In a sweeping pre-election sweep, West Bengal police and enforcement agencies have confiscated unauthorized items worth ₹327.44 crore from February 26 to April 6, the Election Commission revealed Tuesday. With two-phase voting looming on April 23 and 29, these seizures aim to sanitize the electoral landscape.

Breaking down the numbers, the Chief Electoral Officer’s office detailed: ₹11.01 crore in undeclared cash, ₹57.71 crore in illegal booze, and a whopping ₹67.35 crore in narcotics. Precious metals fetched ₹38.55 crore in seizures, while miscellaneous contraband hit ₹162.80 crore.

Arms control has been rigorous—251 unlicensed firearms and parts, 401 rounds of ammunition, 127.7 kg of explosives, and 887 improvised bombs were seized by early April. Campaigns against rogue political posters are in full swing, ensuring a level playing field.

The ECI vows utmost fairness for the 294-seat Assembly polls, closely monitoring Model Code of Conduct violations and CAPF deployments. Security is beefed up like never before: 240,000 paramilitary troops from 2,400 companies, doubling past efforts. A landmark 20,000 women force members underscore inclusive protection strategies.

This unprecedented security blanket, especially the surge in female personnel, addresses past concerns over violence and intimidation. As parties rally supporters, these actions set the tone for a secure, credible electoral process in the politically charged state.
