  • Sahabaz, Maxwell lead Royal Challengers Bangalore to beat Sunrisers Hyderabad by 6 runs

    By PTI
CHENNAI: Left-arm spinner Shahbaz Ahmed (3/7) dished out a match-winning performance after Glenn Maxwell’s half-century to help Royal Challengers Bangalore notch up a six-run win over Sunrisers Hyderabad in the Indian Premier League here on Wednesday.

Put in to bat, RCB managed 149 for eight on the back of Maxwell’s 41-ball 59 before Shahbaz changed the complexion of the match by dismissing Manish Pandey (38), Jonny Bairstow (12) and Abdul Samad (0) in one over, as SRH ended at 143 for nine in the stipulated 20 overs.

The victory propelled RCB to the top of the table.

Chasing a modest total, SRH lost opener Wriddhiman Saha (1) cheaply in the beginning of the third over.

However, skipper David Warner (54) and Pandey looked to make short work of the chase, galloping towards the target with the Sunrisers needing 73 off the last 10 overs.

The duo looked in ominous touch, smashing boundaries every over to keep the score board ticking until the 14the over when the Australian, who hit seven fours and a six, was dismissed off a Kyle Jamieson off-cutter.

RCB gained confidence after Warner’s dismissal, their bowlers limiting the boundaries.

With the pressure mounting, Bairstow, Pandey and Samad tried to target Shahbaz but mistimed their shots to return to the pavilion in the 17th over.

Vijay Shankar (3) and Jason Holder (4) too struggled.

Rashid Khan injected some hope in the SRH camp smashing 18 off nine balls before he was run out.

Earlier, SRH bowlers, led by West Indian all-rounder Jason Holder (3/30) and star spinner Rashid Khan (2/18), put up superlative show and picked up wickets at regular intervals.

For RCB, Maxwell was the top scorer, hitting five fours and three maximums with skipper Virat Kohli (33) Shahbaz Ahmed (14) and Kyle Jamieson (12) providing valuable contributions.

Put in to bat, RCB were off to a decent start with Kohli and opener Devdutt Padikkal (11) hitting a few boundaries.

However, Sunrisers didn’t have to wait long for their first breakthrough as a back of the length delivery in the third over by Bhuvneshwar Kumar (1/30) spelled the end of Padikkal, who had returned after recovering from COVID-19.

Shahbaz was the next to depart after playing a quick cameo, leaving RCB at 47 for two.

At the halfway mark, Maxwell raised the tempo as the big-hitting Australian smashed Shahbaz Nadeem (1/36) for two sixes and a four in the first three balls of the 11th over, with Kohli joining the party with a boundary.

The two stitched a 44-run partnership before Jason Holder got rid of the RCB skipper as wickets continued to fall at regular intervals.

With AB de Villiers (1) in the middle, SRH captain David Warner introduced spin once again, bringing on versatile leg-spinner Rashid, and the move immediately paid dividends.

The dangerous South African slapped the ball straight to Warner at covers with the slow nature of the Chepauk track coming to the fore once again.

The Afghan spinner struck once again, getting rid of Washinton Sundar (8).

With Dan Christian also gone, Maxwell smashed three fours and a maximum in the last three overs.

Former champions SRH lost their opening match to Kolkata Knight Riders while RCB beat Mumbai Indians in the tournament opener.

  • We did well again in batting: Finch

Australia captain Aaron Finch on Sunday said that after defeating India in their second ODI series, his team said that his team performed well in batting. Australia scored a mammoth 389 runs from Steven Smith (104) for his second consecutive storm century and openers David Warner (83), Aaron Finch (60), Marnus Labuschen (70) and Glenn Maxwell (63 not out) and India. This match and series was named after stopping for 338 runs. Finch said, “We performed well in batting. It is good whenever you score more than 300.

It is pleasant to win two matches in a row. Nothing can be said about David Warner’s fitness. We have to think about it. I do not think they will be available in the next match. But the way he started us is really amazing. However, the batsmen after that played their role well and strengthened the innings. “The way Warner played is unbelievable.” After this, Smith continued his brilliant form and scored a century in the second match in a row. Henriques bowled with easy strategy and changed his pace. As Virat Kohli said, we knew Hardik Pandya’s bowling blueprint but it is difficult to hit his ball during fast bowling.

  • Australia set target of 390 runs in front of India, bowling of Indian team remained breathless

Australia has set a target of 390 runs in front of India in the second one-day cricket match played at the Sydney Cricket Ground. Australia captain Aaron Finch won the toss for the second consecutive match and decided to bat.

Batting first, Australia scored 389 runs, losing 4 wickets in 50 overs, with the help of Steve Smith’s century, David Warner, Aaron Finch, Marnus Labushane and Glenn Maxwell.

Captain Australian Finch and David Warner gave a good start to the Australian team after winning the toss and came to bat first. Both batsmen scored 59 runs in the first powerplay. In the 11th over, David Warner completed the 23rd half-century of his ODI career. He scored a mastermind in just 39 balls with the help of 6 fours and 2 sixes. Both then added 117 runs in 20 overs.

Captain Aaron Finch batted strongly in the second consecutive innings and completed the half-century with the help of 5 fours and 1 six in 60 balls. However, on a personal score of 60 runs, he was caught by Mohammed Shami at the hands of Virat Kohli. After this, second success was given to India by Shreyas Iyer. He dismissed David Warner for a score of 83.

The third half-century of this innings was scored by Steve Smith for Australia. He completed 50 runs in 38 balls with the help of 5 fours and 1 six. In this match, he scored a century in 62 balls, but after scoring 104 runs in 64 balls, he was caught out by Mohammad Shami on the ball of Hardik Pandya. Marnus Labushane scored a brilliant knock of 70 off 61 balls and he was caught out by Mayank Agarwal off Jasprit Bumrah.

Glenn Maxwell played his second consecutive storming innings for the Australian team. He scored a half-century in just 25 balls and remained unbeaten after scoring 63 runs in 29 balls. In this, he hit 4 fours and 4 sixes.

The Indian team has landed without any change, while the host team has made a change. Moises Henriques has been included in the playing eleven for this match in Australia’s team in place of injured all-rounder Makzas Stoinis. Stoinis was injured during bowling in the previous match and could not complete the over.

  • Steve Smith, Aaron Finch centuries power Australia to 374/6

Australia put up an enthralling performance with the bat in the opening ODI of the three-match series on Friday as the hosts set India a mammoth target of 375 at the Sydney Cricket Ground.

Having opted to bat after winning the toss, Australia got off to a brilliant start with openers David Warner and skipper Aaron Finch scoring regular boundaries. The duo kept the scoreboard running and touched the 100-run mark in the 19th over. Mohammed Shami handed India the first breakthrough as he dismissed Warner (69), ending their 156-run partnership. But the joy was shortlived as Steve Smith came out to bat.

Smith and Finch proved too good for the Indian bowlers and took Australia past the 200-run mark in the 34th over. Smith started playing aggressively and completed his half-century off just 36 deliveries. Finch kept plugging the gaps and went on to score his 17th ODI century, putting the hosts in a dominating position.

Their 108-run stand was brought to an end in the 40th over by Jasprit Bumrah, who sent Aaron Finch (114) back to the pavilion. Marcus Stoinis was the next batsman but failed to leave a mark as he was caught behind off Yuzvendra Chahal as the hosts were reduced to 271/3.

Stoinis’ dismissal brought Glenn Maxwell to the wicket. Maxwell looked intent on starting in overdrive mode, taking the team past the 300-run mark in the 43rd over with Smith for company. Maxwell played a 45-run cameo before Shami ended his 19-ball stay at the crease in the 45th over. Maxwell was caught by Ravindra Jadeja at long-on.

  • Australia coach Justin Langer ahead of India ODIs

Australia head coach Justin Langer admitted they have a few selection headaches ahead of the three-match ODI series against India starting on November 27 at Sydney.

Steve Smith has returned to the ODI squad after he missed Australia’s last assignment against World champions England due to a concussion. Langer confirmed that Smith will straightaway find a place in the XI in place of the injured Mitchell Marsh in the first ODI against Virat Kohli’s men at SCG on Friday.

“We’ll probably lean that way (picking Smith for Marsh) but we did learn and we’ve talked about in our foundation for one-day cricket going forward, we really like that extra bowling option,” Langer said as quoted by Cricket.com.au.

The former Australia opener, however, added that they would like to have that extra cushion of a bowler which they had in the presence of Marsh, Glenn Maxwell and Marcus Stoinis, which gives them some selection headaches.

“In England, we had Mitch Marsh, Marcus Stoinis and Glenn Maxwell able to get us at least 10 overs. So we like that combination, the extra allrounder. Obviously Steve will come straight back in.

  • Maxwell upset with Virender Sehwag’s comments, ‘he is media for such statements’

Former India opener Virender Sehwag is known to not hold back on his opinions and was pretty harsh on Australia’s Glenn Maxwell while analysing his performance for Kings XI Punjab in IPL 2020. Maxwell has brushed aside the criticism by saying, ‘Sehwag is in media for such comments’. According to Maxwell, ‘he is upset but will take it with a grain of salt and move on’

“It’s ok. Viru is pretty outspoken with his dislike of me, and that’s fine. He’s allowed to say whatever he likes,” Maxwell was quoted as saying by The West Australian. “He’s in the media for such statements, so that’s fine. I deal with that and move on, and take it with a grain of salt with Sehwag.”

Sehwag went to the extent of labelling the Australian a “10-crore cheerleader” who, according to him, was on a “highly-paid vacation” in the UAE.
