Tesla has introduced more affordable versions of its popular Model Y and Model 3 electric vehicles, aiming to reignite slowing sales figures. The new “Standard” trims offer a starting range of approximately 517 kilometers (321 miles) on a single charge. This strategic move comes at a critical time for the company, as it navigates an increasingly competitive electric vehicle landscape and faces challenges such as an aging product lineup and consumer boycotts. The updated models, priced under $40,000 for the Model Y and under $37,000 for the Model 3, feature a more minimalist interior, reduced audio systems, and less premium materials compared to their higher-end counterparts. Despite the price adjustments, the vehicles are still significantly above Tesla’s long-held promise of a $25,000 electric car. Investors showed a tepid reaction, with Tesla’s stock experiencing a notable decline following the announcement, indicating expectations that these new iterations may not significantly alter the company’s market trajectory.

Tesla has introduced more affordable versions of its popular Model Y and Model 3 electric vehicles, aiming to invigorate declining sales figures. The new Model Y Standard and Model 3 Standard boast an estimated driving range of 517 kilometers (321 miles). The Model Y Standard is priced just below $40,000, featuring a simplified interior to achieve its lower cost. This strategic move comes at a challenging time for Tesla, as it grapples with an aging product lineup, intensified competition from global electric vehicle manufacturers, and consumer boycotts linked to its CEO. The market’s lukewarm reception suggests these new models may not deliver the significant sales rebound investors are seeking. The company also unveiled a cheaper Model 3 variant, available for under $37,000, with potential to drop below $35,000 for New York residents utilizing state rebates. While Tesla has long spoken of a sub-$25,000 vehicle, these ‘standard’ models are priced considerably higher. Their launch also coincides with consumer hesitations due to the recent expiration of the $7,500 federal EV tax credit. Tesla’s stock experienced a notable decline following the announcement. The updated Model Y offers a reduced range of 321 miles, fewer audio components, and a fabric interior instead of microsuede. It also omits the panoramic glass roof and a rear-seat touchscreen. In the competitive $40,000 EV segment, it faces rivals like the Ford Mustang Mach-E, Chevrolet Equinox EV, and Hyundai Ioniq 5. Similarly, the new Model 3 includes fewer features, such as reduced driving range and ambient lighting.

Elon Musk’s electric car company, Tesla, launched the Model Y in India on July 15, 2025. The company commenced deliveries towards the end of September, approximately two months after the launch. By the end of September, Tesla had delivered a total of 60 Model Y units to Indian customers. Although this number may seem small, it represents a promising start for Tesla in India, given that it’s their first car in the country.

According to vehicle portal data, BMW sold 307 electric vehicles during the same period, while Mercedes-Benz sold 95, and Volvo sold 22. The delivery of Tesla’s 60 units, priced around ₹60 lakh (ex-showroom), positions it in the luxury EV market, competing with European brands.

The Model Y is available in two variants:

* Rear-Wheel Drive (RWD) with a range of 500 km (according to WLTP)
* Long Range RWD with a range of 622 km

Currently, the company has only started delivering the RWD variant, while deliveries of the Long Range model are expected in the coming months. The Model Y’s starting price is ₹59.89 lakh (ex-showroom). Tesla initiated bookings for the Model Y in July and has received over 600 orders. However, this is slightly less than the company’s initial expectations. Tesla initially aimed to import 2,500 units annually but, considering the slower demand, has revised its plan to limit it to 350 to 500 units per year. The company is likely to accelerate the delivery of the Tesla Model Y around Diwali.

The car also includes an autonomous driving feature, but customers will have to pay an additional ₹6 lakh. The Tesla Model Y offers a fantastic combination of premium features, safety technology, and all-electric performance.

Tesla is bolstering its presence in the Indian electric vehicle market with the upcoming launch of its second retail center in the country. This new Tesla Experience Centre is scheduled to open on August 11th at the WorldMark 3 campus in Aerocity, Delhi. This location will serve customers in the National Capital Region, an area crucial for India’s EV initiatives. The opening follows the recent inauguration of its first showroom in Mumbai’s Maker Maxity Mall on July 15th. The Mumbai launch event included Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis, who welcomed Tesla to the state and invited the company to establish research and development and manufacturing facilities. The Aerocity center is nearing completion, with estimated monthly rent around Rs 25 lakh. Images of the outlet have already surfaced, reflecting the brand’s premium image. Currently, Tesla offers only the Model Y in India, with prices starting at Rs 59.89 lakh (ex-showroom). The Model Y is available in two variants: Standard rear-wheel drive with a 60 kWh battery, offering a 500 km WLTP-certified range, and Long-range rear-wheel drive with a 75 kWh battery, providing up to 622 km range. Deliveries are being prioritized in cities like Mumbai, Pune, Delhi, and Gurugram, with vehicles delivered directly to homes via flat-bed trucks. Tesla has also updated its website, enabling vehicle registration across all states and union territories, expanding its reach. The Full Self-Driving (FSD) feature is listed as an optional add-on at Rs 6 lakh, although it will be introduced in India at a later date. The Model Y launch also coincides with the debut of Tesla’s India website, demonstrating the company’s commitment to expanding in India despite existing challenges related to EV policies and infrastructure.
