  • Hollywood filmmaker Michael Douglas to receive Satyajit Ray Lifetime Achievement award this year

    NEW DELHI: Renowned Hollywood actor and producer Michael Douglas will be honoured with the prestigious Satyajit Ray Lifetime Achievement Award this year at the 54th International Film Festival of India (IFFI) the held in Goa.

     The announcement was made by Union Minister of Information and Broadcasting Anurag Singh Thakur through a post on X, formerly known as Twitter. 

    This year’s film festival will be graced by the celebrated actor, accompanied by his spouse, eminent actress and philanthropist Catherine Zeta Jones and their son and actor, Dylan Douglas. 

    “I’m delighted to announce that Michael Douglas, the distinguished Hollywood Actor and Producer, will be honoured with the prestigious Satyajit Ray Excellence in Film Lifetime Award at the 54th International Film Festival Goa. His deep love for our country, India, is well known, and we look forward to welcome him, Catherine Zeta Jones and their son, to the most prominent Film Festival in South Asia to showcase our rich cinematic culture and unique traditions at #IFFI54!!     Indian Film producer and founder of Percept Ltd. and the Sunburn music festival Shailendra Singh, who is celebrating his 25 years in the Indian Film Industry will also be in attendance.

    The Satyajit Ray Lifetime Achievement Award, instituted in 1999, is presented to individuals whose exceptional contributions have significantly enriched and elevated the world of cinema. Douglas, a luminary in the film industry, has captivated audiences globally with his unparalleled talent and commitment to his craft, said the statement of the ministry bof information and broadcasting issued on Friday.

    Michael Douglas has enjoyed a remarkable career, earning two Academy Awards, five Golden Globe Awards, and an Emmy Award. His roles in cinematic masterpieces such as “Wall Street (1987)”, “Basic Instinct (1992)”, “Falling Down (1993)”, “The American President (1995)”, “Traffic (2000)” and “Behind the Candelabra (2013)” have left an indelible imprint on cinema history. He has also produced a number of critically acclaimed films, such as “One Flew Over the Cuckoo’s Nest (1975)”, “The China Syndrome (1979)”, and “The Game (1999)”. In 1998, he was appointed the UN Messenger of Peace for his commitment to disarmament issues, including nuclear non-proliferation and halting the illicit trade in small arms and light weapons. Notably, he was awarded the honorary Palm D’Or at the Cannes Film Festival earlier this year, a testament to his enduring influence on the global film fraternity.

    Catherine Zeta Jones, an accomplished actress in her own right, has been recognized for her outstanding contributions to cinema and her commitment to philanthropy. Her remarkable career includes unforgettable performances in films like “Traffic (200)”, “Chicago (2002)”, and “The Mask of Zorro (1998)”, which have earned her critical acclaim and numerous accolades. She is also the recipient of an Academy Award and a British Academy of Film and Television Arts (BAFTA) Award.

    In a noteworthy event earlier this year, Michael Douglas was honored at the India Pavilion in Marche Du Film, during the Cannes Film Festival, underscoring his global impact on the film industry.

    As part of the 54th IFFI, Michael Douglas and Catherine Zeta Jones will also be participating in a special In Conversation session hosted by the National Award-winning film producer, Shailendra Singh. The Satyajit Ray Lifetime Achievement Award has previously honored luminaries such as Bernardo Bertolucci (IFFI 30), Carlos Saura (IFFI 53), Martin Scorsese (IFFI 52), Dilip Kumar (IFFI 38), Krzysztof Zanussi (IFFI 43), and Wong Kar-wai (IFFI 45), among other major film personalities.   • Michael Douglas to receive honorary Palme d’Or at Cannes Film Festival

    CANNES: Veteran Hollywood star Michael Douglas will be felicitated with an honorary Palme d’Or at the 76th Cannes Film Festival.

    Douglas will be recognised for his brilliant career as well as his contribution to cinema, the festival organisers said in a statement.

    The festival will pay tribute to the 78-year-old actor during the opening ceremony on May 16.

    It’s an honour to return to the prestigious film gala and attend the opening ceremony, said Douglas, who has delivered hits such as “The China Syndrome”, “Wall Street”, “Fatal Attraction”, “Basic Instinct” and “Behind the Candelabra” in his career of over 50 years.

    “It is always a breath of fresh air to be at Cannes, which has long provided a wonderful platform for bold creators, artistic audacities and excellence in storytelling,” the actor said.

    “From my first time here in 1979 for ‘The China Syndrome’ to my most recent premiere for ‘Behind the Candelabra’ in 2013, the Festival has always reminded me that the magic of cinema is not just in what we see onscreen but in its ability to impact people all around the world,” he added.

    To complete the tribute to Douglas, a previously unreleased documentary, titled “Michael Douglas, The Prodigal Son”, will be shown on the festival site for two days, from May 14 to 16.

    The 2023 edition of the Cannes Film Festival will run from May 16 to 27.

    Hollywood star Michael Douglas will star as US founding father Benjamin Franklin in a new limited series. The yet-untitled series is based on the book A Great Improvisation: Franklin, France, and the Birth of America by Pulitzer Prize winner Stacy Schiff. Kirk Ellis, the writer behind John Adams series, will write the show for Apple and serve as an executive producer.

    Emmy-winning director Tim Van Patten will direct and executive produce. Douglas will executive produce in addition to starring. Richard Plepler will executive produce via EDEN Productions, which is currently under an overall deal at Apple. Tony Krantz of Flame Ventures and Mark Mostyn also executive produce, with Schiff co-executive producing. Apple Studios and ITV Studios will co-produce.

    The series will explore the story of one of the greatest gambles of Franklin’s career. At age 70, without any diplomatic training, Franklin convinced France – an absolute monarchy – to underwrite America’s experiment in democracy. By virtue of his fame, charisma, and ingenuity, Franklin outmanoeuvred British spies, French informers, and hostile colleagues, all while engineering the Franco-American alliance of 1778 and the final peace with England of l783.

    The eight-year French mission stands as Franklin’s most vital service to his country, without which America would not have won the Revolution. Douglas most recently starred in the Netflix series The Kominsky Method, which aired its third and final season on the streamer in 2021. His starring role in the series earned him a Golden Globe in 2019 and three consecutive Emmy nominations for best actor in a comedy series. Douglas is primarily known for his film roles.

    He won the Oscar for best actor for his iconic role in Wall Street in 1988, with Douglas reprising the role of Gordon Gekko in Wall Street 2: Money Never Sleeps in 2010.

  • Filming of Marvel’s Ant-Man sequel Quantumania begins

    The shooting of the Ant-Man film, titled Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantumania, has commenced on Monday at Pinewood Studios in Buckinghamshire, with the working title Dust Bunny. The news was announced by the film’s director Peyton Reed.

    The filmmaker, who directed Ant-Man (2015) and Ant-Man and the Wasp (2018) took to Twitter to share a picture from the film’s set and wrote, “It begins. Day One – Principal Photography.”

    The film will mark the return of primary cast members including Paul Rudd, Evangeline Lilly, Michael Douglas, and Michelle Pfeiffer to reprise their characters from the Marvel Cinematic Universe. The characters last appeared in the 2019 film, Avengers: Endgame.

    The film is currently slated to release on February 23, 2023.
