The reference was made because apart from Thor, no other superhero can pick up the Mjolnir. Thor’s Mjolnir is the hammer of the thunder god Thor in Norse mythology, used both as a devastating weapon and as a divine instrument to provide blessings.

  • ‘Shang-Chi’ director Destin Daniel Cretton to helm ‘Avengers: The Kang Dynasty’

    By IANS

LOS ANGELES: ‘Shang-Chi: The Legend of the Ten Rings’ director Destin Daniel Cretton will be seen helming ‘Avengers: The Kang Dynasty’, a representative for Marvel Studios confirmed.

Marvel Studios chief Kevin Feige announced ‘The Kang Dynasty’ during the company’s wide-ranging presentation at San Diego Comic-Con, as part one of the two-part conclusion to the Multiverse Saga -similar to how 2018’s ‘Avengers: Infinity War’ and 2019’s ‘Avengers: Endgame’ concluded the Infinity Saga, reports Variety.

Unlike those films, which were filmed and directed back-to-back by MCU veterans Anthony and Joe Russo, Cretton will only be directing ‘The Kang Dynasty’, which is set to debut on May 2, 2025.

The follow-up, ‘Avengers: Secret Wars’, is due to open just six months later, on November 7, 2025. No director has been announced for that film.

While there have been no screenwriter or casting announcements for ‘The Kang Dynasty’ either, the title makes clear that Jonathan Majors’ ‘Kang the Conqueror’ who will be first introduced in 2023’s ‘Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantumania’, will play a central role in the film.

As his name suggests, Kang did indeed successfully conquer Earth in a Marvel comics run in the early 2000s, until the Avengers defeated him.

‘Shang-Chi’ was the first Marvel Studios film to get an exclusive theatrical release following the Covid pandemic shutdown, earning $432 million worldwide amid rolling shutdowns during the spread of the delta variant.

Prior to that film, Cretton was best known as the director of the deeply felt 2013 indie drama ‘Short Term 12’, which helped to launch the career of its star Brie Larson all the way to playing Captain Marvel in the MCU.

Larson has since appeared in all of Cretton’s movies, starring in the 2017 biographical drama ‘The Glass Castle’, and co-starring with Michael B. Jordan, also an MCU veteran, in Warner Bros.’ 2019 historical drama ‘Just Mercy’.

  • ‘Black Panther 2’ teaser is a sombre, lyrical tribute to Chadwick Boseman

    By PTI

LOS ANGELES: Marvel Studios has unveiled the official teaser of its much anticipated superhero film “Black Panther: Wakanda Forever”, which is a heartfelt homage to the late franchise lead Chadwick Boseman.

The makers released the footage on Saturday evening at the San Diego Comic-Con, where the team was led by writer-director Ryan Coogler, who helmed the first “Black Panther”.

Set to a spiritualistic cover version of Bob Marley’s “No Woman No Cry” and “Alright” by Kendrick Lamar, the video depicts the fictitious African nation of Wakanda in mourning, an apparent reference to the death of King T’Challa/ Black Panther, originally played by Boseman. The actor died in August 2020 after a private, four-year battle with colon cancer.

According to Variety, Coogler addressed Boseman’s demise and said “it’s going to be hard to follow that up, but we’ll try.”

“It’s been five years since I was here. I sat there and we premiered the first footage from ‘Black Panther 1,’ and sitting next to me was our T’Challa, the late great Chadwick Boseman.”

The filmmaker said he could feel the late star’s presence in the room. “I promise you, I can feel his hand on me right now,” he added.

Letitia Wright, who is said to be taking on the mantle of the Black Panther as Shuri, said she is looking forward to the film. “It’s a blessing. We’ve all grown so much as a family, and it feels great to see you guys and honour big bro at the same time,” she added.

The lines “Good friends we have and good friends we’ve lost” by Marley is a reiteration that Boseman will not appear on the screen as the superhero after the studio confirmed in 2021 that they will not use computer-generated imagery to include him in the new film.

“I am Queen of the most powerful nation in the world, and my entire family is gone,” cries Angela Bassett’s Ramonda, who is seen sitting on the throne earlier in the teaser.

There is also a sequence of an underwater birth with actors Lupita Nyong’o, Letitia Wright, Danai Gurira, Florence Kasumba and Winston Duke reprising their roles.

The clip also takes the audience to some never-before-seen places in Wakanda, introduces them to new characters Riri Williams aka Ironheart (Dominique Thorne) and Namor, the Submariner (Tenoch Huerta), shares a glimpse into an imminent battle, and teases the new Black Panther who has their claws out.

“It’s a labour of love, and I have so much gratitude to be a part of it and be able to share it with you,” Duke, who plays M’Baku, said of the sequel.

Series newcomers such as Michaela Coel, Thorne, Alex Nivilani, Mabel Cadena and Huerta were also part of the panel.

Huerta said he was excited to be part of the film’s cast “I want to say something really fast about inclusion. I come from the hood and, thanks to inclusion, I’m here. I wouldn’t be here without inclusion. A lot of kids in the hood are here looking at us dreaming to be here. And they’re going to make it! They’re going to make it!” he added.

Coel lauded the musical performance that opened the panel. “It feels really special seeing the drummers and dancers. It reminded me what an honour it was to support this cast,” she said. “Black Panther: Wakanda Forever” is slated to be released in the US on November 11.

The trailer is strung together with a lyrical motif of Bob Marley’s ageless ‘No woman, no cry’, moving between riveting images of Wakanda’s aquatic environments, futuristic technology and what appears to be a funeral with crowds of Wakandans dressed in white.
“I am Queen of the most powerful nation in the world, and my entire family is gone,” Angela Bassett’s Ramonda declares, according to ‘Variety’.
A question lingers over the trailer: who will take on the mantle of the Black Panther? A figure is seen in the hero’s suit at the end of the trailer, though it isn’t clarified who is in the costume.

Writer-director Ryan Coogler, who helmed the first ‘Black Panther’, took the stage to discuss the sequel, reflecting on the death of the series’ former star, Chadwick Boseman, who played the lead character, T’Challa. Boseman died in August 2020 after a private, four-year battle with colon cancer.
This trailer included a nod to Boseman. His image, as ‘The Direct’ notes, came on a piece of art in the streets of Wakanda, helping the people remember their fallen king.

Coogler also introduced ‘Black Panther’ stars Lupita Nyong’o, Letitia Wright, Danai Gurira, Florence Kasumba and Winston Duke on the Comic-Con stage, and then declared: “It’s a labor of love, and I have so much gratitude to be a part of it and be able to share it with you.”

LOS ANGELES: Oscar winner Daniel Kaluuya will be missing in action from Marvel Studios’ upcoming superhero tentpole “Black Panther: Wakanda Forever”.

Slated to be released on November 11, “Wakanda Forever” is the much-anticipated sequel of the 2018 blockbuster “Black Panther” directed by Ryan Coogler.

Kaluuya told Rotten Tomatoes that he had to exit the film due to scheduling conflicts with Jordan Peele’s movie “Nope”, which is scheduled for a July 22 release.

The actor was nominated for the best leading actor Oscar for his role in Peele’s superhit horror film “Get Out” (2017).

In “Black Panther”, Kaluuya played W’Kabi, the best friend to T’Challa/Black Panther (the late Chadwick Boseman) and the head of security for the Border Tribe of the fictional African nation Wakanda. Officially announced by the studio in mid-2019, “Black Panther 2” has had a tumultuous journey after lead star Boseman died of colon cancer in August 2020.

Following Boseman’s demise, Marvel decided not to recast the role of T’Challa. The sequel will explore other characters from the world of “Black Panther”, while also honouring Boseman’s legacy.

The COVID-19 pandemic added to the makers’ woes as several stars tested positive for the virus on set. In 2021, Wright suffered an injury while filming a stunt sequence, which further delayed production.
