  • Mizoram CM says sorry after daughter ‘misbehaves’ with doctor

    By Express News Service

GUWAHATI: Mizoram Chief Minister Zoramthanga has publicly apologised for the “misbehaviour” of his daughter Milari Chhangte with a doctor recently.

Zoramthanga tendered his apology through a statement posted on his Instagram page. He said he would not justify his daughter’s conduct.

He also met the doctor, a dermatologist based in Mizoram capital Aizawl, and apologised to him. He thanked the Mizoram unit of the Indian Medical Association (IMA) for not taking up any “stringent action” against his daughter.

In a viral video on social media, Chhangte can be seen rushing to the doctor at a clinic and hitting him before being separated by some present there. In another video, she is seen being led away by her security guard even as she was screaming at the doctor from outside the clinic.

Soon after the incident, her elder brother, Ramthansiama, had tendered an apology through social media. He said she was depressed after suffering wounds on her forehead following a fall the previous night.

Sources said the CM’s daughter got angry after the doctor had allegedly told her to get an appointment prior to her visit to the clinic for consultation.

The incident had triggered outrage among the members of the IMA and they registered a protest by wearing black badges at workplace on Saturday.

In a statement, the IMA’s Mizoram unit said it did not want recurrence of such acts of violence against medical practitioners in the future.

  • Mizoram BJP unit urges CM Zoramthanga to resolve boundary dispute with Assam and Tripura

    By PTI
AIZAWL: The Mizoram BJP unit in a letter to Chief Minister Zoramthanga has urged him to resolve the state’s boundary dispute with neighbouring Assam and Tripura.

In its letter to the CM on Monday, the Mizoram BJP unit said that the Centre was keen on solving the boundary disputes among the northeastern states.

It said that Union Home Minister Amit Shah had instructed all the northeastern states on at least two occasions to resolve inter-state border disputes through bilateral dialogue.

The letter said that the Mizo National Front (MNF) headed by Zoramthanga, which is part of the BJP led North East Democratic Alliance (NEDA), must find an opportunity to resolve the border dispute with Assam and Tripura at a time when the BJP is in power at the Centre and in the two neighbouring states.

Earlier, top leaders of Mizoram Presbyterian Church, the largest denomination in the state, had also urged Zoramthanga to take measures to resolve border disputes with neighbouring states.

Mizoram shares about 164.6 km long inter-state boundary with Assam and about 66 km with Tripura.

The border dispute between Mizoram and Assam is a long pending issue, which has been unresolved till date.

Several dialogues held since 1995 to resolve the border dispute have yielded little result.

The last border standoff between Mizoram and Assam took place on June 5 when unidentified people torched two abandoned farmhouses in the area claimed by both states.

  • Mizoram CM holds meeting with Myanmar’s foreign minister over situation amid coup

    By PTI
AIZAWL: Mizoram Chief Minister Zoramthanga on Sunday held a meeting with Myanmar’s Foreign Minister Zin Mar Aung on the current political situation and the hardships being faced by the Zo ethnic people in the neighbouring country, officials said.

Speaking at the virtual meeting, in which US-based Mizo leaders also participated, Zoramthanga expressed solidarity with the people of Myanmar.

“Had a fruitful meeting (online) this morning with Zin Mar Aung, Hon’ble Foreign Minister, Myanmar. Our thoughts and prayers are with Myanmar in these trying times,” the chief minister tweeted.

“It is our prayer that your sufferings and mental distress died down very soon,” he added.

The two leaders discussed the current political situation in Myanmar amid a coup in February, an official at the Chief Minister’s Office said.

The meeting was to extend solidarity and call for peace among the Zo ethnic people of Myanmar who have become victims of “persecution and atrocities” after the military junta took power in the neighbouring country, he said.

Fleeing atrocities, over 500 people from the neighbouring country have crossed over to Mizoram in the last few weeks, even as the Centre directed the four Myanmar- bordering Northeastern states to prevent illegal immigration and ensure expeditious deportation.

Mizoram shares a 510-km-long unfenced and porous international border with Myanmar.

On March 18, Zoramthanga had written to Prime Minister Narendra Modi seeking asylum and relief for the Myanmar nationals who have taken refuge in the country.

The chief minister said that India cannot turn a blind eye to the humanitarian crisis.

Most areas in Myanmar that share border with Mizoram are inhabited by the Chin communities, who share the same ancestry and ethnicity as the Mizos, he mentioned, dismissing the Union Home Ministry’s advisory of checking illegal influx as “not acceptable”.

Most of the Myanmar nationals taking refuge in Mizoram belong to the Chin community and are being provided relief and shelter by the local NGOs, officials said.

The state’s apex student body Mizo Zirlai Pawl (MZP) in collaboration with four other outfits on Saturday organised charity concerts in different parts of Aizawl to raise money for the Myanmarese refugees.

Over Rs 5.19 lakh was raised through the programme, MZP general secretary Lalnunmawia Pautu told PTI.

MZP president B Vanlaltana along with other leaders are visiting Delhi at present to raise the issue with the Centre.
