In a move to fortify neighborly bonds, China and Vietnam will conduct their 10th Border Defense Friendship Exchange in mid-March. Spanning Guangxi Zhuang Autonomous Region in China and Quang Ninh Province in Vietnam, the program extends to ports and Beibu Gulf territories.

Participants will engage in multifaceted activities designed to enhance interoperability. These encompass joint naval patrols, coordinated training drills, medical aid along the border, cultural exchanges, sports competitions involving troops and residents, and a solemn tribute at the martyrs’ memorial.

Defense Ministers Rajnath Singh and Catherine Vautrin chaired the sixth India-France Annual Defense Dialogue in Bengaluru, announcing the extension of their landmark defense cooperation agreement by another 10 years. A standout outcome: the Hammer missile, a sophisticated guided munition for Rafale aircraft, will now be produced domestically through a new partnership.

Discussions delved into co-development of equipment, cutting-edge tech collaboration, and direct ties between defense industries. The agreement’s renewal reflects mutual trust and shared strategic visions beyond mere transactions.

Bharat Electronics Limited and Safran Electronics & Defense inked an MoU for a joint venture, propelling India’s ‘Aatmanirbhar Bharat’ goals by localizing high-tech missile production. This will significantly augment the Indian Air Force’s firepower, complementing its Rafale fleet and ongoing procurement talks.

Military interoperability took center stage with plans for cross-postings of army officers, enhancing training, strategic alignment, and collaborative operations. Singh emphasized India’s proactive stance in regional security, providing aid in defense, maritime safety, and humanitarian efforts, while flagging Pakistan-backed terrorism.

Vautrin expressed gratitude for India’s hosting and endorsed making joint exercises yearly. Held against a backdrop of shifting global dynamics and the Indian Ocean’s strategic importance, this engagement solidifies a robust, enduring alliance poised to shape future security architectures.

In a significant diplomatic stride, US Army Secretary Daniel P. Driscoll held talks with Indian Army Chief General Upendra Dwivedi in New Delhi on January 25. The agenda spotlighted strengthening army-to-army relations, expanding joint operations, and upholding joint vows for international stability.

Conversations delved into future collaboration opportunities, from advanced training programs to seamless professional exchanges. The duo stressed amplifying joint exercises and interoperability to counter emerging threats in the region. This meeting arrives at a opportune moment, reinforcing the upward trajectory of Indo-US strategic ties.

Experts note that the partnership rests on common principles and strategic alignment. Building on the landmark 10-year defense framework inked in Kuala Lumpur by Rajnath Singh and Pete Hegseth, recent forums like the 22nd Military Cooperation Group in Hawaii advanced discussions on AI integration, cyber resilience, and industrial synergies.

Additional layers include Admiral Dinesh K Tripathi’s US trip to bolster naval ties in the Indo-Pacific and a key air force exercise last November that honed tactical coordination. Together, these efforts weave a tapestry of comprehensive military synergy.

Looking ahead, this engagement heralds intensified cooperation, ensuring both militaries remain agile and united in promoting a rules-based global order. The path forward promises innovative solutions to pressing security dilemmas.

Russia and India have solidified a pivotal military logistics agreement, the Reciprocal Exchange of Logistic Support (RELOS), signaling a significant shift in South Asian geopolitical dynamics. The Russian State Duma swiftly ratified the pact, just prior to President Vladimir Putin’s state visit to New Delhi. This groundbreaking deal facilitates seamless interoperability, allowing military forces from both nations to utilize each other’s bases, airspace, and ports with comprehensive logistical support. This includes fuel, maintenance, supplies, and operational deployment for warships, aircraft, and ground troops. The agreement explicitly covers joint exercises, training, humanitarian aid, and disaster relief, while also leaving ample room for unspecified future strategic collaborations. This move, underscored by Russian officials as a crucial step in strengthening their ‘strategic and comprehensive’ relationship, effectively establishes a formidable military support network. For Pakistan, this enhanced Indo-Russian military alliance presents a concerning development, especially as it faces its own regional challenges.

Defense analysts have confirmed that advanced JF-17 Block III fighter jets, initially seen in Azerbaijan for an exercise, have officially been integrated into the Azerbaijani Air Force. What was perceived…

Defense analysts have confirmed that advanced JF-17 Block III fighter jets, initially seen in Azerbaijan for an exercise, have officially been integrated into the Azerbaijani Air Force. What was perceived as a training mission was, in fact, the clandestine handover of these sophisticated combat aircraft from Pakistan to Baku.

The jets made a notable public appearance during Azerbaijan’s Victory Day parade on November 8, 2025, with all Pakistani insignia conspicuously removed. Piloted by Azerbaijani airmen, their flypast signaled a complete transfer and operational readiness within Azerbaijan’s defense capabilities.

Pakistan has reportedly delivered the first contingent of three JF-17 Block III multirole fighters, including a dual-seat trainer, to phase out Azerbaijan’s older MiG-29 interceptors and trainers. The Azerbaijani presidency has officially announced the arrival of five JF-17 Thunder Block III fighters, comprising four single-seat and one twin-seat variant, now part of their air defense force.

This delivery underscores the deepening strategic partnership between Pakistan and Azerbaijan, a development highlighted by Pakistani Prime Minister Muhammad Shahbaz Sharif during the parade. The aerial demonstration featured the jets flying in a tight formation over Baku.

The aircraft flew without national markings, indicating a transitional period before full operational deployment. This public display confirmed the transfer, making Azerbaijan the fourth nation to operate the JF-17, following Pakistan, Myanmar, and Nigeria.

Footage confirms these same aircraft participated in joint exercises with the Pakistan Air Force in October, bearing full Pakistani markings at the time. Ahead of the parade, these markings were removed, though serial numbers remained visible, verifying the exchange. For instance, aircraft serial number 24-322 was documented with Pakistani livery upon arrival and later in Azerbaijani colors during the parade.

The JF-17 Block III induction is part of a significant bilateral defense agreement. In February 2024, Azerbaijan signed a $1.6 billion contract for these aircraft, encompassing training and ordnance. A single Block III was showcased to Azerbaijani officials at the Azerbaijan International Defence Exhibition (ADEX) in September 2024. Further building on this, Pakistan announced a larger export deal in June 2025 for 40 JF-17 Block III jets worth $4.6 billion, marking Pakistan’s largest defense export to date.

The November parade showcased the initial batch, illustrating the swift execution of the defense pact. Subsequent deliveries are planned in phases, synchronized with pilot training and weapons integration to ensure full operational capability.

Developed jointly by China’s Chengdu Aircraft Corporation and Pakistan Aeronautical Complex, the JF-17 Thunder is a versatile, single-engine, fourth-generation fighter designed to replace older aircraft. It boasts a top speed of Mach 1.8 and can carry up to 1,500 kg of ordnance. The Block III variant features advanced systems like AESA radar, a helmet-mounted sight, and a digital fly-by-wire system, capable of employing advanced air-to-air and air-to-ground munitions.

The JF-17 Block III offers a substantial upgrade to Azerbaijan’s air power, enhancing combat effectiveness with its advanced radar and missile capabilities. The twin-seat variant will be crucial for pilot training, ensuring a smooth transition and bolstering Azerbaijan’s regional deterrence posture.

A groundbreaking defence agreement between Israel and Germany, valued at 2 billion euros, marks a significant turning point in international military cooperation. This deal, focusing on Israeli-made Spike anti-tank missiles,…

A groundbreaking defence agreement between Israel and Germany, valued at 2 billion euros, marks a significant turning point in international military cooperation. This deal, focusing on Israeli-made Spike anti-tank missiles, underscores a profound historical reversal, with Germany now equipping its military with advanced technology from a nation once targeted by Nazi Germany. Israeli officials have described the agreement as one that “turns history on its head,” highlighting the dramatic evolution of the relationship between the two countries.

This unprecedented partnership comes as German Chancellor Friedrich Merz praised Israel’s role in regional security, stating at the G7 summit that Israel was performing “the dirty work for all of us.” This sentiment signifies a deep trust in Israel’s defence capabilities, a stark contrast to historical animosities.

Germany is embarking on a substantial expansion of its defence spending, aiming to create the continent’s most formidable military. Following years of underfunding, the German armed forces are set to receive significant investment. Plans include recruiting young individuals through a lottery system and acquiring a vast array of new equipment, estimated at 37.7 billion euros. A substantial portion of this enhanced military strength will rely on sophisticated Israeli defence technology, including missiles, drones, and air-defence systems.

Leaked documents reveal the scale of this commitment, with significant allocations for Israeli drones from Elbit and ammunition for Heron drones. The 2 billion euro Spike missile deal represents one of Israel’s largest European defence procurements. Furthermore, intelligence cooperation has been evident, with Mossad assisting Berlin in recent arrests. Germany also previously acquired the Arrow-3 missile defence system from Israel for 4 billion euros in 2023, a system capable of intercepting intercontinental ballistic missiles.

Major General Amir Baram of Israel’s Ministry of Defence expressed pride in this new era, stating, “Germany’s trust in our capabilities sends a message of leaving historical pain behind. We are proud that our systems are now part of Germany’s new army.” Chancellor Merz himself has personal ties to the Holocaust’s history, with his grandfather having been a Nazi party member. His recent emotional engagement at a reopened Munich synagogue underscores the weight of this historical context.

Despite the strong bilateral defence ties, Merz’s pro-Israel stance has drawn criticism within Germany, particularly concerning the conflict in Gaza. While Germany has previously paused weapons shipments to the region, Merz has acknowledged the complexities of the escalating humanitarian crisis. Israel, in turn, has responded to domestic German criticism by stating, “When friends like Merz offer criticism, we listen carefully.”

Armenia is on the verge of finalizing a substantial $3.5 to $4 billion arms agreement with India, a significant move amid escalating tensions with Azerbaijan. This landmark deal is expected to encompass advanced air defense systems, potent missile platforms, and crucial artillery, significantly bolstering Armenia’s defense capabilities. It also marks a pivotal expansion of India’s strategic influence in the vital South Caucasus region.

The focal point of the agreement includes the highly advanced Akash-NG missile system. Renowned for its superior interception prowess and extended range, the Akash-NG is anticipated to fortify Armenia’s multi-layered air defense network. The system previously garnered attention for its performance during India’s ‘Operation Sindoor.’

Furthermore, Armenia has expressed keen interest in acquiring India’s formidable BrahMos supersonic cruise missile. This missile system is recognized for its offensive capabilities and has a history of demonstrated effectiveness. The strategic acquisition is viewed by defense analysts as a transformative upgrade for Armenia’s military readiness.

This burgeoning defense partnership also serves to amplify India’s defense export objectives and champions its ‘Make in India’ initiative, showcasing indigenous technological advancements on the global stage. The collaboration signifies a growing trend of nations seeking advanced, reliable defense solutions from India. Analysts anticipate this deal will reshape regional military dynamics and underscore India’s expanding role in international defense supply chains.

President Donald Trump expressed optimism following his recent high-level meeting with Chinese President Xi Jinping, suggesting the summit would usher in an era of ‘everlasting peace and success’ for both the United States and China. Trump shared his positive assessment on social media, stating that the ‘G2 meeting’ was highly beneficial for both nations. He further declared that this encounter would pave the way for enduring tranquility and prosperity. Trump’s remarks came after the two leaders convened in Busan, South Korea, against the backdrop of persistent trade disputes between the two global economic powers. Following their discussion, Trump announced a significant reduction in US tariffs on Chinese goods, lowering them from 57% to 47%. He also indicated that all issues concerning rare earth minerals had been resolved. China reciprocated the positive sentiment, with President Xi echoing the potential for joint action that would benefit both countries and the global community. The Chinese leader emphasized their shared responsibility as major nations to work collaboratively for the betterment of their populations and the world. This diplomatic engagement also saw an agreement to establish direct military-to-military communication channels, aiming to prevent and reduce tensions arising from any potential conflicts. This crucial step towards de-escalation was confirmed after discussions between US Secretary of War Pete Hegseth and Chinese Defense Minister Admiral Dong Jun in Malaysia. Hegseth echoed Trump’s positive outlook, describing the US-China relationship as ‘never been better’ and highlighting the importance of mutual respect and positive relations for global stability and strength.

Congress leader Jairam Ramesh has criticized the Indian government’s stance on Russia’s military cooperation with Pakistan. Ramesh questioned the Modi government’s response to Russia supplying RD-93MA engines for the Chinese-made JF-17 Block-III fighter jets used by Pakistan. He highlighted the strategic implications, given that these engines enhance the aircraft’s capabilities and allow them to be equipped with PL-15 missiles, which Pakistan allegedly used against India during Operation Sindoor. Ramesh pointed out that, according to the Indian Air Force chief, the JF-17 was among the aircraft shot down by the Indian Air Force in May 2025. He also raised concerns about the failure of Indian foreign policy, alleging that the deal proceeded despite the direct intervention of the External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar. Ramesh questioned how Russia’s actions align with India’s ongoing defense purchases, such as the S-400 missile system and potential deals for Su-57 stealth fighters, suggesting a failure of the government’s diplomatic efforts and a prioritization of image over national interests. He further noted that this development reflects a weakening of India’s regional diplomacy and global influence, citing the fact that Pakistan’s army chief, Field Marshal Asim Munir, has received respect in the US and is now receiving strategic support from Russia. Ramesh called upon the Modi government to explain why India has failed to maintain its alliances despite its ‘personal diplomacy’ and why the government remains silent on Pakistan’s new military support.
