a special economic package and gave a clarion call for Atmanirbhar Bharat. He noted that this package, taken together with earlier announcements by the government during COVID crisis and decisions taken by RBI, is to the tune of Rs 20 lakh crore, which is equivalent to almost 10% of India’s GDP. He said that the package will provide a much needed boost towards achieving ‘Atmanirbhar Bharat’.

Talking about the positive impact of reforms like JAM trinity and others, brought about in the last six years, Prime Minister said that several bold reforms are needed to make the country self-reliant, so that the impact of crisis such as COVID, can be negated in future. These reforms include supply chain reforms for agriculture, rational tax system, simple and clear laws, capable human resource and a strong financial system. These reforms will promote business, attract investment, and further strengthen Make in India.

Prime Minister remarked that self-reliance will prepare the country for tough competition in the global supply chain, and it is important that the country wins this competition. The same has been kept in mind while preparing the package. It will not only increase efficiency in various sectors but also ensure quality.

Highlighting their contribution to the country, Prime Minister said that the package will also focus on empowering the poor, labourers, migrants, etc., both from organized and unorganized sectors.

He observed that the crisis has taught us the importance of local manufacturing, local market and local supply chains. All our demands during the crisis were met ‘locally’. Now, its time to be vocal about the local products and help these local products become global, he said.

    Living with COVID

Prime Minister noted that several experts and scientists have said that the virus is going to be part of our lives for a long time. But, it is also important to ensure that our life does-not revolve only around it. He exhorted people to work towards their targets while taking precautions like wearing masks and maintaining ‘do gaz doori’.

On the fourth stage of Lockdown, he said that its contours will be completely different from those seen yet. On the basis of recommendations received from states, new rules will be framed, and information about the same will be conveyed before 18th May.
