India’s diplomats in Geneva wasted no time in dismantling what they called a ‘hostile’ UN report criticizing the Waqf Amendment Act. Speaking at the Human Rights Council, Counselor Gaurav Kumar Thakur declared the findings by UN Special Rapporteur on minority issues, Professor Leverat, as factually flawed and reflective of deep-seated prejudice against the country.

The report claimed the Indian law hampers Muslims’ control over religious properties, but Thakur highlighted its progressive reforms: enhancing transparency, promoting gender parity, and streamlining administration. It notably strengthens smaller Muslim communities such as Dawoodi Bohras and Khoja Aga Khanis, granting them constitutional rights to manage their affairs independently.

Thakur pointed out the report’s reliance on biased sources, including fringe groups like the Indian American Muslim Council, whose agenda appears to weaponize India’s diversity for external narratives. In contrast, India’s constitutional framework robustly protects all minorities—religious, linguistic, or ethnic—allowing them to run educational bodies and select teaching languages freely.

The amendments mandate at least two Muslim women on waqf councils and boards, secure women’s inheritance in waqf properties, and ensure sectarian diversity in governance structures. This isn’t erosion of rights; it’s modernization. India’s unwavering dedication to multiculturalism shines through its institutions, which the UN expert conveniently overlooks. The episode underscores ongoing tensions between sovereign reforms and international oversight, with India firmly defending its democratic credentials.

GENEVA – United Nations Human Rights chief Volker Turk delivered a nuanced assessment of global democracy during the UNHRC’s 61st session, commending India’s civil society as a pillar of its enduring democratic heritage while raising red flags over Pakistan and China’s repressive tactics.

Reflecting on his participation in India’s AI Impact Summit, Turk praised local activists for their tireless efforts in fortifying democratic norms and shielding minorities. “Civil society in India is instrumental in maintaining the country’s rich democratic traditions and protecting minority rights,” he affirmed. “Safeguarding civic space is non-negotiable for true democracy.”

This positive note on India contrasts sharply with Turk’s rebukes of neighboring Pakistan, where two human rights lawyers recently received 17-year jail terms for alleged social media infractions. The High Commissioner decried such actions as emblematic of a shrinking space for dissent.

China faced similar scrutiny, with Turk appealing for an end to ambiguous legal provisions used to quash rights advocates. He demanded accountability for violations in Xinjiang targeting Uyghurs, Muslims, and Tibetans, alongside the release of those held without due process.

Elsewhere, Turk criticized Georgia’s curbs on public participation and Venezuela’s pattern of arbitrary arrests, some resolved through releases but many ongoing. “Emergency situations must be reviewed, and civil society granted access to public initiatives,” he insisted, pledging a comprehensive update on March 16.

Turk’s intervention underscores a critical divide: nations like India exemplifying inclusive governance versus those eroding basic liberties. As world leaders convene, his words serve as a clarion call for upholding universal human rights standards amid rising authoritarian pressures.

With Bangladesh’s general elections looming on February 12, campaign rhetoric has veered into dangerous territory. Several parties now claim opposing them equates to betraying Islam, a strategy exposed in a Thursday report as a recurring tool to demonize rivals amid legitimacy crises.

The report paints a grim picture of religious overreach nationwide: bans on music classes citing piety, vandalism at Sufi shrines, intimidation of drama troupes, and ideological overhauls in schoolbooks. In Prothom Alo, analyst Hasan Firdous delves into this history, linking it to the Pakistani military’s 1971 genocide against Bengalis, where faith was weaponized to excuse atrocities.

Firdous warns that religion’s political hijacking has accelerated. Parties flaunt Islamic nomenclature, leaving no doubt about their leanings. Empowered leaders then target minorities—echoing Ahmadis’ plight in Pakistan or Shia mosque bombings. In Bangladesh, Facebook comments alone spark mob violence against non-Muslims, incidents skyrocketing.

A fresh proposal from a political outfit to cap women’s workdays at five hours reveals another angle: cloaked as strategic planning, it’s designed to economically marginalize women, pushing them back into the home. Jamaat-e-Islami exemplifies duplicity—downplaying Sharia ambitions for electability, while TV appearances and street-level propaganda from mid- and low-tier members hail their ‘daripalla’ symbol as a sacred vote, promising heavenly rewards.

This hypocrisy lays bare the fault lines. Bangladesh’s democracy teeters as faith becomes a political cudgel, eroding secular foundations laid post-independence. The electorate faces a pivotal choice: succumb to divisive appeals or reclaim a pluralistic vision.

A Bangladeshi tribunal has dropped a bombshell by charging Hindu activist Chinmoy Krishna Das alongside 38 others for the shocking assassination of advocate Saiful Islam Alif outside Chittagong court last November. This ruling intensifies scrutiny on the interim government’s handling of minority-related violence.

Judge Mohammad Jahidul Haq of the Speedy Trial Tribunal listened intently to submissions before formalizing the charges. Speaking exclusively to The Daily Star, assistant public prosecutor Rehanul Wazed Chowdhury revealed that Chinmoy faces murder and abetment charges under IPC Sections 302 and 109, while others are implicated under varied provisions.

Currently, 23 of the accused are behind bars, but 16 fugitives pose a challenge to law enforcement. To avert chaos during Chinmoy’s appearance, authorities mobilized around 900 security forces, comprising RAB operatives and military personnel, transforming the court area into a fortress.

In a dramatic courtroom moment, Chinmoy rejected all allegations and pleaded for an independent probe, as his legal team failed to show up. The murder occurred during ferocious clashes on November 26, triggered by the denial of his bail in a separate sedition matter.

Arrested in Dhaka on November 25 and remanded the next day, Chinmoy’s detention ignited massive Hindu protests nationwide. Since Sheikh Hasina’s ouster and Yunus’s interim setup, reports of anti-Hindu assaults have surged, drawing sharp rebukes from New Delhi, which labels it ‘targeted oppression.’

This high-profile case not only tests Bangladesh’s judicial system but also highlights deepening religious divides, with global watchers urging swift justice to restore faith in institutions.

Maulana Mahmud Asad Madani, head of Jamiat Ulama-i-Hind, has warmly welcomed the Allahabad High Court’s historic pronouncement safeguarding non-affiliated madrasas from unwarranted government actions. Describing it as a triumph of constitutional supremacy, he highlighted its implications for minority rights across India.

Governments that boasted about closing religious schools now face a judicial rebuke, Madani observed. These moves were fundamentally flawed and self-defeating. The court’s stance empowers ongoing struggles, including Jamiat’s representation of Shravasti’s 30 madrasas and challenges to Uttarakhand’s stance.

He advised madrasa operators to continually improve governance and teaching standards, ensuring no room for opposition. The judgment firmly states that lack of formal recognition does not justify shutdowns or disruptions. UP rules, the court noted, offer no legal basis for such steps.

Echoing Supreme Court wisdom, the High Court upheld protections for self-reliant minority institutions under Article 30(1). Madani implored states to reassess policies, cease discriminatory practices, and honor judicial directives. ‘We will persist in defending rights constitutionally,’ he affirmed.

This ruling arrives amid heightened scrutiny of Islamic educational bodies. By invalidating blanket closures, it promotes balanced regulation over blanket bans. Madani commended the legal team and petitioners for their steadfast fight, marking this as a pivotal moment for educational autonomy in minority communities.

Mumbai’s political landscape heated up as Samajwadi Party prominent figure Abu Azmi fired off a letter to CM Devendra Fadnavis, slamming the appointment of non-Muslim Manoj Jadhav to head the Maharashtra Haj Committee as Executive Officer. Posted publicly on X, the missive calls for swift corrective action to restore legal order.

At its core, the dispute revolves around the Haj Committee’s statutory mandate. Established under a scheme tailored for Muslims, it ensures that Haj operations—from policy formulation to execution—respect Sharia principles and pilgrimage essentials. Azmi contends that installing a non-Muslim in a pivotal administrative post undermines this foundation, constituting an ultra vires act beyond legal authority.

He meticulously outlined how such a move defies the act’s intent for leadership to reside with knowledgeable Muslim committee members. This, Azmi warned, not only misuses power against the law but triggers constitutional violations under key articles guaranteeing equal protection, non-discrimination on religious grounds, freedom of religion, and denominational rights to administer institutions.

Judicial rulings have repeatedly affirmed that minority bodies deserve autonomy from state meddling, Azmi noted, bolstering his plea for revocation. The demand is clear: scrap the appointment and elevate a fitting Muslim from the elected ranks.

This isn’t just an administrative hiccup; it’s a flashpoint for larger issues of faith-based governance in secular India. As Fadnavis navigates coalition dynamics, Azmi’s outreach tests the government’s commitment to constitutional fidelity.

With full faith in the CM’s astute guidance, Azmi anticipates justice aligned with law and equity. The episode highlights persistent frictions in managing minority welfare committees, where tradition clashes with modern bureaucracy, keeping stakeholders on edge for the response.

Former J&K DGP SP Vaid has unleashed a scathing critique of the dire situation for Hindus in Pakistan and Bangladesh, declaring unequivocally that they possess the fundamental right to life. His powerful intervention has ignited debates on minority protections in the region.

Addressing a gathering, Vaid painted a grim picture of daily struggles endured by Hindu communities. Kidnappings, assaults, and property seizures form a pattern of persecution that demands urgent attention. ‘It’s heartbreaking to see families torn apart in the name of faith,’ he remarked.

Vaid delved into specifics, citing data from human rights watchdogs. In Pakistan, thousands of Hindus have fled to India seeking refuge, while Bangladesh witnesses sporadic riots targeting temples and homes. He criticized the lack of effective law enforcement and political will in both nations.

Advocating for a multi-pronged approach, Vaid suggested economic sanctions, UN resolutions, and bilateral talks. He commended India’s CAA as a lifeline for genuine refugees and called on global powers to spotlight these issues. ‘Silence is complicity,’ he warned.

The statement has drawn support from Hindu advocacy groups and opposition voices alike. It highlights India’s growing role as a protector of South Asian minorities. Vaid’s no-nonsense tone reflects his police background, urging immediate reforms.

As social media amplifies these concerns, pressure mounts on Pakistan and Bangladesh. Vaid’s plea transcends borders, championing universal human rights. This could mark a turning point in addressing long-ignored grievances, fostering hope for safer futures.

Pakistan Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif’s Diwali greetings to the nation’s Hindu community have been met with widespread criticism, with many online users highlighting the severe decline and ongoing persecution of…

Pakistan Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif’s Diwali greetings to the nation’s Hindu community have been met with widespread criticism, with many online users highlighting the severe decline and ongoing persecution of Hindus in the country. Sharif extended “heartfelt greetings” on the “auspicious occasion of Diwali,” wishing for the festival to “dispel darkness, foster harmony, and guide us all toward a future of peace, compassion, and shared prosperity.”

However, this message starkly contrasts with the grim reality faced by religious minorities. Social media commentators, including influencer Rishi Bagree, pointed out the dramatic reduction in Pakistan’s Hindu population since the 1947 Partition, when Hindus constituted approximately 15% of the populace. Today, this figure has plummeted to about 1.63%, representing roughly 3.8 million individuals within a total population of 240 million.

Critics denounced Sharif’s message as hypocritical, with some accusing the government of attempting to “whitewash genocide with Diwali greetings.” Concerns were raised about the “systematic persecution of Hindus, Christians, Sikhs, and Ahmadis,” questioning the sincerity of such gestures in bridging deep societal divides.

Recent incidents underscore the vulnerability of the Hindu community. In July 2023, the historic Mari Mata Temple in Karachi, over 150 years old, was demolished under the guise of being a dangerous structure. The revered Hinglaj Mata Mandir has also been a frequent target for extremists. Official figures indicate a troubling trend in reported violence against Hindus, with 241 cases in 2022, decreasing to 103 in 2023, and seeing a slight rise to 112 in the first ten months of 2024.

These sentiments stand in contrast to the divisive rhetoric previously espoused by Pakistan Army Chief General Asim Munir, who emphasized the fundamental differences between Pakistanis and Hindus, invoking the two-nation theory. His statements urged Pakistanis to teach their children that they are “fundamentally different from Hindus.”

The All India Muslim Personal Law Board (AIMPLB) has filed a writ petition in the Supreme Court, seeking the suspension of the ‘Umeed’ portal until the hearing of petitions challenging the Waqf Act 2025 is completed. The Board has requested the court to either halt the portal or direct the central government to withdraw its notification. The Board has labeled this action as unlawful and contempt of court. Dr. SQR Ilyas, the national spokesperson of the Board, stated that despite repeated appeals, the government launched the Umeed portal on June 6th and made the registration of Waqf properties mandatory. He added that this exerts illegal pressure on mutawallis (caretakers) and impacts the reliefs sought in the Supreme Court.

The persecution of Hindus in Bangladesh continues unabated, escalating from violence and displacement to starvation. Those attempting to provide aid face threats. Recently, Hindu religious leader Gopinath Das Brahmachari experienced similar intimidation, yet he vowed to continue relief efforts. In the Betgari Union of Rangpur district, approximately 20 Hindu families were targeted in three days of communal violence, leaving many homeless and destitute. Over 50 Hindu families were displaced due to looting, arson, and desecration. Several have fled their homes. Three Hindu-owned shops and multiple Tulsi Manch (platforms for worshiping the Tulsi plant) were vandalized. The attacks followed accusations of blasphemy against an 18-year-old Hindu youth, though local sources suggest he was framed with a fake account.
