Union Minister G Kishan Reddy has unveiled ambitious AI pilots in India’s mining industry, aimed at skyrocketing production, slashing theft, and elevating operational efficiency and worker safety. Speaking in New Delhi on Wednesday, Reddy emphasized the technology’s trial phase as a game-changer for the sector.

‘AI holds immense promise for boosting output in our mines,’ Reddy told reporters. ‘Beyond productivity, it’s key to curbing theft and improving both efficiency and safety protocols.’ Officials from the Mines Ministry are delving into cutting-edge applications at major AI forums to refine these strategies.

This push aligns with broader governmental efforts showcased at the India AI Impact Summit 2026. Structured around three core pillars—people, planet, and progress—and seven working groups, the summit fosters frameworks for ethical AI deployment across economies and societies.

Union Minister Prahlad Joshi spotlighted AI’s welfare impact, noting its role in delivering aid to 80 crore-plus citizens via PM Garib Kalyan Anna Yojana. Innovations like smart PDS and Ann Chakra have slashed costs by 250 crore through route optimization, pinpointing optimal warehouses effortlessly.

In the energy domain, Minister Manohar Lal underscored AI’s transformative power. ‘Real-time insights from AI will solve intractable power supply challenges, guaranteeing uninterrupted electricity for all,’ he said. These revelations paint a picture of AI as India’s engine for inclusive growth and sectoral excellence.

India’s mining communities stand to gain immensely from the transformative labor codes, according to Union Minister. In an exclusive interview, the minister detailed how these laws will fortify social protections for the backbone of the nation’s mineral industry.

Consolidating 29 outdated laws into four modern codes, the reforms target the unique perils of mining – from cave-ins and respiratory ailments to economic instability. The Code on Social Security extends ESIC benefits to all mine workers, regardless of contract status, covering medical care, disability pensions, and funeral expenses. Migrant workers, a significant portion of the 15 lakh mine labor force, will receive portable health cards for seamless coverage across states.

The minister highlighted the integration of technology: a unified labor portal will enable real-time tracking of contributions and claims. ‘Imagine a miner in Jharkhand accessing his provident fund balance via mobile while working in Odisha – that’s the future we’re building,’ he said.

Beyond benefits, the codes mandate risk assessments, emergency protocols, and worker representation on safety boards. The Occupational Safety Code sets stringent standards for ventilation, machinery, and personal protective equipment. Funding for these initiatives will come from a cess on mineral production, ensuring sustainability.

Critics point to enforcement gaps in small-scale mines, where 70% of accidents occur. The government plans surprise audits and a dedicated helpline for grievances. With coal and metal mining critical to India’s $5 trillion economy goal, empowered workers mean safer, more efficient operations. This policy shift signals a humane approach to industrial progress.

A serious accident has occurred at the Gua iron ore mine in West Singhbhum, operated by Steel Authority of India Limited (SAIL). A 50-ton water tanker, reportedly en route for dust suppression, overturned unexpectedly on Thursday afternoon. The incident, which took place around noon near a sharp turning point within the mine, resulted in severe injuries to the vehicle’s driver and a SAIL employee named Rajkumar Singh. Eyewitness accounts suggest the heavy tanker lost balance while ascending a slope, leading to the driver losing control. The extreme weight of the vehicle caused the cabin to be crushed, trapping the operator inside.

An explosion at the Chirmiri open cast coal mine in Chhattisgarh’s Manendragarh-Chirmiri-Bharatpur district has resulted in injuries to three workers, including two women. The incident occurred on Monday afternoon while a team was preparing for a scheduled blasting operation. Seven to eight workers were reportedly engaged in laying explosives on the coal bed when a sudden blast took place. Rock fragments were dislodged, striking workers and nearby vehicles. The injured were promptly transported to the SECL regional hospital in Kurasia, Chirmiri. Officials stated that all three sustained minor injuries and are in stable condition, with expected discharge soon. A preliminary assessment suggests a possible technical fault may have caused the premature detonation. An internal investigation is underway to ascertain the precise cause, examining potential equipment malfunctions, procedural oversights, or human error. Operations at the mine have been temporarily suspended for safety evaluations. This incident highlights ongoing safety concerns within the mining sector and the need for rigorous preventative measures.
