  • Unnao rape case: Delhi HC grants interim bail to Ex-BJP MLA to attend daughter’s marriage

    The Delhi High Court on Monday granted interim bail to former Uttar Pradesh BJP MLA Kuldeep Singh Sengar, who is sentenced to life term imprisonment for raping a minor girl in Unnao in 2017, on his plea for attending his daughter’s marriage.

    A division bench comprising Justices Mukta Gupta and Poonam A. Bamba granted interim bail to Sengar for a period of 15 days – January 27 to February 10.

    During the hearing, the court had raised a concern, saying that Sengar’s daughter’s wedding ceremonies have been scheduled for so many days and whether everything can be completed in a few days.

    Counsel representing Sengar submitted before the court that he is the father and the ceremony dates are given by the priest.

    On December 19, Sengar approached the court seeking two months’ interim bail for attending his daughter’s wedding, which is scheduled on February 8, 2023, and ceremonies will start on January 18. As per the rape case involved by Sengar, the girl was kidnapped and raped by the BJP leader in 2017 when she was a minor.

    Sengar’s plea against the trial court’s order in the rape case is pending in the high court, with him having sought reliefs like quashing of the trial court’s December 16, 2019 judgment, which convicted him, and the December 20, 2019 order sentencing him to imprisonment till rest of his life.

    The trial court had convicted Sengar under various provisions, including Section 376 (2) (rape committed by a public servant) of IPC and also imposed an exemplary fine of Rs 25 lakh on him.

    The trial started on August 5, 2019, after the Supreme court on August 1 directed to transfer all five cases related to the matter from Unnao to Delhi.

    The top court had directed to hold a trial on a daily basis and complete it within 45 days.

  • UP: Two minors rape nine-year-old girl, record video

    MATHURA: A nine-year-old girl was allegedly raped by two minor boys, who also made a video of the act and threatened to make it viral on social media if she told anyone about it, police said.

    Station House Officer (SHO) of Highway Police Station Chhote Lal said on the basis of the complaint lodged by the relatives of the victim, an FIR has been registered and the girl has been sent for a medical examination.

    According to the relatives, the incident took place on Saturday evening when the girl was alone in the house. The boys, who live in the neighbourhood, entered the house and began molesting her.

    When she protested, they raped her.

    The accused also made a video of the incident and threatened to share it on social media platforms if the victim told anyone about it, according to the complaint.

  • Three police personnel suspended for ‘suppressing’ rape of specially-challenged girl in UP’s Bareilly

    BAREILY: Two police inspectors and a sub-inspector have been suspended for allegedly suppressing an incident of rape of a specially-challenged 13-year-old girl in this Uttar Pradesh district, officials said on Saturday.

    Police said the hearing-and-speech-impaired girl was allegedly raped by Chandrapal (24) on November 24. The incident was reported from a village located within the Seeshgarh police station limits.

    According to a complaint submitted to senior police officials, Inspector Ramavtar Singh, Inspector Naresh Pal and a sub-inspector took money from the accused and lodged an FIR of molestation instead of rape in connection with the incident.

    It has also been alleged that the accused police personnel made the victim change her clothes at a police outpost and misplaced the clothes she was wearing at the time of the incident, which could have been used as evidence against the accused.

    Superintendent of Police (Rural) Rajkumar Agarwal said, “A probe was ordered by the SSP following the complaint and the allegations against the accused police personnel were found to be true. The three accused personnel have been put under suspension.” The officer said the sections of rape will be added in the FIR.

  • Rajasthan: Two of five held for raping teenage girl arrested

    JAIPUR: Two of the five men booked for allegedly raping a minor, repeatedly, for more than a year, were arrested in Bundi district, police said on Sunday.

    The teenage girl has been sent to a shelter home, they said.

    According to police, the 13-year-old lived with her mother, who worked as a domestic help, and four brothers.

    Her father had died during the COVID-19 pandemic.

    The matter came to light after one of the girl’s relatives called a child helpline, explaining her family condition and expressing concern for her future.

    The volunteers rescued the minor and produced her before a Child Welfare Committee (CWC) on November 10.

    During counselling by CWC members, the survivor narrated her ordeal of sexual exploitation and alleged that five persons in her neighbourhood had been physically exploiting and raping her for the last one year, SHO at Lakheri police station, Mahesh Kumar told.

    On the report by CWC, the police lodged a case of rape against five persons under sections of the Indian Penal Code (IPC) and Protection of Children from Sexual Offences(POCSO) Act on Thursday and conducted a medical examination on the same day, he said.

    The survivor’s statements were also recorded before a magistrate under section 164 on Saturday, following which the police arrested two of the five accused, identified as Raghu Pandit (46) and Hemraj Soni (46) while the investigation against three other accused in the matter is underway, the SHO said.

    KHANDWA: A four-year-old girl was raped by a man and abandoned in a sugarcane field in Madhya Pradesh’s Khandwa district, police said on Tuesday.

    The child, who was found unconscious in the bushes on the field on Monday, is undergoing treatment at a hospital in Indore, an official said.

    The incident came to light when the girl was reported missing from her relative’s house in Jaswadi on Monday morning, superintendent of police (SP) Vivek Singh said.

    The police were informed and a search was launched for the missing girl, he said.

    During the probe, the police zeroed in on a 25-year-old man working at an eatery in the locality.

    The man had allegedly approached the victim’s family on Sunday night to borrow a cot, the official said.

    On interrogation, the man admitted to have taken the girl to a field and raped her.

    Based on the information, the missing child was found unconscious at the field, he said.

    The girl was initially taken to the district hospital, but later shifted to Indore for treatment, the official said.

    The accused allegedly abducted the girl while she was sleeping, took her to the field where he raped her and later threw her in the bushes, he said.

    The police had initially registered a case under section 363 (kidnapping) of the Indian Penal Code (IPC), and later added section 376 (rape) and relevant provisions of the Protection of Children from Sexual Offences (POCSO) Act, the official said.

    While the accused has also claimed the involvement of another person in the crime, the same is not confirmed and the police are investigating the claim, he said.

  • DNA test of rape survivor’s child gets man arrested for rape committed in 1994

    SHAHJAHANPUR: A man was arrested 28 years after he allegedly raped a minor girl when his DNA matched with the boy born as a result of the crime, police said on Wednesday.

    Superintendent of Police (City) Sanjay Kumar told PTI that a 12-year-old girl living in the city was allegedly raped by two brothers in 1994, after which she had given birth to a boy.

    The case regarding the incident was lodged on March 4, 2021, at Sadar Bazar Police Station.

    Kumar said that following the victim’s complaint, the accused, Guddu and Naki Hasan, both brothers, were asked to undergo a DNA test, along with the victim and her son.

    The officer said the test confirmed that the boy had the same DNA as the two accused, following which police arrested Guddu, while a hunt is on for Naki Hasan, who is absconding.

    According to police, the victim, when she was a minor, lived with her relatives in an area under Sadar Bazar Police Station.

    Naki Hassan and his younger brother Guddu raped her several times when she was alone at home, police said.

    She later gave her out-of-wedlock child to a relative and married another man.

    A few years later, when her husband came to know about the rape incident, he abandoned her, they said.

  • Minor girl dies after suspected gang-rape, son of local TMC leader held

    KOLKATA: A minor girl died after she was allegedly gang-raped at a birthday party in Hanskhali in West Bengal’s Nadia district, police said on Sunday.

    The girl’s family claimed that the main accused is the son of a Trinamool Congress panchayat member, who has been arrested for further investigation, they said.

    The parents of the minor, a student of Class 9, lodged a complaint against the accused at Hanskhali police station on Saturday, four days after the incident.

    According to the complaint, the girl went to the residence of the accused on Monday afternoon to attend his birthday party, but she returned home in an ailing condition and died soon after.

    “Our daughter was bleeding profusely and had severe abdominal pain after she came back from the party at the residence of the local TMC leader’s son, and before we could take her to hospital, she died.”

    “From the sequence of events and after talking to the people present at the party, we are sure she was gang-raped by the accused and his friends,” the girl’s mother told reporters.

    She also alleged that a group of people forcibly took the minor’s body for cremation even before her death certificate was issued.

    Reacting to the development, senior TMC leader and the state’s Minister of Women and Child Development, Sashi Panja, said the ruling party has zero tolerance for abuse of minors and women.

    “There should not be any politics over the incident. Police will do everything possible to investigate and take further action,” she said.

    Meanwhile, opposition BJP has called for a 12-hour bandh in Hanskhali in protest against the incident.

  • Man rapes and kills teen in Chhattisgarh’s Surajpur, tries to pass it off as suicide

    KORBA: A teenage girl was allegedly raped and killed by a 23-year-old man in Chhattisgarh’s Surajpur district and the latter tried to pass it off as a case of suicide, police said on Sunday.

    The incident took place on March 24 and during a probe into it, the police on Saturday arrested the man, identified as Sabir Ali alias Baba Khan, who allegedly strangled the victim to death and then hanged the body from a ceiling fan at her house in Bhatgaon police station limits, Surajpur Addl SP Harish Rathore said.

    As per preliminary investigation, the victim, a Class XII student, appeared for her practical exam on Thursday and then returned home in Surajpur, located around 300 km from the state capital Raipur. Her mother was in Bilaspur to take care of her ailing father, who was admitted in a hospital there, while her younger brother had gone out of home to play, the official said.

    “On finding the victim alone in the house, the accused went there. He allegedly raped her and then strangled her to death with her scarf. The man then hanged the body from a ceiling fan and wrote a note on her hand with a pen to make it appear as a case of suicide,” the official said.

    Later, the victim’s brother and neighbours found her hanging and informed the police, he said. Based on the investigation, the accused was arrested and booked under Indian Penal Code Sections 302 (murder), 376 (rape) and other relevant provisions, the official said.

    “The exact age of the deceased is yet to be ascertained and if she is found to be a minor, provisions of the Protection of Children from Sexual Offences (POCSO) Act will be included in the case,” he added. On Saturday, a large number of people gathered in Jarhi area of Surajpur to pay tributes to the victim and demanded death sentence for the accused.

  • Man handed five-year jail term for sexual harassment of girl child in Uttar Pradesh

    MUZAFFARNAGAR: A POCSO court in Shamli’s Kairana has sentenced a man to five years in jail for sexually harassing a girl child last year, officials said on Saturday.

    Apart from the quantum of punishment, Special Judge Mumtaz Ali on Friday evening imposed a fine of Rs 10,000 on convict, Jai Bhagwan, after holding him guilty under Sections 354 (assault or criminal force to woman with intent to outrage her modesty) of the Indian Penal Code and Sections 9 and 10 of the Protection of Children from Sexual Offences (POCSO) Act here.

    According to special lawyer Pushpendra Malik, the five-year-old girl was sexually harassed by Bhagwan in Adarsh Mandi police station area of Shamli district on August 1, 2020. n another case, one Monu alias Kokin was handed 10 years and 11 months imprisonment under charges of the UP Gangsters Act by a special court in Muzaffarnagar.

    Besides, Special Judge Radhey Shyam Yadav has also imposed a fine of Rs 10,000 on the convict. Monu was booked under the Act for involvement in several robbery cases in Bhora Kalan police station area in the district in 2011.

  • Man arrested for raping teenage girl in UP’s Muzaffarnagar

    MUZAFFARNAGAR: A man was arrested for allegedly raping a 16-year-old girl here in a village under Budhana area here, police said on Friday.

    Station House Officer Rajiv Kumar said a case was registered against Gulab Singh on Thursday and he has been arrested.

    A medical examination confirmed rape.

    The girl was produced before a magistrate and gave her statement under Section 164 of CrPC.

    In their complaint, the girl’s family alleged that Singh had promised he would marry the girl and established physical relations with her.

    He later refused to marry her and allegedly threatened her of dire consequences if she disclosed the matter to anyone.
