  • Modi cabinet: K Ram Mohan Naidu youngest, Jitan Ram Manjhi oldest in PM Modi’s Council of Ministers

New Delhi, At 36, Kinjarapu Ram Mohan Naidu is the youngest minister while 79-year-old Jitan Ram Manjhi is the oldest minister to be inducted in the 18th Lok Sabha. Naidu, Srikakulam MP from Telugu Desam Party (TDP), was sworn in as a minister of state (MoS) in Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s new Council of Ministers. Another young minister is Raksha Khadse (37), an MP from Maharashtra. She won the Raver Lok Sabha seat in Maharashtra. Manjhi was sworn in as a Union Cabinet Minister in Modi 3.0 government. He has served as the 23rd chief minister of Bihar, and is the founding president of Hindustani Awam Morcha (HAM).

Previously, Manjhi had served as the minister for scheduled castes and scheduled tribes welfare in Nitish Kumar’s Cabinet. He won the Gaya seat in 2024 general elections.

Some of the other young ministers include Chirag Paswan and Jayant Choudhary. PM Modi, along with his 71 ministers, took oath on Sunday as the new coalition government was formed after two full tenures in which the BJP enjoyed a majority on its own.

  • Modi 3.0 Cabinet Portfolio Allocation Full List: From Finance To Home, Check Who Got What |

A day after the swearing-in ceremony of the National Democratic Alliance cabinet including Prime Minister Narendra Modi, the central government will today allocate portfolios to its ministers. The BJP is likely to retain key ministries like Home Ministry, Finance, External Affairs and Defence. The NDA allies like the JDS, JDU, LJP-RV and Shiv Sena have also likely to get their fare share of the ministries as per the alliance deal.

President of India Droupadi Murmu administered oath of office to Prime Minister Narendra Modi and 71 Ministers at Rashtrapati Bhawan yesterday in presence of some global leaders and people from all walks of life who were invited to the grand ceremony.

The new Modi 3.0 Cabinet includes 30 Cabinet Ministers, five Ministers of State with Independent Charge, and 36 Ministers of State. PM Modi is the second Prime Minister after Jawaharlal Nehru to serve three consecutive terms. The key faces in the Modi cabinet include Rajnath Singh, Amit Shah, Piyush Goyal, Nirmala Sitharaman, Nitin Gadkari, S Jaishankar while allies who got Cabinet Minister berths include H. D. Kumaraswamy (JDS), Kinjarapu Rammohan Naidu (TDP), Chirag Paswan (LJP-RV) and Jitan Ram Manjhi (HAM) and Lalan Singh (JDU).

Of all the allies of the NDA, only NCP-Ajit Pawar was left out of the cabinet as the party rejected the offer of Minister of State with Independent Charge saying it would be a demotion for its candidate Praful Patel. Patel had earlier served as cabinet minister in the UPA government. The BJP has assured the NCP of resolving the issue in the coming days.

Since the first meeting of the Union Cabinet is likeky to be held this evening, it’s being speculated that the cabinet portfolio allocation will be cleared before the meeting. Induction of Rajya Sabha MPs like JP Nadda, Nirmala Sitharaman and S Jaishankar show that these leaders are likely to get big responsibilities.

  • ‘Upset’ Pankaja Munde meets PM Modi, JP Nadda in Delhi

    Express News Service
MUMBAI:  BJP leader Pankaja Munde met PM Narendra Modi and party chief JP Nadda on Sunday in Delhi amid reports that she was hurt by the non-inclusion of her sister in the NDA’s expanded Union Cabinet.

Pankaja, the daughter of late BJP leader and OBC stalwart Gopinath Munde, was expecting a Cabinet berth for Pritam who is a MP from Beed district. This development comes at a time when the BJP is looking to make inroads into the OBC voters. “BJP does not want to give anything to the Munde family but don’t want her to leave too. After the report of dissatisfaction against the BJP leadership, this must be an attempt by Nadda and Modi to pacify her ahead of the local elections,” said a party insider.

Though Pankaja has claimed she would abide by the party’s decision, several BJP leaders owing allegiance to her have resigned and others threatened mass resignations. According to her associate, there is a plan to curtail the importance of the two sisters in party.

“Pankaja lost the state polls to her nephew because BJP leaders helped him. They do not want any major competitor against Devendra Fadnavis. She should have been rehabilitated by giving an MLC post. But it was ignored.”  The recent Cabinet expansion in which Pritam Munde was ignored shows that BJP no more wants the two sisters, the associate asserted.

  • New Modi Cabinet in reality representation of entire India, says UP CM Yogi Adityanath

    By PTI
LUCKNOW:  Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath on Saturday said the Cabinet reshuffle initiated by Prime Minister Narendra Modi and induction of new ministers in his team is in reality the representation of entire India.

In a series of tweets in Hindi, Adityanath said.

“The kind of public representation and public partnership envisaged by our eminent personalities, especially thinkers like Babasaheb (B R Ambedkar) and (Ram Manohar) Lohia ji, is being fulfilled under the leadership of Modi ji.”

“Lohia ji was of the view that a mature democracy is possible only by giving power to the backward class. The prime minister has given constitutional status to the OBC Commission, and has also given representation to the OBC leadership in the Council of Ministers. Had Lohia ji been alive, he would have felt happy by seeing the seeds of his thoughts bearing fruit,” he said.

Hitting out at the opponents, Adityanath said some people were opposing the “positive change” that the country is witnessing.

“For these people, Lohia ji had said that when the big work of social transformation begins, some people oppose it due to anger (‘aavesh’). These are the same set of people who had opposed the constitution of the OBC Commission, and had also insulted Babasaheb. These people had never followed even a single principle of Lohia ji in their behavior,” he said.

In another tweet, Adityanath said, “Today, the believers of Babasaheb and Lohia ji will accept that Modi ji’s mantra of ‘Sabkaa Saath, Sabkaa Vikaas, Sabkaa Vishvaas’ has validated the soul of the Constitution in real sense. For this, we are grateful to the prime minister.”

  • PM Modi to chair Council of Ministers meeting on July 14

    By ANI
NEW DELHI: Prime Minister Narendra Modi is scheduled to chair a meeting with the Council of Ministers on Wednesday (July 14), said sources.

This will be PM Modi’s second meeting with the Council of Ministers after the Union Cabinet reshuffle on July 7.

A day after the expansion of the Union Cabinet, the Prime Minister had back-to-back meetings with the union cabinet and council of ministers on Thursday.

In the meeting on Thursday, sources said that Prime Minister had cautioned Ministers against any complacency in the fight against COVID-19, saying that over the past few days there have been pictures and videos of crowded places and people roaming about without masks or social distancing and “it should instil a sense of fear in us”.

The sources said the Prime Minister noted that people not following COVID-19 protocols was not a “pleasant sight”.

  • Jyotiraditya Scindia takes charge as Civil Aviation Minister

    By PTI
NEW DELHI: Jyotiraditya Scindia on Friday took charge of the Civil Aviation Ministry.

Scindia, a prominent leader from Madhya Pradesh, was sworn in as a cabinet minister on Wednesday.

He joined BJP in March 2020 and is a Rajya Sabha member.

General V K Singh also took charge as the Minister of State for Civil Aviation.

Scindia has taken over the charge of the ministry at a time when the civil aviation sector is facing strong headwinds due to the coronavirus pandemic which has impacted overall demand and has also resulted in financial woes for the industry players.

The government is also moving ahead with the disinvestment process for the national carrier Air India.

Scindia has served as a Minister of State for Communications, Commerce and Industry and power during the Congress-led UPA government.

The scion of the former royal family of Gwalior was inducted into the UPA government in 2007 and remained a part of the Union Cabinet till 2014.

He resigned from Congress and joined BJP in March 2020.

His move triggered a chain of events that finally culminated in the collapse of the Kamal Nath government in Madhya Pradesh and paved the way for the saffron party to assume power which it lost towards the end of 2018.

Born on January 1, 1971, and educated in Harvard and Stanford institutions, Scindia has traversed a long way after contesting his maiden election as a Congress candidate in 2002, a bypoll in the Guna Lok Sabha constituency, which was held because of the sudden death of his father, Madhavrao Scindia, in a plane crash.

  • Cabinet reshuffle: Increase visibility, BJP high command instructs new ministers

    By Express News Service
NEW DELHI:  In line with the reset mantra of the Prime Minister Narendra Modi-led NDA government at the Centre to work closely with the organisation, newly sworn-in ministers headed for a meeting with BJP chief JP Nadda, besides heading to the party’s headquarters, on Thursday.

Later in the evening the Prime Minister presided over a meeting of the Council of Ministers, where the task was clearly spelt out that the ministers should quickly settle in their jobs and stay visible in front of the public in general.

The likes of Jyotiraditya Scindia, Sarbanada Sonowal, Bhupender Yadav, Annapurna Devi visited the BJP headquarters. The newly sworn-in ministers called on Nadda at his residence, where the national joint general secretary of BJP, V Satish was also present along with other senior party functionaries.

The message to the new ministers has been clear. They have to closely work with the organisation and act on the feedback provided by the party leaders, sources said, adding that it has also been conveyed to them that they need to be visible.

The major recast of the Council of Ministers was preceded by hectic parleys by Nadda and senior ministers with the Prime Minister during which the party’s organisational secretary BL Santhosh had also been present. The BJP leadership had grimly noted that disconnect of some of the ministers in the government with the people and the party had been contributing to the formation of a negative image of the Central government, sources said.

The meeting of the Council of Ministers held in the evening was more of an orientation for the newly inducted members in the government, where the Prime Minister is learnt to have asked them to work on execution of agenda listed out for their respective ministries.

  • With Narayan Rane inducted in Modi’s cabinet, BJP eyes Maratha vote bank

    Express News Service
MUMBAI: Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s decision of inducting former chief minister Narayan Rane in his cabinet is a strong message that the BJP wants to shed its traditional Brahmin-Baniya party image in Maharashtra and plans to foster a strong Maratha leadership.

The BJP’s chief ministerial pick in the last assembly and current leader in the House, Devendra Fadnavis, is a Brahmin. But after the party lost power, many OBC and other communities started drifting away from it. The negativity against the party has been rising under Fadnavis. Hence, the BJP decided to do expand its vote base beyond Brahmin and Baniya voters.

During the time of Gopinath Munde, the BJP’s leadership was in the hands of OBC. After the rise of Fadnavis, it has been unable to test any major success despite using all resources. That’s another reason why the party has now decided to strengthen the hands of Rane, a Maratha. BJP sources said from now on, along with Fadnavis he will have a major say in party affairs.

Maharashtra has more than 30% Maratha population. The state’s politics has been always dominated by Maratha leaders such as Yashwantrao Chavan and Sharad Pawar. “The BJP also has Maratha leaders like Ashish Shelar and Chandrakant Patil, but they have their limitations. By inducting Rane, the party aims to wean away Maratha votes in upcoming polls,” said a senior leader.

Apart from Rane, the PM has inducted three new faces from the state: Kapil Patil, Bhagwat Karad and Bharati Pawar. Except for Karad, all three have switched to the BJP from other parties. Patil and Pawar were with the NCP earlier.

“This is a positive message for outsiders who are in the BJP: that positions are not only given to old and loyal members but also to new entrants provided they are hardworking, aggressively take on the opposition and expand the party base,” said a political observer. “During the last assembly polls, many Congress and NCP leaders joined BJP and got elected. But BJP could not form a government. These  MLAs are unhappy and may consider leaving the party. BJP hopes the message that those who bring benefits to the outfit will be appropriately rewarded will not be lost on such leaders.”

  • Modi Cabinet rejig: Induction of 4 Bengal ministers aims to balance state’s caste, regional equation

    Express News Service
KOLKATA: The Centre’s decision to axe two Bengal ministers and induction of four fresh faces from the state appears to be a well-designed move eyeing the saffron camp’s political dividend balancing castes and regions.

Since the victory in the party’s half of the seats in the recent Assembly elections came from north Bengal and Dalit-dominated regions, the four ministers will represent various communities and ethnic groups. As the BJP bagged 30 out of its 77 seats from North Bengal keeping its fortress untouched, two MPs from the region were given berths in the ministry.

Cooch Behar MP Nisith Pramanik, who represents Rajbongshis, the largest faction of the state’s Dalit community, took oath as minister for state (Home Affairs and Sports) and Alipurduar MP John Barla, the tribal face of the tea garden region, was sworn in as the minister for the state (Minority Affairs).

Two others — Bongaon MP Shantanu Thakur, who belongs to the Matua community, and Bankura MP Subhas Sarkar — were inducted as the minister for the state (Port, Shipping, Waterways) and minister for the state (Education) respectively.

“Rajbongshis form around 40% of the total electorates in north Bengal and the Dalit community has a stake of nearly 20% in the Jalpaiguri and Alipurduar regions. The selection of two MPs from the region clearly indicates the party doesn’t want to lose its Rajbongshi and tribal vote share that it had achieved in the Assembly elections,” said a BJP leader in Kolkata.

North Bengal proved to be the saffron camp’s stronghold in the two previous elections. Thirty seats in the region, which has 54 constituencies, went to BJP. In the rest of 240 seats, BJP managed to secure victory only in 37.

Recently, Barla raised demand in favour of north Bengal’s separation repeatedly and its inclusion in the list of Union Territories. “Separate statehood has been a long-standing demand of Gorkhas in the Hills and Rajbongshis in the foothills. The inclusion of Barla in the Union cabinet sends a message that the Centre is not ignoring the sentiment of the locals,” said the leader.

Matuas’ representative MP Shantanu Thakur had expressed his discontent on several occasions over the issue of the non-implementation of the Citizenship (Amendment) Act, a promise that the BJP had made ahead of the 2019 general elections to give Hindu refugees from Bangladesh citizenship. “Though the Act is yet to be implemented, BJP performed well in Matuas’s strongholds. Since the implementation of the Act is not happening anytime now, Thakur was drafted in the Union ministry to ease out Matuas’ further discontent which might cause a jolt to the party in the 2024 Lok Sabha polls,” said another BJP leader.

Taking Bankura MP Sarkar in the Union Cabinet was another move to retain BJP’s existing support base in the Jungle Mahal. “Compared to the 2019 Lok Sabha poll results, our party’s performance was not impressive in the region’s tribal areas. His inclusion was not only aimed to retain the existing vote bank but also regain the vote share lost to the ruling TMC,” said the leader.

  • Major clean up in mega shake-up of Modi’s Cabinet

    Express News Service
NEW DELHI:  Aiming to do an image makeover and making the party poll ready with ample representation from the weaker sections of the society, Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Wednesday carried out a major shake-up of his council of ministers. The adverse impact of Covid-19 apparently led to the culling of 12 ministers, including biggles like Dr Harsh Vardhan, Ravi Shankar Prasad and Prakash Javadekar.

With the government being hauled over the coals by an aggressive higher judiciary during the Covid second wave, Prasad lost his place in the new Cabinet. The new law minister is Kiren Rijiju, who has been elevated to Cabinet rank.

Javadekar was seen as not having delivered as the first spokesperson of the Centre in his role as minister for information and broadcasting. The new I&B minister is Anurag Thakur, who has also been given Cabinet rank. Vardhan, in the firing line for not anticipating the Covid second wave, lost his health portfolio to Mansukh Mandaviya, who who had been actively arranging medicines for Covid patients.

The axe also fell on Ramesh Pokhriyal ‘Nishank’ (education goes to Dharmendra Pradhan), Sadananda Gowda (chemicals and fertilizers with Mandaviya as added responsibility) and six ministers of states, which included Santosh Kumar Gangwar and Babul Supriyo.

Others who were elevated to Cabinet rank were Hardeep Puri, G Kishan Reddy, R K Singh and Puroshottam Rupala. In all, 43 ministers took oath of office. The first was Narayan Rane as Cabinet minister, which indicated the party is not looking to win back the Shiv Sena in Maharashtra, and will go it alone in the next Assembly polls while expanding its support base in the Konkan region. He will hold the MSME portfolio.

As expected, former CM of Assam Sarbananda Sonowal and the architect of the BJP government in Madhya Pradesh, Jyotiraditya Scindia got Cabinet rank. Scindia is the new minister for civil aviation. Interestingly, his father Madhavrao Scindia had quit as civil aviation minister in 1992 after an aircraft crash.

BJP’s national general secretary Bhupender Yadav, a key aide of Union home minister Amit Shah, and a protégé of late minister Arun Jaitley, joined the Cabinet. He will hold the environment and labour portfolios. Shah has been given the additional role of running the new ministry of cooperation.

Bureaucrat-turned-politician Ashwini Vaishnaw from Odisha also entered the Cabinet. He had earned his spurs in Vajpayee’s PMO. He is the new minister for information technology and railways. A dozen ministers from the Scheduled Castes were also drafted in, including A Narayanswamy (Karnataka), Kaushal Kishore (UP) and L Murugan (Tamil Nadu). With eight ministers hailing from the tribal community, the BJP clearly sought to work out its social engineering with the SCs, STs and Other Backward Castes (OBCs).

NDA allies who took their oath included R C P Singh (JD-U) and Pashupati Paras (LJP), both Cabinet rank, and Anupriya Patel of Apna Dal as minister of state. With Gujarat polls due next year, Mandaviya and Puroshottam Rupala, both belonging to the Patidar community, were promoted. Reddy’s elevation was in line with the BJP’s aspirations in Telangana. Adding combative leaders, the PM drafted in Shobha Karandlaje (Karnataka) and Meenakshi Lekhi (Delhi), while Bengal was represented by four new faces.

Youngest ever team picked so farWith an average age of 56, the new team is the youngest ever Modi has led so far. The youngest is first time Lok Sabha member from Cooch Behar Nisith Pramanik (35) while the eldest is 69. The other young ministers are Shantanu Thakur (38), Anupriya Patel (40), Bharati Pawar (42) and John Barla (45)

Seven former babus in Modi’s new teamThe new team has 27 members representing the Other Backward Classes, 12 Scheduled Caste and eight Scheduled Tribe ministers. It also has a Muslim, Christian and Sikh each and two Buddhists. As for professionals, it has three lawyers, six doctors, five engineers and seven former civil servants
