  • ‘Wakanda Forever’ notches up USD 84 million on opening day in North America

    By IANS

LOS ANGELES: In a post-pandemic world, superhero movies seem to be the sole cinematic pieces that can pull the audience to theatres. Marvel’s ‘Black Panther: Wakanda Forever’ pretty much reaffirms this as it’s reigning over the North American box office.

The superhero sequel earned USD 84 million from 4,396 locations on its opening day, reports Variety. Those figures includes USD 28 million in Thursday previews, which marked the 15th-highest preview gross in history and bested the first ‘Black Panther’ movie’s figure by USD 3 million.

It is also the second biggest opening day of the year, behind the USD 90.4 million earned by fellow Marvel Cinematic Universe entry ‘Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness’.

According to Variety, estimates heading into the weekend suggested ‘Wakanda Forever’ could net a gross between USD 185 million and USD 200 million in its opening, though some competitors are now projecting that the film will fall shy of that range.

‘Doctor Strange 2’ has remained the biggest opening weekend of the year since it debuted with USD 187 million in May. Whether the ‘Black Panther’ sequel can surpass it by Monday, Marvel is once again in competition with itself for box office superlatives.

Variety further states that the arrival of the ‘Black Panther’ sequel represents a box office surge for a theatrical landscape that has been largely bereft of high-profile releases since the summer.

To put things in perspective, ‘Wakanda Forever’ will be the first movie since July’s ‘Thor: Love and Thunder’ to open above USD 100 million.

Even further, although the Warner Bros. release ‘Black Adam’ has drawn a substantial audience in recent weeks, ‘Wakanda Forever’ looks to outgross the DC entry within its first three days of release. That’s how big a splash the film is making.

  • ‘Wakanda Forever will honour Chadwick Boseman’s legacy but also move forward’

    Express News Service

Marvel producer Nate Moore looks back at the passing of Chadwick Boseman as a “tragic loss for me, both professionally and personally”. Chadwick, globally-acclaimed star of films like 42 and Get on Up, as well as King T’Challa in the MCU, died of colon cancer two years ago. His untimely demise put a spanner in the works of a Black Panther sequel. Nate, for instance, knew for certain they couldn’t recast T’Challa. He also knew that a film that does not emotionally acknowledge and honour Chadwick’s legacy would gravely shortchange millions of grieving fans.

“Figuring out how to make a film that both honours him but also moves forward and shows people that there’s possibility beyond the tragedy was something we never had to face as a company,” Nate says in an interview with Cinema Express. The first step – as with dealing with any tragedy – was putting the old team together. Director Ryan Coogler returned, as did Letitia Wright (Shuri), Lupita Nyong’o (Nakia), Danai Gurira (Okoye), Winston Duke (M’Baku), Martin Freeman and others. They were going back to Wakanda, a bereft, vulnerable, T’Challa-less Wakanda, beset by hostilities and an advancing subaqueous enemy in the form of Namor (Tenoch Heurta).

“We were all processing this feeling of grief and loss,” adds Ryan, seated among his cast members in LA. We meet them over Zoom, and the show of strength—steered, in case it needs pointing out, by the women of Wakanda, one of the largest female-led superhero ensembles ever—is awe-inspiring. “It’s great when you don’t have to do it alone, you know? We were able to build that sense of community and also welcome new members, like Namor and his underwater kingdom of the Talokanil.”

Warrior womenTalking of new members, Michaela Coel is in the cast. The actor and creator of the universally celebrated British shows Chewing Gum and I May Destroy You appears in Black Panther: Wakanda Forever as Aneka, a brand-new character described in the comic books as a combat instructor for the Dora Milaje, Wakanda’s elite all-female special force. Aneka and Ayo (played by Florence Kasumba) share a romantic track in the film.

“Michaela Coel was an unexpected addition because we felt there’s no way she would want to be in this movie,” laughs Nate. “But she loved the world of Wakanda and her spirit is just infectious. So we found a way to integrate her into the film.”

Danai Gurira, who plays Okoye, fierce warrior and general of the Dora Milaje, talks enthusiastically about Wakanda’s action design. After four movies—Okoye also appeared in Avengers: Infinity War and Avengers: Endgame—the American-Zimbabwean actor has gotten scarily efficient with her battle spear. She tells Cinema Express, “I’m still some way from mastering it but there are aspects to it that do come more naturally now. I love the weapon. It links our characters to their African heritage and their foremothers. I learned new things about it on Wakanda Forever. And yeah, it does help slice away spider webs at home!”

The Panther-in-waiting Letitia Wright’s role as T’Challa’s tech-savvy sister was expanded to bolster the sequel. As princess Shuri, she is everyone’s guess as the next Black Panther, donning a new suit and clawing down as the protector of Wakanda. But not before she’s had a chance to work through the anger and grief of her brother’s death. “When we meet Shuri in the first film, she is this ray of sunshine,” Letitia says. “She’s so clothed and protected in royalty and love. Her family encouraged her to be a genius and be wonderfully made. So, we follow from that. What does that look like, when your heart is broken?”

Nate, catching the maudlin drift of these interviews, assures the new film is not all doom and gloom. We can tell — not least from the soundtrack (Rihanna, Stormzy, DBN Gogo), snatches of score (Oscar-winner Ludwig Göransson) and those epically cool shots of Ironheart (Dominique Throne).“What these Wakandans are experiencing is not just grief,” Nate says. “It’s also sometimes joy, sometimes humour. It’s all those complex emotions that emerge in the wake of a profound loss.”

    By ANI

LONDON: American actor and comedian Aubrey Plaza, who is currently starring in ‘The White Lotus’ season 2, has been cast for a role in ‘Agatha: Coven of Chaos’, Marvel’s upcoming ‘WandaVision’ spinoff series for Disney+.

According to Deadline, she will be seen starring in the show opposite Kathryn Hahn and Joe Locke. Though details about Plaza’s role are being kept under wraps, she is believed to be playing a villain.

Meanwhile, Hahn is reprising her role as ‘WandaVision’s antagonist Agatha in the series. Emma Caulfield Ford will also reprise the role of Dottie.

Hahn’s Agatha Harkness appeared in Disney+’s ‘WandaVision’, from series creator Jac Schaeffer. The show centred on Wanda (Elizabeth Olsen) and Vision (Paul Bettany), two superpowered beings living their ideal suburban lives in the town of Westview, NJ, who begin to suspect that everything is not as it seems, reported Deadline.

Agatha, who won viewers over with her ‘Agatha All Along’ number, is a witch from Salem and a fan-favourite breakout character.

Schaeffer is among the names working behind the scenes on the project, and the writer is also developing a Vision-centric series, ‘Vision Quest’, to star Paul Bettany.

Plaza broke out on NBC’s ‘Parks and Rec’ and is currently on TV screens with season two of HBO’s ‘The White Lotus’. She has Francis Ford Coppola’s ‘Megalopolis’ coming up and has previously played in the world of comic books with FX’s ‘Legion’, as per The Hollywood Reporter.

  • James Cameron takes on Marvel, DC characters: They all act like they’re in college

    By PTI

NEW YORK: Veteran filmmaker James Cameron has criticised the aspect of character development in superhero films from Marvel and DC Studios, adding “that’s not the way to make movies”.

The director said the maturity that is lacking in the characters from these tentpole franchises is depicted in his upcoming sci-fi adventure movie “Avatar: The Way of Water” through its protagonists Jake Sully (Sam Worthington) and Neytiri (Zoe Saldana).

“The Way of Water”, the sequel to the 2009 film “Avatar”, will see Jake and Neytiri go to great lengths to keep their family safe.

“Zoe and Sam now play parents, 15 years later. In the first movie, Sam’s character leaps off his flying creature and essentially changes the course of history as a result of this crazy, almost suicidal leap of faith.”

“And Zoe’s character leaps off a limb and assumes there’s going to be some nice big leaves down there that can cushion her fall. But when you’re a parent, you don’t think that way. So for me, as a parent of five kids, I’m saying, “What happens when those characters mature and realize that they have a responsibility outside their own survival?’” Cameron told The New York Times newspaper.

Citing the example of Marvel and DC, the celebrated director said the characters in the spectacle films hailing from these stables “don’t experience” relationships in the real sense.

“When I look at these big, spectacular films, I’m looking at you, Marvel and DC, it doesn’t matter how old the characters are, they all act like they’re in college. They have relationships, but they really don’t. They never hang up their spurs because of their kids. 0The things that really ground us and give us power, love, and a purpose? Those characters don’t experience it, and I think that’s not the way to make movies,” he continued.

Interestingly, Saldana is also part of the Marvel Cinematic Universe, under which she plays Gamora in “Guardians of the Galaxy” franchise.

The actor will reprise her role in the third part of “Guardians” slated for a summer 2023 release.

In the past, filmmakers outside the genre like Martin Scorsese and Francis Ford Coppola have criticised superhero films terming them “theme parks” and “despicable”, respectively.

  • ‘Oh really? Wow’: Elizabeth Olsen on Hugh Jackman’s return, says she wants to team up with X-Men

    By ANI

WASHINGTON: Hollywood actor Elizabeth Olsen, who plays the role of Scarlet Witch in the MCU, has shared her thoughts on Hugh Jackman’s return as Wolverine.

Olsen got the news about Jackman’s return at Variety’s Power of Women, where she expressed shock over the revelation. “Oh really?” Olsen asked when she heard the news. “Wow!”

Olsen wants Scarlet Witch to team up with more X-Men characters on the big screen now that Jackman is returning as Wolverine. Olsen’s character is a mutant in the comic books and the daughter of Magneto, played by both Ian McKellen and Michael Fassbender on the big screen.

“I guess Wolverine is X-Men. It would be cool to work with a lot of those people from the X-Men franchise. I guess Fassbender is my dad in some world?” Olsen said when asked about which characters she hopes to team up with in the future of the MCU.

Scarlet Witch was last shown in ‘Doctor Stranger in the Multiverse of Madness’ where the character took a villainous turn and her fate was left ambiguous by the end after she sacrificed herself to destroy the Darkhold in a moment of redemption.

Marvel Studios’ Kevin Feige has confirmed to Variety that the character will be back in future. “There really is so much more to explore. We still haven’t touched on many of her core storylines from the comics,” Feige said.

Meanwhile, Ryan Reynolds, on Tuesday, took to social media and shared a video announcing Jackman’s return as Wolverine. “Hey, Hugh, you want to play Wolverine one more time?” Reynolds asked as Jackman walks by in the background.

The last time X-Men fans saw Jackman as Wolverine was in 2016’s R-rated ‘Logan’, directed by James Mangold. Wolverine famously died at the end of the film, and Jackman has stated repeatedly that the film was his swan song in the role. It is not yet known how he will appear in ‘Deadpool 3’, which will be in theatres on September 6, 2024.
