In a key diplomatic shuffle, the Indian government has appointed 2006-batch IFS officer Anita Shukla as the country’s next envoy to Ecuador. The decision, confirmed by the Ministry of External Affairs, signals New Delhi’s intent to deepen ties with the Latin American nation.

Shukla, who presently holds the position of Joint Secretary at the ministry, has a proven track record in foreign policy and training. She will soon relocate to Quito to take up her ambassadorial duties.

A standout in her career, Shukla directed operations at the Sushma Swaraj Institute, focusing on foreigners’ training and non-representational grades. Her oversight ensured seamless skill development for diplomats worldwide.

She played a pivotal role in leading delegations, including the landmark late-2025 special course for diplomats from mid and South America plus Caribbean islands—a first-of-its-kind program that highlighted India’s soft power.

Her diplomatic footprint extends to Sweden, where as Counselor (Political, Press & Information) at the Indian Embassy in Stockholm, she stepped up as Charge d’Affaires. This experience honed her skills in multilateral engagements.

Diplomatic bonds between India and Ecuador date back to 1969. Fast-forward to November 2025: India opened its resident mission in Quito, a game-changer spearheaded by MoS Pabitra Margherita’s tour across Ecuador, Bolivia, and Cuba from November 4-10.

Key outcomes included an MoU for training institute partnerships and offers for ITEC slots in cutting-edge areas like AI and digital tech. Plans were set for Foreign Office talks in India by mid-2026.

Margherita’s itinerary featured homage at Quito’s Heroes’ Memorial, plus dialogues with traders and the Indian diaspora, injecting momentum into economic partnerships.

With Shukla at the helm, expect accelerated progress in trade, investment, and cultural exchanges between the two vibrant democracies.

In a bid to expedite stalled passport applications, Ghaziabad’s Regional Passport Office will organize a dedicated Lok Adalat on February 24. Following directives from the Ministry of External Affairs, the session promises to settle as many as 50 pending cases, bringing much-needed relief to frustrated applicants.

The event runs from 3 PM to 5 PM on Tuesday, where individuals can directly approach officers with their concerns. Regional Passport Officer Anuj Swaroop will oversee proceedings, engaging personally to diagnose issues and deliver immediate solutions wherever possible. This setup minimizes the hassle of multiple trips and promotes accountability.

Swroop highlighted the citizen-centric focus, noting the cap at 50 cases due to time constraints. ‘Come prepared with documents,’ he advised, urging early arrivals to maximize chances. Typical delays stem from incomplete papers or police verifications, which officers aim to fast-track on the day.

Applicants seeking pre-event advice can email the office for tailored guidance. This digital support complements the physical Lok Adalat, making services more accessible.

These special courts underscore the government’s push for time-bound passport processing amid growing international mobility needs. By bridging the gap between bureaucracy and people, the initiative not only clears queues but also sets a precedent for responsive administration in Ghaziabad and beyond.

India’s diplomatic landscape sees another seasoned hand taking charge. Naghma Mohammad Mallik, from the 1991 IFS batch, is set to become the country’s Ambassador to the Marshall Islands Republic, succeeding her current position as Ambassador to Japan effective 2025.

The Ministry of External Affairs confirmed that Mallik will assume duties shortly. Nestled in the vast central Pacific, the Marshall Islands form part of Micronesia, strategically located between Hawaii and Australia—a key player in regional maritime security.

Educated at St. Stephen’s College with a degree in English Literature and a Master’s in Sociology from Delhi School of Economics, Mallik’s linguistic prowess includes English, French, Hindi, Urdu, and Malayalam, aiding her in diverse postings.

Kicking off in Paris at the Indian Embassy and UNESCO Mission, her career trajectory included pivotal roles in New Delhi: Desk Officer in West Europe, staffer in PM I.K. Gujral’s office, and trailblazing as the first female Deputy Chief of Protocol.

Overseas assignments followed: First Secretary in Nepal, Counsellor in Sri Lanka, Spokesperson and Director (Eurasia) in MEA, Deputy Chief of Mission in Thailand. She capably led as Ambassador to Tunisia and High Commissioner to Brunei, while domestically steering Policy Planning and Africa divisions.

From Poland’s embassy helm to Japan’s diplomatic forefront, and now to the Pacific atolls, Mallik’s career spans continents and crises. Hailing from a Kerala-rooted family in Delhi, her story is one of relentless ascent in international service.

As India eyes deeper Pacific engagement, Mallik’s expertise promises robust representation, fostering trade, security, and cultural exchanges in this vital oceanic domain.

India has strongly condemned China’s recent “arbitrary actions,” citing the detention of an Indian national from Arunachal Pradesh at Shanghai airport as a detrimental move that could hinder efforts to rebuild trust. The Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) spokesperson emphasized that such incidents are counterproductive to normalizing bilateral relations and underscored that maintaining peace along the border is crucial for the overall development of India-China ties.

Arunachal Pradesh, the MEA reiterated, is an “integral and inalienable” part of India, a fact that China’s assertions cannot alter. The detained individual, Pema Wang Thongdok, reported being held for 18 hours on November 21 after Chinese immigration officials questioned her Indian passport due to her birthplace being Arunachal Pradesh.

China’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs had previously rejected the allegations, claiming their actions were regulatory and reiterating their claims over the Indian state. The MEA, however, explicitly rejected this response, stating that such “arbitrary actions” undermine the ongoing efforts by both nations towards mutual understanding and relationship normalization.

The spokesperson reiterated India’s clear and consistent stance that Arunachal Pradesh is an indisputable part of India. He also highlighted that peace and tranquility in border regions are a fundamental prerequisite for the continued and overall progress of the India-China bilateral relationship. He added that collaborative efforts have been made to maintain this peace, paving the way for people-centric engagements.

Relations between India and China have been strained since the 2020 border standoff. While recent months have seen steps towards normalization, including disengagement from conflict points and the resumption of direct flights, incidents like this detention cast a shadow over these positive developments.

India has firmly responded to China’s recent statements concerning the detention of an Indian national from Arunachal Pradesh at Shanghai Pudong International Airport. The Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) reiterated the unequivocal stance that Arunachal Pradesh is an inseparable and integral part of India. This assertion comes after an incident where a UK-based resident from Arunachal Pradesh, traveling to Japan, was allegedly detained and subjected to questioning about her origin by Chinese immigration officials.

According to reports, Chinese officials reportedly declared her Indian passport invalid and claimed that Arunachal Pradesh is not part of India, even allegedly mocking her identity. The MEA spokesperson highlighted that the woman was in transit with a valid passport and that the actions by Chinese authorities violated international air travel norms and their own transit visa regulations, which permit up to 24 hours stay without a visa. India has lodged formal protests in both New Delhi and Beijing. Consular officials from the Indian consulate in Shanghai swiftly assisted the traveler upon learning of the incident, ensuring her welfare.

China, however, has denied allegations of detention or harassment. A spokesperson for the Chinese Ministry of Foreign Affairs stated that border officials followed standard procedures and protected the passenger’s rights. This incident has reignited China’s long-standing territorial claims over Arunachal Pradesh, which it refers to as ‘Zangnan’, asserting it as Chinese territory and not recognizing the Indian state’s existence. India maintains that its sovereignty over Arunachal Pradesh is indisputable and not subject to change by any external claims.

India has issued a resolute statement to China, affirming that Arunachal Pradesh is an inseparable and integral part of India. This firm stance comes in response to statements made by China regarding the detention of an Indian national from Arunachal Pradesh at Shanghai’s international airport. The Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) spokesperson emphasized that India’s claim over Arunachal Pradesh is a self-evident fact that China’s denials cannot alter.

The incident involved a resident of Arunachal Pradesh, who was traveling from the UK to Japan with a transit stop in Shanghai. Reports indicate that Chinese immigration officials detained the individual, questioned the validity of her Indian passport, and allegedly made remarks asserting that Arunachal Pradesh is not part of India. She was reportedly held for approximately 18 hours.

India has formally protested this action, highlighting that it potentially violated international air travel norms and China’s own transit regulations. The Indian consulate in Shanghai was reportedly alerted and provided assistance to the traveler. Meanwhile, China’s Foreign Ministry has denied allegations of harassment, stating that border officials followed standard procedures and ensured the passenger’s rights. China has also reiterated its territorial claims over Arunachal Pradesh, which it refers to as “Zangnan.”

India has officially elevated its Technical Mission in Kabul to the full status of the Embassy of India in Afghanistan. This significant upgrade, effective immediately, underscores India’s deepening commitment to bilateral relations and cooperation with the Afghan nation.

The Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) stated that this decision clearly demonstrates India’s strong intent to enhance collaboration across all sectors of mutual interest. The move follows discussions held during the recent visit of the Afghan Foreign Minister to India, where the restoration of embassy status was agreed upon.

The newly reinstated Embassy is expected to play a crucial role in supporting Afghanistan’s long-term development, humanitarian assistance, and crucial capacity-building initiatives. These efforts are designed to align with the priorities and aspirations of the Afghan people.

During a meeting on October 10th, India’s External Affairs Minister engaged in extensive talks with the Afghan Foreign Minister. The discussions covered a broad spectrum of shared regional concerns and significant geopolitical developments. India reaffirmed its enduring friendship with the Afghan people, highlighting the deep-rooted cultural and historical connections between the two countries. India reiterated its steadfast support for Afghanistan’s developmental goals and national progress.

India has issued a strong rebuke against Pakistan, accusing Islamabad of consistently sponsoring terrorist activities and deflecting blame for its internal shortcomings onto neighboring nations. The Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) systematically debunked Pakistan’s claims regarding regional instability, highlighting a long-standing pattern of interference and the harboring of outlawed groups. New Delhi pointed to Pakistan’s alleged support for entities like the Afghan Taliban, Lashkar-e-Taiba, Jaish-e-Mohammed, and the Haqqani Network. The MEA spokesperson emphasized that Pakistan’s frustration with Afghanistan asserting its sovereignty is a clear indicator of its problematic regional conduct. India reiterated its unwavering commitment to Afghanistan’s sovereignty, territorial integrity, and independence. This diplomatic confrontation follows accusations by Pakistan’s Defence Minister, who baselessly claimed Afghanistan’s Taliban government was engaged in a proxy war on India’s behalf and alleged clandestine ‘plans’ during a recent visit of Afghan officials to India.

New Delhi is clarifying its position following a controversy over the exclusion of female journalists from a press conference hosted by Afghanistan’s Taliban Foreign Minister, Amir Khan Muttaqi. The Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) has officially stated that India ‘had no role or involvement’ in the media interaction that took place in the capital on Friday. This statement comes after the press conference, held at the Afghan Embassy in New Delhi after Muttaqi’s talks with India’s External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar, drew significant criticism for its all-male attendance. The visit marked the first by a Taliban minister since the group’s return to power in 2021. While discussions covered vital bilateral issues such as trade, humanitarian aid, and security, the press event’s lack of inclusivity overshadowed these developments. Reports suggest that despite potential Indian recommendations for broader media participation, the Taliban delegation ultimately controlled the guest list, a move that reinforces concerns about their restrictive gender policies. During the event, Muttaqi responded to questions about Afghan women by referencing differing national customs and asserting that Afghanistan’s security has improved. The incident brings renewed international focus to the severe restrictions the Taliban has imposed on women and girls since August 2021, including bans on higher education and limitations on employment, actions widely condemned by the UN.

The Indian government has refuted claims made by NATO Chief Mark Rutte regarding a phone conversation between Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Russian President Vladimir Putin. Rutte had alleged that Modi contacted Putin to discuss ending the war in Ukraine, purportedly due to pressure from US tariffs. The Indian Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) spokesperson, Randhir Jaiswal, dismissed Rutte’s statement as false and baseless. Jaiswal stated that no such conversation took place between the two leaders. The MEA emphasized that such statements from NATO should be avoided and that India’s decisions on energy imports are made with national interests and economic security in mind.
